I want to make this a truck that i can wheel all day and drive home. I won't go any bigger than 35's because the axles really can't handle it.

Nice, is that bumper prefab or custom?

TdmayfieldIV

a guy from fullsizebronco.com built it for me. I designed it and he built it.

BroncoJo
01-11-2010, 06:05 PM
There are many threads on FSB about them breaking. Hasn't Ryan had quite a few problems too?

I would suggest a full Detroit if still DD it, or a Spool if it becomes a toy.

Haha... Every hub I've dicked with besides spicer originals have the ability to come apart internally and not work. Its happened to me a couple of times on the trail. Not really a big deal but a PITA. I havent ever bought a new set of hubs though, I'm on my third or fourth set of hand-me-down 30 spliners so take that for what its worth.

shut up. You're delivering pizzas, right? Hardly lucrative in the first place, and you don't deliver pizzas in a new car (well at least if you have any sense and are paying for it yourself). I bet your income from that job is negative if you take mileage/wear and tear/depreciation of the car into account.

I see his pizza delivery career, being like that movie Loverboy from the 80's, except there are alot more deliveries of "Large Sausage and Mushroom with a side of Frat House Gang Bangs" delivered.

did you order a new shaft and it is still to long? Where did you order it from and what part number?

stx4wheeler
03-01-2010, 08:56 PM
7/8's off the inner, if you chop off the stub your hubs won't go back together or find the right shaft.

TdmayfieldIV
03-01-2010, 09:20 PM
I got them from a guy on fullsize bronco. If i take 7/8ths off will it still fit into the carrier?

colman
03-01-2010, 09:46 PM
assuming it doesn't kneck up after the splines. never cut a stub. it has a machined lip at the end a c-clip goes. as long as it is a ford stub i believe it is the same. is it the same size as your old stub

BroncoJo
03-01-2010, 10:09 PM
I'm still confused as to why your shaft is consistently an inch shorter. I would suggest a visual inspection before cutting.

BroncoJo

DRAGOONRANCH
03-02-2010, 02:20 AM
What ever you do, make sure that the center of the u-joint is going through the center of the kingpins/balljoints. If it is out of line, it is going to bind up when you turn and cause problems.

TdmayfieldIV
03-02-2010, 04:48 PM
the stub shaft is the correct length, so if i cut the inner to the correct length then the u-joint should be in the center.

RCcola55
03-02-2010, 05:12 PM
dude really if this is being trhat much of a pain in the ass to get the right shaft, suck it up and get a custom one made. I think i can speak for everyone else here in saying something is off about what was in there if everything that you are ordering is wrong.

I didn't order them from a site. I got them from a guy who said that he thinks that they were from a 79 bronco. i can order the parts online but i don't want to spend the money.

RCcola55
03-02-2010, 09:13 PM
This is an EXPENSIVE hobby, get used to spending a little extra money, esspecially on something like an axle shaft! Being a joo about it isnt the way to go unless you know what you are doing.

85cj7
03-02-2010, 09:15 PM
why not finding out if the shafts you got from the guy who 'thinks' the shafts are from a 79 is or is not actually from a 79? What is the length of the shaft supposed to be? What is the length of the shaft you got from the guy? What is the length of the shaft that you broke that was in the bronco?

RCcola55
03-02-2010, 09:18 PM
He just needs to suck it up and order the correct shaft all ready!

85cj7
03-02-2010, 09:18 PM
look, i'll even help.
long side inner of a 79 is supposed to be 33.91"
short side inner of a 79 is supposed to be 14.78"
stub shaft of a 79 is supposed to be 9.72"

Now, what is the length of the two (new one from fsb and old broken one) that you have at hand?

TdmayfieldIV
03-02-2010, 09:23 PM
the shaft i pulled out of the bronco is about 34". Dr. N says that it should be 33 29/32". So that is right for my bronco. The shaft that i got is about 7/8" too long so it is about 34 7/8" which would match up to a

78-79 f-250 or 150 supercab truck
69-77 f-250

I don't think that my axle is messed up i just think he pulled the shaft out of one of these trucks.

To answer your original question, yes you can chop off PART of the splined portion. Is this the right way to do it, NO. You are reducing the spline engagement which potentially could fubar the carrier and twist the splines. Also, if you did chop the shaft you can not do things like say the shaft is "about 34"" you have to be precise and subtract the exact amount to the hundredths place on the end of the shaft.

i was literally a minute late from loading up an entire chassis and drive train at bryan iron.

problem is Canadians are somehow getting ahold of all these old cars/trucks and scrapping dem fo fodeys instead of thinking and parting them out for 2-3x more.

Check with Houston Drivetrain Service.....

I've done a ton of business with them building custom driveshafts and ordering "hard to find" axle shafts, great service and products. I used to have a dodge d44 and had trouble sourcing shafts so I went to them, I think I paid $120ish for a complete inner and outer side. That was back in 05 or 06 though....

If you bought both sides it might not be a bad deal, you would have extras then...i agree you need to find the right part.

$50-$70 in steel. Plus the cost of recovery points at $15 each, plus the cost of the hinge and latch around $70 or so.

Ryan the bronco looked like that at one point? And now you have cut it up? Whassamatta witchu?

Did the green thing used to be a 4runner? Looks kindasorta familiar.

Tommy if you're not ready to go full on interior cage, consider a tube bed/cage with a super burly main hoop and a front bumper with some sort of stinger on it. Doesn't need to be full on boner bar, just something that gets level with the hood. The theory is that in a hard roll you, your passenger and your motor will all be beneath the plane from stinger to top of hoop, and as long as neither of those gets crushed it will take a huge rock to poke far enough through that plane (i.e. your roof) to injure you

FIFY

I also gave you some sweet 4 linked rockwells with some beadlock rims, and a high lift. But I think you should go with 53" michelins now.

Found this pic on my computer. I tried driving up that dirt hill in a construction site and it died halfway up.

I shouldn't have taken all of the trim off, it looked pretty good back then.....

There is only one true fix for that problem.

Or EFI

neither. Efi is not economically feasable for an m block and propane is for bbq's. Tbi is the plan.

Not efi

Good one. All along I thought tbi was a computer telling a couple of fuel injectors when to inject fuel in to the intake. What is it if it isn't EFI?

Sharpe

Electronic Fuel Injection

Ok, I am biting my tongue here, what I meant is that a ford efi setup will not be economically feasable because that would require efi heads, new fuel lines etc.

Yes tbi is fuel injection but I thought it was different being a low pressure system that injects from one place rather than injectors at each cylinder.

injects. fuel. according to an electronic trigger.

google TPI, MPFI, CPI...and TBI :D

I think Chevy TBI actually runs at a higher pressure than the Ford injection, but I could be wrong.

I didn't say anything about using ford ****. Did ford ever even make a M motor that was EFI?
