Im looking at an 04 3/4 ton with a Duramax. 95k. Its one of our sales guys. The problem is it gets 13.5 mpg, on paper and electronically. I know of 3 other 2/4wd 3/4 tons that get 18-22. Our one ton duallys at work only get 11-12 but they are both at 18k.
I have put Rotella T in it, and besides a programmer etc what else could be the problem.

Karl, DavidO?

How long has it been getting this mileage?

EDIT: What engine does it have? LB7 or LLY (8th # in VIN)

I can get pretty regularly atleast 17 mpg. I have a 2006 3500 SRW 4x4 with the 6 speed auto. I drive pretty quick. Before when I baby it and do a lot of highway miles I can get close to 20.

13.5 seems horrible, does it have aftermarket or larger tires? A giant diesel leak?

my dad's '04 CC LWB 4X4 gets 17 combination from new until now w/ 150k on the clock. my friend has an '06 Ext Cab SWB 4X4 w 50k on the clock and it only get's 14 max... I think some trucks are just unlucky.

Did yours come with 4.10s? I think mine has something around a 3.7

texasxj

No more 4.10s for me, the dodge has taught me well.

DRAGOONRANCH

Most did/do come with the 3.73. I think it was standard with the stick when it was available, with the 3.73 as an option. They don't even offer the 4.10 anymore until you get over a tonn (kodiak) IIRC.

bcolman
08-14-2009, 11:41 AM
yeah, i upped my tire size to 35's so it is more like i have 3.73's, with the stock size tires i only got 16.5 unloaded on the highway

Here is a link on rekeying (http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/general-discussion/offroad/65871-ford-keys-torsion-bar-cranking-replacing-tech.html) the front to level it out.

bcolman

mine already sits level, and has the stock keys, and it doesnt appear that it is not at the factory setting(the main reason i say that is the first owner was an older lady and the previous owner only had it for 3 months and he said more than half of it he was out of town on business and thats why he sold it)

Follow up: The truck got 15.6 mpg so far after my Rotella T addition. On the other hand, the dodge's tranny pooped out on me, rather pissed me off enough to take it in, and my jewishness kicked in a little. No personal duramini for a while.

the problem is you are running the wrong oil.

You need to run AMSOIL

2003 4x4 CC. 90k miles. Is yours speed related? I get 18 if I'm in the 75-80 MPH range and closer to 22 if I keep it at 70 MPH. BIG difference. I can get it down to 14 in BCS stop and go if I'm heavy on it. Typically around 18 on a tank of mixed driving.

DRAGOONRANCH

Which fan are you saying is kicking in, AC/ventilation fan or cooling fan? Warm truck or first thing in the morning? I will check tomorrow, but haven't noticed anything weird.
