Build rockergaurds, like Creighton's (Blankenship's too), out of some box tubing. I have the dimensions written down someplace. (from Bryan Sheet Metal or something?) I won't have enough money for a step yet, so I will just drill and bolt them up for now.

i think they used angle iron, not box, but maybe that just how my brother did it

I'm not exactly sure on the proper name or terminology of the Box (or angle iron), but it gets the idea across.

Will a welder be needed for this? Perhaps one can be brought from Dexter? I have 220v nearby, but the extension cord from Krebs that we used last time would be handy.

no just a chop saw, angle grinder, and drill should be all the tools needed

What size bolts did you guys use on yours?

85cj7
12-03-2008, 07:27 PM
i think they are 7/16" or 3/8", button head hex bolts. 7 per side

Make sure you use some type of locknut or lock washer because when those pan heads get rubbed on some rocks, you will have one hellufa time trying to re-tightening them and you may just have to grind the heads off if you ever need to take them off.

it costs a little bit more when you can't just get them to just 'work for beer', but the kwality of work seems to be a bit better.

Hey you can have Rowdy back if you would like? Maybe I could get a little bit done on my jeep if wasn't always working on something else.

On the sliders.

I used 5 or so bolts on each side, only 4 actually hold the sliders on though 1 is just for looks. use hex head bolts, button heads look nice but get ground smooth. I have never actually taken mine off nor plan too.

Also seal them against the body with some black RTV so dirt and crap can't get between them and the body. They hold up great. Mine are still as strait as the day that I put them on the Jeep.

Neither do I, I have just about 0 faith in my own mechanical skills, which is why I have been asking for help. Now if that U-joint could be talked into getting in there...

Bushings instead of needle bearings? This sounds like the "training wheels" of u-joint assembly.

A 4.0 L with a cracked exhaust manifold...no way!! :flipoff2: Those are pretty easy to do as long as it's not all rusted to ****. I'd start with a can of PB BLaster and shoot all the bolts and everything down right now, the longer it sits on there the better. Does the new manifold come with the little accordian sections so that it can expand/contract?

Edit-Just noticed it was a 4 cyl. I guess Chrysler sucks at all things exhaust...

I'll have it by then, so we will see.

either way, I'm serious about spraying those down with PB Blaster asap. Those bolts have been rusting on there for 10 years now!

If I would have been on time with everything I needed, I might have actually finished my rocker guards...

Can anyone squeeze in some time to help me finish them this week? Or even just let me use their tools?

Surprise surprise, mine is the only one still up on jackstands. Thanks for the help today guys, and glad to see folks got a lot of work done on their rigs. Thanks a ton to blankenship for helping me beat on the CTMs for like 4 hours, and to Seth for coming back and giving us an idea that would have saved us 3 of those hours.

Don't kill yourself trying to get them done. I will have the welder, chopsaw, and grinders at Clayton if you cant get them finished before you leave.

Scotti, I will come in early Wed night if needed and help you out if it's still keeping the jackstands from floating away.
