No I don't mean gambling or alcoholism - though either of those might be fun too.

I need a cheapo vice for my workbench before this weekend as it will be necessary for doing my CTM rebuild. Anybody got one? Do pawn shops have this king of thing? Harbor Freight?

I think the sears vise wasn't much more than the harbor freight vise. Get the biggest or the most expensive

Krebs picked a bad ass one up for $.35/lb at Bryan Iron & Metal. Not sure I'd buy a new chinese vise...I've broken a few. Watch CL and get a big old one. I have a big one and a smaller (still old) one that I made a receiver hitch mount for, it's come in handy a few times.

goto lowe's they have a 3 sizes, the largest of which is nice.

I pilfered my dad's old one, ala hummerboy.

I'd rather get an old one, both for cheapness and because "they don't build 'em like they used to" definitely applies here.

Bryan Iron & Metal is a good idea. I really don't want to go dig around in that place though. Think they would know if they have one so I could call?

wtf, its a giant hunk of steel. I highly doubt you can break it with your limp wrist and picture frame making hammer:flipoff2:

I got the bad dude one from lowe's
the one that rotates on like 12 axes... but it was like $70... worth every dollar though

I dare you to call Bryan Iron & Metal and ask them if they think there might be a nice big vise out in the piles somewhere :D

How are you guys secruing them? I have a VERY ****ty vice mounted to my wooden work bench. It is on a corner directly above a 4x4 post, but the mounting holes only hit the post on two sides, the other secure just to the plywood top. It wil move the table, which is secured to the wall, when I really get on it. I am thinking I need to rob a 6x6 beam from the jobsite.

big fookin washers on a 1" thick work bench. I think for you an extra 2x4 under the plywood should be enough if it spans the short length of the table.

yeah mine is through 5/8 plywood and 5/8 mdf and it is more than secure. I made sure and put lock washers on the backside to keep them from loosening and wallowing out the holes.

I thought i was going to have to put a 2x6 on the backside but this has worked fine so far.

Yeah, that vice should have been thrown back. I tried all sorts of crap to free the two halves. i tried penetrating oil for for weeks, I submerged it in old car oil for a couple of months, I even tried the hi-lift. I finally got angry and brought it up to work where the giant press is.

I strapped one side to the base and one side the the cylinder. I then got on the side of the press so the I beam would block whatever happened. I slowly retracted the ram and it started to slide apart. At the very end it took some more pulling and then came apart and hit the side of the building. I'm glad I was on the side of the press.

hey if you would have held onto it a couple months you probably could have sold it back to them for more than $.35/lb!

I have a half ass workbench to begin with and after seeing how hard Jimmy had to bang on the CTMs last time, I am beginning to rethink this. I may go ahead and buy a light or medium vice and then secure it with a 2x4 under, but I am betting any hard cranking would move the whole bench. Anyone have a hitch or bed mounted one for Saturday (http://tamor.org/forums/showthread.php)?

I have a loose one that doesn't swivel. It could be mounted to a hitch. I would prefer to bolt it so I can put it on a bench in the future.

If you buy one, make sure it's big enough to fit someone's noggin in there, as you never know when that feature may come in handy. ;)

I'd trade out one of those grinding wheels with a wire brush, good for taking off rust...and skin. :gigem:

Could I bring it over here or is it a pain to move? If not, perhaps I could come by and do this Thursday or Friday?

It did come with instructions and though it looks like a pain, I think I can pull it off. IT does say a press makes it easier.

A press can also fawk the ears up on yokes very easily. I prefer the hammer method for this reason.

I mentions that in the manual. Doug, would you be willing to come give me a hand Saturday?

I've got 2 finals on monday, else I'd come and supervise. It's a fairly straight forward process.

I likes to use a vice and squeeze the caps in, then finish off with a tap tap taparoo from the hammer.

The press is heavy and large so it'd probably be easier to do here. I will be working tomm and friday but Clarke will probably be here.

Just take your time with the press and it will be a lot easier. Does that joint have bushings or needle bearings?

Doug Krebs

yes, you will just slowly fawk it up instead quickly!

You can also do it the slim 4x4 vice method. Tighten one side and whack the crap out of the other! It works better than you think!

I always end up forgetting to add extra grease in the caps and one of the damn needle bearings will fall out of place and I have to pull it back apart a couple of times.

it does suck when that happens, but ctms have bronze bushing sleeves instead of needle bearings.
