That's right folks, the hippy is takin the plunge and what better way to send him off to the abyss than to haul your ass to Colorado and get fawkin wasted!!! This is going to be my big trip this year since I have a wedding the next weekend and I will not be coming back stateside until then. I don't know what day I can leave out yet, but with that big of a drive I want to make sure I get up there for more than just a couple of days of good wheelin. The hippy suggests going to Buena Vista and run Carnage Canyon. Now, just have to see how to get some strippers out on the trail with us.

This will be Hippie Bachelor Party #2, BTW. If you were hoping for something a little more "traditional" keep your eye on the CORR website and budget for a plane ticket to Vegas sometime late March/early April :D

edit: and if anyone wants to just take a cheap trip for the weekend, look for tickets into DIA or Colorado Springs the afternoon of the 4th and out the evening of the 7th and I'll pick you up

I actually might be living in Colorado by then.
Have some friends in Buena Vista, love that town.
I know a guy that lets me stay on a cabin on his ranch for free. (well I have to help him with some work for an hour a day)
Heres what it looks like:

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i110/breckboarder55/P1030917.jpg

Its on a ranch with something like a 14k sq/ft house, 10 car garage, and 300 acres or so. The owner is really cool, used to develop shopping centers or something. House was so big I couldn't fit it in one picture.

I was suggesting a possibility of us staying there if he would let us. As long as we do our one hour of work. It has four beds in it, an out house, sun shower. Huge fish in his lake for fishing.

I am definitely going to make one of these - if not both! The CO trip in June is more likely considering the timing of the new baby.

Carnage Canyon is still my favorite.

Make sure your winch works... The first year we ran it, was like the second weekend it was open and there were no bypasses... I thought I was going to die winching up a 15 foot 90 degree wall:gigem:

That should be a somewhat quick job there. I had wire run back there at one time, but don't remember if some of it got pulled out or not. I have plenty of 4-wire trailer lighting wire to use.

I don't know exactly, but probably try to leave out somewhat early. Creighton has to be back at work Monday morning and he has a few hours to drive even once we make it back down to my place. Having not made that drive before, I can only guess at the time it will take. I figure around 15 hours of driving though with out trying to break any speed records. Maybe some of the folks who have gone before can post up.

J Cooper

You got to remember he will be draggin a heavy 32' GN w/ a couple of rigs and he aint got no turbo in that truck of his. Coming back out of the hills/mountains ought to help on the speed/mileage somewhat though.

Say, while I have you here, will you be able to meet us in College Station w/ the Jeep on the 30th or 31st? I figure I can come down and pick up Scotti's buggy too at that time. If not, I can drag it up with me when I fly in on the 28th if you can get a trailer.

those of us that fly in can just ride back to Denver with Eric.

i am guessing the later flight????

1:05 might be pushing it, unless we get up early as crap and drive back to denver and drop of the ugly. the flights in between take twice as long so might as well just hang out for the later flight. at 7:45.... then sleep on the plane

no offense to creightons truck but do you think it can make that kind of haul that long?

i would say go for jerrys truck.... ill throw in a bottle of jim

I don't have concerns with dragging a Gooseneck up there and back with my truck, it runs great and has low miles. I drove hauled almost 100o miles last may with no issues

i didnt say it could not do it, im sure its a great truck.

i meant more of the 97 vs 06 truck, more room, bigger back seat, smoother ride, more cup holders. SRW vs DRW.

if somebody asked me if i wanted to ride 2200 miles round trip in an older truck vs a newer truck i would go with the newer.

i was just thinking pull coop's jeep, and then you can put yours on ed's trailer. Easier for me since coop's jeep is in houston.

bcolman
05-03-2009, 07:15 PM
i figured that, but if you pulled two rigs then there would be a spot for john brown's or david o's rig

jerryg79
05-03-2009, 07:36 PM
3 things would have to happen for that to occur:

1) I would need definites from two more people
2) I would need someone to find another gooseneck
3) I would have to install a gooseneck hitch.

#3 doesnt occur until 1 and 2 do.

Additionally if i have to pay for a hitch, the two people on the trailer would be fitting the bill for fuel. As it is now I was just going to ask coop to pay over what it would cost for me to go up empty.

2050 miles at 19 mpg vs 10-12ish with all those hills in co. so prob about $100.

bcolman
05-03-2009, 07:41 PM

reading through i was going to say... the whole point of me wanting to get on with 2 other vehicles is to split fuel 3-4 ways.

but as long as i do not have to pay for it all my self i am down, it would make since for it to just leave straight from Houston.

we can talk about it more later.

Kopecki, I was thinking this would be best, but I was worried about the weight Creighton's truck was going to have to tote. I think he is working an exhaust brake solution that will help him a bunch, and make scotti's buggy on the car hauler the best choice.

If I pulled Scott's gooseneck my plan would be this:

Meet up with Scott Sunday night (if he hasnt left for Alaska already) get trailer and coop's jeep.

After work on Monday head to CS, put whatever other rig on trailer, sleep at doug's (if he'll have me).

