View Full Version : My 6.0 is Really Slow!!! (GM)

Ok, I always heard that the 6.0 LS motor was sucky in the burban. I have to agree. It only gets a mile better MPG than my old 454. My 454 would smoke this truck from a stand still and on the highway. The 454 had way more power for passing/ cruising grades. Everything else on this (6.0) truck is better than the old (454) except for the motor. The 6.0 has significantly more HP. I think the 6.0 is 325 HP/ 370 ft-lb. My 454 made 290 HP and had 410 ft-lb. I guess that torque made all the difference.

So....
I want to hop it up. I figure nobody has done any tow mods to a gas truck on here lately.
I was thinking of doing a full or cat back exhaust....I do not want Jerry Goss style nascar dump canadianess. I want quiet w/ a barely noticeble tone.

Intake? Full replacement? Worth the money?

Cam? Are they easy? Can you just pull the front cover and spin the cam? Will the lifters stay up like they are suppose to or is there a chance I will have to pull the intake b/c it doesn't work like it is suppose too?

Fred, Ryan: Who is that guy in Oklahoma that tunes? Is it worth the bucks? Could I skip all of the above and just do that? Or should I do intake/exhaust and then reprogram?

I'm looking to get the torque numbers up so this thing has more balls and doesn't bog on long grades or it would be nice that I could actually increase my speed w/o the converter unlocking everytime.

The K&N kit made a really noticeable difference with my old truck, same story on the Tahoe.

Check into programmers. They give a little more power even on cheap gas and usually have some options for the transmission.

The superchips tuner my dad had made alot of difference. Much more HP and MPG than the hypertech that he had.

or call these guys and see if they need a test vehicle to use to build a truck kit

Really, just throw a k&n intake setup on it, put an exhaust on it if you can handle the drone, and maybe get a programmer for it. Other than that, leave it alone. It's too high of mileage to just go throwing a cam in it anyway.

i agree i am not impressed with the power of my 6.0 2500 hd but since it i a company truck i am surely not gonna sup it up. The newer models that come with the 5 sp auto are getting about 2-3 mpg more that my 02 with the 4spd auto and 4.10's. They also seem to have more pep as well.

according to some forums I read the 6.0 is really loud w/ an exhaust. I guy posted an email he got from a Magnaflow tech and he said flat out they really don't know why it is so much louder than other LS based motrs and if he decides on an exhaust be prepared for some serious resonance inside the vehicle. I think I will do an intake and see what that does and then go w/ a chip. I have seen afew on C's List. Any reason not to buy one of those off of their.

Fred, I know it is a heavy ***** but the old beast had a lot more pick up off the line and wasn't nearly as good as motor. This thing lacks the power to cut people off...which I hate!

The suburban drones pretty good with the 3" magnaflow. It's nice for long trips, you get in the back and the drone just lulls you to sleep like a little baby, might be nice for you, actually having a baby and all.

I can attest to this personally, I did some serious sleeping (snoring) on the way back from Mizzou.

I think you mean 4" exhaust. Yeah, for some reason 8.1L isn't that quiet.

I drove a suburban with a 5.3 and that thing screamed! Peeled out from a stop and was more than fast enough for me. I guess the 5.3 winds up quicker than the 6.0?

Fredo
06-25-2008, 02:40 PM
My 5.3 runs ok in my tahoe...nothing to write home about at all. Wide open throttle and part throttle leave a bit to be desired in my tastes. But then again, I think everything I drive could use more power. I Would definitely love to put a supercharger on mine, but the "miracle transmission" would probably run out of magic dust if that were to happen.

Fredo
06-25-2008, 03:21 PM
I got to thinking about this after I posted a few minutes ago. This would pretty much be my breakdown of how to get the most out of your 6.0L without hurting mileage substantially. This is what I would do to my 5.3 anyway...same thing I would do to grayson's burb.

K&N Filtercharger
Exhaust, probably Magnaflow because for the money, its a pretty good system

fred, how did that electric fan swap work out? did you ever do a tech writeup on it?

Fredo
06-25-2008, 03:59 PM
I've never done it. I've thought about it, but everytime I see a set of the 05 and up fans come up for sale for a decent price, they sell before I get to them. From what I can tell, the fans are a direct bolt on if your truck comes with the 34" wide radiator, and nelson makes a factory style wiring harness to tie them in with. From there it's a matter of getting the fan controls enabled in the computer which on 03-up isn't a big deal. On 02's I don't think it is either, but I haven't verified that yet. Seems like a pretty painless process other than the cash to do it.

this is the part im curious about

Fredo
06-25-2008, 04:11 PM
Well, if it's like the OBDI or OBDII LT1 ecm's, it's a matter of turning the controls on or off in the programming and setting the temperatures. Knowing GM, it's probably still this way. I don't know, I've never messed with any of the LS motor ecms. Flem might know, but I could probably find out from a couple people if I was really serious about doing it. I guess I need to look into it again because I don't really see anything but positives to putting the factory fans on.

Yes, you yank the mechanical....otherwise, what would the point be of putting electric fans on? It's not like these motors have cooling issues.

Welcome back Kevin.

welcome to my world, say hello to the newbie webmaster....

grayson, i have no idea what setup fred's talking about but i would imagine it eliminates the mechanical fan. I did a dual electric fan setup/mechanical fan delete on my F150 and it rid the motor of a TON of low end drag.

I was thinking the electrics kept the mech one from clutching up. Kinda just freewheeled.
Maybe I should hook up an air operated clutch fan. That would be sweet!

My little brother did the flexalite or somethin electric fan setup on his F150. Said its good stuff. Expensive if you bought it new though. He got it off craigslist from a guy that put the factory one back on for tradein.
