Well it is time for a new project. The goal of this rig is to be the "family" rig with good back seat and such for kids.

Current specs:
2001 Ford Explorer Sprort
109K miles
103" Wheel Base
68" Tall
15' Long
68" Wide
235 tire ~28"
and 2wd

Plans:
Transmission Tailhouse conversion (5R55W 2wd and 4wd are same besides the tailhouse part)
STAKK 3speed
Axles will either be Bronco's current 60/10.25 or old 44/9" that Nix has now. I'd like the 44/9" but that is limited to when he does his conversion to 1-ton and I want to do this sooner than later.

Tires will be 35-37" with the 44/9" combo
or 39.5" that I already have with 60/10.25 combo

I want to keep this think 80-82" tall so it fits in the garage good

So at 68" tall I have 14" to play with.

I figure 6" lift from the 39.5"s so that puts me to 8" of lift

It will be leafsprung in the back. and coil up front.

I may do leaf-springs up front but that would require the spring hangers on the bumper because the frame is 28.5" to 32" wide up front... it will depend on which axle combo I go with also.

This is just the planning stages but I will be getting parts together soon also.

this isnt a very hard build... the only thing i might have trouble with is the transmission conversion and I am going to have a shop do that so it shouldn't be much of an issue.

I think "Who's" was actually correct...isn't it? Contraction for "Who is," whereas "whose" is posessive, e.g. "Emma the Explorer, whose name should probably have been Dora, is probably wondering who's going to buy her worthless carcass and pile of parts when Tate gives up on her"

I have wondered why more people don't build these things. You basically get 1/2 ton drivetrain with them.

Yes, they are heavier than something like an XJ, but you do get a real frame to work with. Just how heavy is a 2-door? You keeping the glass in it?

why dont you just sell that and take the bronco body to the scrap yard and get a toyota.

why not sell that explorer buy one of these. throw on some tires and call it done.
and you can be wheeling in a week instead of years.

Why don't you just get one of these and call it a day? This is pretty much where I see this thread going.

Yeah, converting a 2wd to 4wd, That is like an afternoon build. Simple.

I was thinking the same thing. Get a different rig. With this market, people are unloading toys all over the place. I like the Cruiser idea. Those can be had on the cheap, right Grayson. :)

Shaggy
08-28-2009, 04:34 PM
cruisers are too big... and this explorer isn't worth crap in resell right now so why not build it... and 2wd to 4wd isnt that bad... all the front end has to come out for a SAS anyways what does it matter if it is 4wd... a tranny change and it is good as starting with 4wd

cruiser only has 112 in WB 188 in long furd 101" WB 180" long...that's only 8"longer that your furd.

here some chadnutz math for you
furd value: $2500
axle/tranny swap/lift etc...I'm guessing at least: $3000
tires: $1200
time: 30 hrs say at $40/hr: $1200
total: $7900
or w.o truck value in there $5400

Nice cruiser $5000
tires $1000
time:0.00
Total: $6000
minus $2500 for furd
$3500

and it you will probably get every penny spent on the cruiser back out of it when you sell it, unless you really fawk it up.

I say build the furd...we need another chadnutz thread...I'm guessing 45 pgs and no functioning 4wd.
Is someone doing squares on this?

step one look at explorer, step two look at prices and time to convert a truck to 4-wd,sas,etc, Step three smash your testicles with a hammer and save yourself 2 years of a build up and buy someone elses 5-8k built rig.

Ohh and good luck with the build:gigem:

stak doesn't make an adapter for the explorer tranny yet... atlas is the only option right now... why is everyone so negative on this board... just let people have fun... doug still hasn't built his imaginary buggy and noone seems to give him crap... I don't know for sure if I will do this yet... I am in the planning state... If I do it, it won't be a long buildup. I will take a couple weeks off work and knock it out