Tues leave early in the morning, put on condom, meet up with yall in Fort Worth or so fill up and head to CO.

On the way home I would go straight to CS drop off krebs and other vehicle, take 290 to Scott's drop off trailer and coop's rig, go home, take off condom.

Even though I'm not driving at all, lets make sure everyone has CB's in the tow and trail vehicles. I've got a CB with a cig lighter plug and a magnet mount antennae. I'll also take care of the 2m HAM:flipoff2:

Cooking? Are we eating out? Cooking at the campsite? I've got a propane cast iron 3 burner stove.

Are we just bringing one tent?:flipoff2:

Etc...

I'm excited!

I was just worried about getting everybody nailed down on if they were going or not so I could try to make sure we had enough trailer space and towrigs. So cut a canadian some slack! :flipoff2:

Camping:

Looks like Turtle Rock campground is the ticket. Off CR 375 outside of Buena Vista

I may have an extra cb or two stashed away in the shed somewhere, but not sure. I definitely have one that will just get swapped from tow to trail rig.

Bring your grill. I should have enough propane tanks to keep up cooking for no bigger of a group than we have. We haven't got into food planning stages yet, but maybe I can get somebody to pick up some slovaceks from snook for one night, but if we are going to just do hamburgers and such, the camp ground is just out of town so we should be able to pick up supplies there.

I have my campground condominium that I can bring (Coop should remember this one :D ) and it will sleep all of us (we will just have to get real cozy is all, but that's the idea right??? ).

any interest in spending a couple of days in buena vista and then heading to telluride/ouray area, there's alot of stuff out that way too. About 180 miles southwest of buena vista.

Just making suggestions, dont know if there is enough to keep us occupied around buena vista for 4 days, but ive never been there.

whats the leave date on this thing?

Those of us driving plan to leave out on the morning of the 2nd. Creighton and I are planning on camping/stopping in Amarillo for the night and finish the drive in on Wednesday and hopefully get some wheeling in on that day. We are going to try to leave out on Sunday morning so everyone can get home in time to get to work on Monday morning. As of now on Tuesday morning, Jerry is going to be leaving from Aggieland , I will be leaving from Rosebud/the ranch, and Creighton is going to head down to Hutto to pick up Curry's Yota and leave from there. We will try to meet up in Waco or Ft. Worth and convoy up from there.

Those flyin in are coming in on the 4th (Thursday) and flying back out on Sunday evening.

Is there anyone else I am missing that might be going up with us?

Whoa, Whoa, stop in amarillo? Poosies! Im gonna stop and get me some of that horny goat weed and keep on truckin'! I was planning on rolling out on tues at 5 or 6 AM.

But seriously depending on how i feel i may keep going, plus krebs can always take the wheel. We'll see, i didnt realize creighton had to goto Hutto.

I havent heard anything out of lu, unless hippie has. Jones is interested. Only problem is if Jones, krebs, and j all go, I'll have 5 in the truck counting JB until we meet up.

wish i would have known this i would have just come in earlier. not a big deal.

if you guys are already going to be down in wheelin territory i say that those of us flying in just catch a ride with eric down thursday night, that way friday morning we are ready to go.

i dont see the point in you guys pulling 3 huge trailers up to denver for no reason.... plus there is no way 1 trailer could even park at erics house... maybe even fit down the street.

If I went, (doubtful) I would have to fly up Wednesday night, and let someone haul Bronco there and back.

I think you are a little optimistic on leaving Amarillo in the morning and wheeling that afternoon.

If you drive straight through, hauling that heavy, I would really plan on 20-22 hours. Thats alot of driving. I have driven to CO alot. It is about 17 hours with a group of 4+ people in a car from CS to SW CO. BV is farther, but you get to stay on 25 for a while.

That's where I'm thinking I'll stop on day 1.

edit: I like this idea. It 750 miles from CS so even at 60 mph that's 12.5 hrs. So 14 probably worst case. Get up around 7ish. save the pretty part of the drive for the morning, roll into BV a little after lunch.

No Motel 6, but there is a Super 8((719) 846-8280), Holiday Inn ((719) 846-4491), Best Western(719) 846-2215), and Budget Host((719) 846-3307).
The Best Western is the one in the middle of town, Super 8 on the north side, and the other two on the south.

There is a Marriot there too, but I am sure us pulling in with the three tow rigs would go over like a sh!t sandwich in the pot luck after church...

50 sounds good. Here is what I got from tx4x4 on the route.

As far as route, I might suggest getting off I-40 in amarillo and head up 87 thru clayton. It's a wide 2-lane and easily passible for you. It does get windy, but that really won't change either way you go. If by some slim chance it's snowing, better have all the weather report #'s handy. We go caught in Clayton one time coming home for Christmas. I have been up hwy 69 to gardner and it was a small 2-lane and I can't tell you what the condition is like now. A good alternate is hwy 50 from Pueblo. It's probably another 40 minutes to pueblo from Walsenburg and then West. Maybe costing you 20-40 minutes of travel time, but the hwy 50 is much better. If you decide on 69, fuel up in Walsenburg as everything else to Salida is small one-horse towns.
