View Full Version : Dad's '85 Toyota

I can get some pics, but dad is selling off one of the fleet. It's an '85 Toyota 22R, 2wd, extended cab, auto. Pump the gas pedal once, and away you go. (It's carbed) Dad has had it about a year, bought it off a pilot out at SWA. It probably gets about 23-ish mpg. It's in good shape body-wise with a nice steel truck box and bedliner. Interior is damn near perfect minus the grant steering wheel. Tires/brakes/alignment/etc. all in good shape. AC works fine, burns a little oil but no biggie. I'll have to check mileage, 150-ish? The extended cab 'yotas are hard to find, and people want a lot for them now that gas is so high. If anyone is interested let me know, he wants to sell it pretty soon. He is asking $2k, but I know the TAMOR price would be less. If you have any questions let me know. He's only selling it because he rebuilt the suspension and put new seats in the grey 'yota and now thinks it's a new car or something. I told him to sell off both of them and buy a 'vette or something his co-workers won't laugh at. I guess that's not his style...

Dad said he'd take $1850, and also the inspection and registration are out. There isn't any reason it wouldn't pass, he just has his tinfoil hat about someone driving it for a year on his registration/inspection.

Does the extra cab let the seat go back enough. I'm 6'3".

Body looks pretty straight, I will be in Waxahachie all next week again. Maybe I can come look at it?

The auto isn't my favorite either, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. You can talk on your cell phone, drink a beer, and flip off ****ty drivers and not have to worry about shifting!

The new commuter. The F150 is killing me on gas. So far, all I think it needs is rear brakes. (probably just one wheel cylinder) I might change the plugs and change the oil.

I got a free tour of the Brune family homestead/shop too:gigem:

Nice. I gotta say, it looks better in person. The fender flares aren't as flared it seems.

What's the Ford getting? 18? They aren't payin gas?

Nice to see it "stayin in the family"

18? It averages 13-14 with maybe 75% highway driving. It has almost 80k on it and might need a tune up soon, but I think a tune up on that truck only involves changing spark plugs. They give me a per diem, but its is getting to the point that I am not making anything of that anymore.

It has an OD button on the shifter.

Jimmy, do you know what the 'lock" pull thing is for next to the e-brake?

I pour concrete in the morning so there willbe 40-50 Mexicans checking it out. I'm not selling though:gigem:

Damn, my old man has gotten 18 in his on the highway (04 or 05 with 4x4 auto 5.4 3.55) and had mileage like you have towing.

Do you have the 3 valve? im not sure when that started or how much diff it makes.

Also, what about the bigger tires and edge?

My truck has been getting +/- 14 lately, though i do drive relatively slow. (speed limit give or take)

I think that "lock" lever is for locking the choke in the winter, but I'm not 100% on that. I'll ask Dad tomorrow if he knows what that was. It obviously wasn't too important. heh.

That seems pretty high, maybe if it was a 4.6. My window sticker even says 14 city 17 hwy, and that is usually like only if driving 55. It has bigger tires, and stays in tow mode because Edge says that gets better mileage....I'm going to switch back to stock mode and see if it gets any better.

So got it home. I am 100% sure that when I strapped the back of the truck to the trailer in the Brune's driveway, there was a spare tire there. I touched it and it was loose so of couse, mental note, I'll fix it when I get it home. Trailered it to Waxa., unloaded it and am 75% that there was still a spare tire there. Loaded it up today to bring back to CS, no spare tire. Either someone really wanted a used 14" tire, or it scared the **** out of someone behind me :gigem:

It has been running great, but I wanted to do my usual tune-up stuff. I replaced the plugs with NGKs and also changed the cap/rotor/wires/pcv/air filter. The old plugs were Bosch Platinums +2s that looked a little nasty. Runs even better now. I am driving it back up tomorrow, so I'll check the MPG.

Also junked the mudflaps and added a 2 5/16" ball:gigem: you know, just in case I need to haul the Bronco around.:D

my tundra gets 18 in houston traffic and like 18-21 on the highway, when i first got it it was 21 and 23.

now junk those ngks and give'r some autolites (just change them with your oil) Valves to 7/11. Hope that 2 5/16 ball is mounted in the middle of the bed

I quizzed dad about the spare tire and he couldn't remember if there was one there to start or not. He said he thought you guys would have noticed the lack of one while strapping it down, so more than likely it was there on the beginning of your journey. Even if it was really loose you would think it would swing around, hard telling. If someone were to steal it they would need the thing that cranks it down though unless it was that loose. He also said that the pilot he bought it from spent ten minutes telling him how he maintained it and how he should do this and that and was really anal. Couldn't imagine a guy like that not having a spare. Sorry about that, I checked to see if we had an extra laying around, no dice.

Not yet...not supposed to buy gas today right? :flipoff2:... Your dad said he thought it had an 11 gallon tank, but I think it might be bigger. I am going to fill it up to come back tomorrow. I hope it is 11 with what the fuel gauge is reading:confused2

I drove it up here from CS this morning. It really hums on the hwy. I realized that I use cruise control alot more than I thought. I miss that.

As for the 'lock' lever...the cable ran through the firewall, then was just drapped off to the side like it had been cut. Definetely not OE, maybe it was for the choke, or maybe some attempt at cruise control. I just took it off.

It is still running great. I have put almost 1000 on it since I bought it.

I had Cardoc recharge the a/c and it is much better.

It has had a nice little knock first thing in the morning that goes away after a little bit of driving. I swapped to an oil filter that has that drainback valve thing in it and I will see if that helps any. I was told it should help.

If anyone has a spare 14" tire/5lug toyota rim, let me know :gigem:
