I.E. My version of a camper... I am having an offroad camping trailer built right now. Been in the works for over a month now but I finally have some progress on it and can show ya'll whats going on with it. I originally was building my own, had the Axle and base trailer in my garage but I got so busy with work and everything else, and then ended up trading my Welder for a brand new ARB Air Locker for the Taco and the plan just kind of went to ****. So I am having it built by Outlander Trailers.

I have been around a couple of their trailers in the past and these things are bulletproof (and a helluva lot cheaper than the competition). He is located up in Arkansas.http://www.outlandertrailers.com/ This is a Trailer for the folks that like to drive their rig to the trail, and then drag a comfortable camp behind them down the trail. I plan on taking this thing to Colorado, Big Bend, Clayton (K trails and National Forest not the Freilings property) and hopefully one day Montana. I can lug it behind the FJ on the long comfortable trips or Behind the Taco to Gilmer and Katemcy and set up a base camp to come back too. Enough talky talky more picha time.

It is a Sherpa II RL. I am having it powder coated black on black.
A few key specs and extras on it:
-3500# axle with 6 on 5.5 lug pattern to match my Toyota Tow vehicles
-Black Pacer "D" hole wheels to match the wheels on the Taco
-7 Pole connector to vehicle for constant power for future electrical system
-LED Brake/Turn Signal Lights
-Load Adjusting Coil over shocks
-33"x12.50"x15" Mud Grips
-Receiver hitch neck so that I can slide in any hitch that I want and extend the tongue length.
-Receiver hitch on the back to mount my Freedom Grill
-Currently ordering a Tongue Box and Side Kitchen Box from Northern Tool.

Pics of the build so far, should be getting powder coated on Thursday and I can pick her up in a week or so!

I want to bad. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut the woman cracked the whip on the spending for the rest of the year after she saw the invoice for the Trailer. :D. 2010 is the year of the swap on the Taco. That means it is time to start building up parts now... :gigem:

As far as stabilizing, I haven't decided if I want to do Jacks at the corners or an arm stabilizer setup kinda like this

Actually I am going with a completely different hitch set up called a lock and roll, but again this was done within the wife's budget and the extra $200 was not available at the time.

Haha, I traded a $500 welder that I got for free from Northern, for an $850 brand new air locker that I have no source to get for free. That's just good business.

By June we will have another Welder. We get a credit to Northern every Quarter that my Dad and I redeem on tools and odds and ends we need for the Barn and my Garage. :)

why not just use a pintle hitch? they are much cheaper than 200 bones.

FJAggie07
02-11-2009, 03:52 PM
Well they just don't pull that great. There is always some sort of slack, so when you brake real hard it comes up and hits and the weight shifts. Not to mention they rotate better than a standard ball, but only up to a certain point, I need to look up what their limitation is of rotation is, I know it isn't 360 degrees like the Lock n' Roll. Also for new stuff a Pintle Hitch costs at least 60 bones (http://www.etrailer.com/pc-P~TR63043.htm?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=ppc) and then you have another 30 or 40 in a Lunette Ring and fashioning that to a receiver tube to put in the Trailer, so by the time it is done you are already into it (with time) at least $120.

And finally, well I just want the best. :D

EDIT: Make that 50 or 60 for the ring... http://www.etrailer.com/p-63023.htm and then another 50 to mount it... http://www.etrailer.com/p-AMPC1.htm and there you are at $175 with time, why not drop $200? Remember I like easy and don't really make the time to fab all this stuff myself, so this is my excuse to get what I want the first time. :D

The thing about Outlander is the attention to detail. The Safety Chains come with Caribeaner style clips instead of hooks. He provides you with a 7 pole RV hookup for future brake and power options. He provides you with hitch locks that he has keyed the same so you don't have to carry a ton of keys.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f105/starranchjoker/Trailer/CIMG1282.jpg

To say the least I couldn't be happier with the way it came out. Stay tuned for more mods, and pics from the trail. She will have her maiden voyage in two weeks.

SO bascially, it provides mounting for the tent, a spot for the cooler in the open space up front, and storage inside the boxes?

Looks like you might need a raised ball on the FJ to get it to sit level.

Well it will provide a little more than that I have a lot of things in the plans for it. It will provide a place for my fuel cans also! :flipoff2:

Nah, point is I don't have any room in the Tacoma for camping gear, the wife and dogs. That is where the trailer will come in handy. I also have a tongue box on the way from Northern that will hold dual batteries and a shore power regulater/charger. I plan on running lights all the way around for base camp along with a water tank, pump, and sink.

The overall build is going to be an offroad RV rather than just a Trailer to put all my stuff, or at least that is what I am hoping for. :)

EDIT: I am actually going to leave it a little nose down when towing behind the FJ, I will tow it level with the Tacoma.

I'll ask this question again after you've used it more.

FJAggie07
03-25-2009, 10:14 AM
Someone asked me the same thing on expedition portal, and after thinking about it...

-I want a side box and awning on the driver's to keep all of my kitchen stuff and to provide shade in places that don't have a whole lot of trees like Big Bend and Katemcy.
-I need to figure out a better jack solution, I need something that will get it level. Carrying blocks of wood around is ridiculous. Someone suggested a drop leg jack so I think I will swing by tractor supply over the next couple of days and check one out.
-Water tank, pump and sink for washing dishes and maybe taking a shower would be very cool.
-Finish my electrical system, I want light. I need light inside of the rear box and in the tent. I also want to set up flood lights around the trailer. Right now the electrical system is about 70% complete, just need to finish assembling the parts and wire it up. I have generator, charger, battery, fused marine switch panel, and shore power outlet, but still trying to decide on a box to put it all in.

Doug Krebs
03-25-2009, 10:41 AM
A shower is definitely a good idea, but I can't see having one right next to a trailer unless it had a floor that drained it away from camp. It would make it a muddy mess if not.

DRAGOONRANCH
03-25-2009, 10:59 AM
You don't need to spend much on jacks, just make some simple sliders with bolts (with t-handle on top of them) to mount on the back. lower the front of the trailer, set the two sliders in the rear so that when you raise the front it will set the sliders on the ground. Make sure your jack is long enough to get the tires off the ground completely and that will stabilize it a bunch.

On the shower end of it, just keep a small section of astroturf type material to throw down (but still look to see which way the water will drain).

If the jack description above is confusing, then I will try to find some pictures and explain better tomorrow at the office.

uglyota
03-25-2009, 11:03 AM
I am guessing these sliders you are talking about are not screw jacks? I would make one of the back ones (as well as the front one, of course) micro-adjustable so he can get the thing perfectly level

DRAGOONRANCH
03-25-2009, 11:12 AM
yeah, just pretty much square tubing w/ a small foot on the bottom of it, inside of a larger piece of square tubing (like a receiver hitch) with a bolt on the side of it to tighten it down. Simple, cheap and easy to replace when someone forgets to put it up before they take off with it. :D

Get a couple of the 'RV levels' from wally world if you want to get it real level.

Graystroke
03-25-2009, 01:51 PM
you can get similar jacks like they use on pop ups and you can actually lift the trailer w/ a small handle..kind of like a bumper jack. they swing up and out of the way. check your local RV parts place...i'm sure they sell them. they also have feet on them.

FJAggie07
03-25-2009, 02:45 PM
The situation isn't with Jacking up the rear, to make it side to side level, but jacking up the tongue. The current jack is not tall enough to get it level so it sits at a downward angle. I need to find a replacement jack that is tall enough to make a trailer with 33s and lift level, and has a caster.

But all of these ideas are really good for figuring out how to get it level side to side. I will have to look into that as i use it more.

BMFScout
03-25-2009, 02:48 PM
Not to be a dick, but for what you paid it doesn't come with jacks that will get it level? I'd be asking the manufacturer what's up with that.

DRAGOONRANCH
03-25-2009, 03:14 PM
If you cant find one with a good caster, they have some good caster wheels that can be welded/bolted on to the bottom of the jack foot. A pneumatic tire would be nice to help move it around on rough terrain, but wont give you the stability a plastic or hard rubber wheel will.

FJAggie07

Oh and the whole tongue weight is maybe 60 pounds. It can be easily lifted by hand, the rolling resistance of the 33's and weight of the trailer make it difficult to move off road, but easy in the garage.

I don't think you need 5 inches for 37's probably only 3 or 4

Pretty sad when your trailer has bigger tires than your jeep

The motel worked well last night. Came back from northgate last night and pulled the trailer into a friends driveway, popped open the tent and crashed. Woke up this morning with the adjoining duplex neighbors staring at us, good times. :gigem:

Clark: So, when did you get the tenament on wheels?
Eddie: Oh, that uh, that there's an RV. Yeah, yeah, I borrowed it off a buddy of mine. He took my house, I took the RV. It's a good looking vehicle, ain't it?
Clark: Yeah, it looks so nice parked in the driveway.
Eddie: Yeah, it sure does. But, don't you go falling in love with it now, because, we're taking it with us when we leave here next month.

wait so you dragged that thing down to College Station just so you'd have a place to crash after the bar? Rather than having the tent mounted on the back of the tundra like you had it before?

How do you show off your new trailer and rubicon to your friends if you take the tundra with the tent attached? (Do they still have the tundra? I thought they traded that on the lexus or whatever chiny import they got?)

Well I went with my mom to get her checked in there on friday night and after actually seeing what the room looked like inside, and the fact that her room was in a "back building" I decided she wasnt staying there. We had already checked in but went back to the front desk and demanded a refund. Now, I worked at a hotel for a few months so I know how this would have played out at any place that wasnt a ****hole.

Guest- "I want a refund, I'm not staying here"
Hotel- "I'm sorry sir I cant do that, if you choose to check out early you will still be charged for both nights because it is graduation weekend"

Instead, they did not give us a single problem. I'm guessing guests do this prety frequently there. All the local hotels also usually double or tripple their rates on game and graduation weekends, but still always fill up. The Plaza, however, does not. Maybe my mom will get around to making her reservation more than a week before next time she comes to visit...

so is it just me or did it look like the tires on the trailer were bigger than the jeep? and why put mud tires on it, would it actually get enough traction difference to matter or was it just looks

It was just looks and the tires were never put on there to match the jeep, they were put on to match the Tacoma. I didn't get the Jeep until after I got the trailer.

EDIT: In fact, technically the increased rolling resistance of the 12.5" of width and the aggressive tread pattern would inhibit Fuel Economy of the trailer. Although in my opinion this was negligible considering the weight of the trailer was only 1000 lbs. This trailer would have pulled anywhere with 33x9.50 All Terrains.

Let's see...you tell us you bought something, then tell us that you sold it and made a boatload of money, but you never shared what you paid for it, what you paid for the accessories, how many miles you drove to go pick it up, or what you sold it for? Do you have any idea how douchey this makes you sound?

All you had to do was ask. Bought it for $3750, Selling it for $4700. Drove out to Gilmer to pick it up (met the guy from Arkansas where his operation is). I am including the Roof Top Tent in the sale but I have nothing in it due to my original mishap (got damaged, claimed on Insurance) with my first Roof Top Tent, got way more money back than I was expecting (2.5x) on the first one and got the second one with the overage money and the rest covered my deductible . Anything else you want to know? Seems to me, folks around here would rather **** on someone through their assumptions, rather than just come out and ask a question.

I am only selling because I saw the opportunity. I have had it for 9 months, and I don't plan on using it anytime soon with expecting my baby in 3.5 months. Maybe in a year when the baby is a little more grown I will buy a Travel Trailer for the family. :)

the main reason you sound like a douche is that nobody ever asked you what you bought it for or sold it for, or if you made or lost money on the deal. You obscurely volunteer that you got a great deal, or that you made money on the deal. We don't care, but we will call you out on a lie or brag.
And whether you think you had any money in the rooftop tent or not, it was worth something.

The crap rolls out your mouth again
Haven't changed, your brain is still gelatin
Little whispers circle around your head
Why don't you worry about yourself INSTEAD!!!

Gossip burning on the tip of your tongue
You lie so much you believe yourself
Judge not l'est ye be judged yourself

Holier than thou

You know not

Before you judge me take a look at you
Can't you find something better to do
Point the finger, slow to understand
Arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand

It's not you are it's who you know
Others lives are the basis of your own
Burn your bridges and build them back with wealth
Judge not l'est ye be judged yourself

Holier than thou
