I am looking for a Deer Rifle for my brother as a Christmas present. I figured someone may want to unload something between now and Christmas so I figured I would get a jump on it.

.243, 22-220 or whatever. Not real particular, just don't want one that is completely worn out.

Ed look at .25-06 for him this is what I started with and still use mainly today, it is a little less kick than the .30-06 and it very flat shooting. Mine isn't for sale but I would look into those. You can get a new one from savage for a decent price.

If you end up buying new, Savage cant be beat for best value.

If you figure out what you want brand-wise I'll run up the numbers for you in a PM. If I get a few minutes I'll try to put the basics together for a few different manufacturers.

Question, if we go with 270, 270 winchester or 270 wsm?

Sharpe

Ammo cost- winchester. I'm not sold on the whole WSM or WSSM idea (short fat cartridges with insanely high chamber pressures). I dont see any advantage of a short action bolt gun, I see it more as a marketing gimmick.

At the risk of turning this into something other than intended...

first deer rifle? After a .22, my kid's first rifle will be a nice lever action .30-30. Youngun's not going to be taking stupid long shots at a deer, and doesn't need a $1500 gun, but hopefully it will be something useful that he can be proud of, and that he can pass on to his kid and grandkid

I agree with Sharp. If the gas station out in the sticks carries ammo, they've got regular .270. I personally don't like .270, just because it was a marketing scheme that caused the fall of a much better round, .264 mag. Therefore, we are all worse off because of the .270.

I had a feeling the consensus would be 270. I will see what we can find in a Savage w/ synth stock. I may just let him have my scope and upgrade to a better version for my 7mag one of these days.

Hippie, I think my grandad has a lever action 30-30, but I know that I have never shot it. I will definitely have to break into his gun cabinet for the Colorado trip next year. ;)

Will you be getting a Savage with an Accutrigger?

I have no clue. Why do you ask? (good or bad?)

I have it on a fancy .22. Seems to be excellent.

I have a super nice .25-06 for sale. Might be a little more than you are looking for though. It's a 26" stainless Shilen bull barrel on a Rem 700 action with a super light trigger and a Leupold 6.5-20x scope. It's not really a good first rifle for a kid. My first was a stainless Ruger M77 MkII .270 with a Leupold 3-9x. Still is my primary rifle, until I find the .308 I want.

Yep, sounds like more than we are looking for right now. How hard is it to find ammo for that rifle?

easier than finding .223 or .308

My first deer gun was an m-1 carbine with a 15 round magazine.

Brady would actually probably really dig a classic gun. You know, if you want to buy Grayson's K98k for him I'll pass the deal to you. I hope he's still planning to sell it to me at least...

he is still kicking around the idea of a Dragunov. I just don't think that would be a very good deer rifle. I will try to pick his brain about the k98k though. How hard would it be to fit a modern scope on that one I wonder?

I think putting a scope on that gun means drilling and tapping :(

I was looking it up on wiki, and looks to take some very off the wall ammo too.

its a DEER rifle. how many rounds do you plan on putting through it? Im still on the same box from 3 years ago. unless he cant hit the broad side of a barn, then i understand.

Go with a lever action 30-30, they are cheap and if he decides to get something better it will make a great truck gun.

some very cheap off the wall ammo.

I'm pretty sure they all have scope rails and that an AK siderail will fit if you don't want to use the dirty russian optics.

edit: were you talking about the dragunov or k98k?

Some people like to practice :flipoff2:

7.62x54 may not be that common at Academy, but I have seen plenty of it at Gander (however overpriced...). Then there's always the option of mailordering it ahead of time...

Ammo is a bit of a touchy subject at the house. Remind me at Clayton about the idiot at Wal-Mart and I will tell you the story. ;)

I will definitely have incorporate that into a shirt or something of the like. :gigem:

K98k. I will expand on my thoughts on kommie weapons later.

I believe that Brady will end up putting a bunch of rounds through this one before it's all over with. One of the ranch neighbors has a 600yd range setup that he can use pretty much at any time, and we have a few tanks that have absorbed a few rounds over the years also. :gigem:

The only commie thing I am interested in mail ordering is a bride. :flipoff2:

Just wondering...i have an accutrigger on my 22mag and i love it. Its a very smooth squeeze and crisp release. I believe its adjustable from 2.5 to 6 lbs.
