I am thinking about buying a Dodge Dakota

sam_hodnett
03-13-2010, 02:55 AM
What I know about it now:

It is a 4x4 1987 Dodge Dakota, single cab short bed
It has a flat bed and an approx 4" lift with 33s on it
It is a manual transmission
It runs decent
It belongs to a friend of mine from high school and he bought another toy and is selling this... This was his daily driver for 2 years

$800

Bad
Broken cv axle
He said it "smokes" a little, but i dont think it is a big issue

I will post pictures later after i go look at it and talk to him more

For that price (and depending on which engine and exactly what is about to go wrong with it) I don't think you could go wrong and it would definitley be out of the ordinary. If it's a 318 in it, it would be peemp for sure.

Its a V6, I do like this truck a lot, its a neat little rig,

Eckert

no such thing as a '84 dakota. it would be referred to as a rampage or something to that extent.

IF and big IF your lucky it will be a TBI 3.9L, AX15, np231. which wouldn't necessarily be a bad combo to build a rig off off.

but the rest of the truck is ugly as sin, and sucks.

you may think that $800 isnt a bad deal, but i doubt you could sell it for that much. you better hope it has the title, or it aint worth ****.

if it is carb'd and not a 87+ dakota. run far, far away.

sam_hodnett
03-14-2010, 09:47 PM
You are correct, it is an 87, dont know why i thought that it was an 84

fix that cv with a Dana 44, can't be that hard to hang a solid axle under, and it would be different.
But I doubt it's as good a deal as John's ZJ

did a little research for you...

if your right about being an '87

3.9L carb'd v6
dont know what 5 spd, but the AX15 wasnt introduced until later
np207
and some shatty axles

Im willing to bet it has the same trans as sharpes S10. and is worth about the same or less.

on the other hand: unidbodys suck, as do 46RE's

keep looking

Thanks, What would have to be done to make it start without spraying gad into the intake?

I dunno prolly installing a new fuel pump. I bet he will take somewhere in the $350 range for it maybe less I'd start at like $250 and go up.

Re-named, Buckwheat
I have a 96 Cadillac with a 4.8L V8 that is sitting in a pasture on my ranch for a few years, it is a front wheel drive car, but i only need the motor, can i put it in Buckwheat? any reasons not to?

If you're going to swap motors, you might as well do something like a 350 that's easy to find parts for. A caddy wouldn't bolt up to anything would it? So I don't know why it would be a viable option at all.

DRAGOONRANCH
07-06-2010, 11:45 PM
I vote for something easier also. Did the 4.8 ever go in front of anything rear wheel drive? Is the car still driveable? If so, maybe list it on CL as a trade for a drivetrain, and save a big headache.

"Northstar V-8
The candidate: In '93, grannymobile Cadillacs began running GM's premier DOHC 4.6L Northstar engine. With dual overhead cams, four-valves-per-cylinder, and an output of either 275hp/300lb-ft (LD8) or 300hp/295lb-ft (L37), the all-aluminum Northstars combined light weight, high strength, and smooth power delivery in one iconic package. The catch was that up until the LC3 came along in '07, all Northstars were transversely-mounted in front-wheel drive applications.

The perception: I'll buy a '90s Caddy for $800, yank the engine, and slap it in my Wrangler and go!

The reality: The transverse-mounted architecture is a nightmare to overcome. For starters, the log-style oil pan can't be chopped into a rear-sump design. Then, the intake manifold must be turned 180-degrees on the engine and the water pump manifold and water pump removed from the rear of the engine and replaced with an electric water pump for firewall clearance.

The exception: The engine architecture works well for rear-engine sand rail applications and, indeed, these engines are supported with aftermarket wiring harnesses and stand-alone ECUs.

We think: Leave 'em to the buggies. If you really need a DOHC Northstar, go find yourself an Olds 3.5L Shortstar V-6, add a turbo, and pretend you're running the V-8."

Sounds like it would be a bitch, if you want a cheap V-8... Go with a you know what...

While those Northstars are plenty ballsy and have the Cadi bling factor, they are too much of a PITA for this application. All the **** Adam pointed out, plus IIRC the starter is in the lifter valley. Not exactly the easiest engine to work with. Not to mention finding a RWD transmission that will bolt up.

Conclusion: Get some seat time with whatever engine is in it now before tearing apart and spending twice as much as you budgeted on an engine swap :gigem:

the only reason tht I am thinking boutdoing an engine swap is becasu as the truck is right now, it smokes like a professional mosquito fogger. I'll prolly either rebuild it or find a junkyard motor for it. I was just ondering if this motor swap was possible because I already have the car. Thanks for the advice!

try some marvel mystery oil or something else before you drop the coin on a rebuild or a swap, it may get you a year or so before you have to do anyting and thats money you can spend to go wheeling

This is great, when do you need me to drag it to Paris?:gigem:

Honestly I don't think anything less than a turn-key off road rig is for Sam, he has too much farmer in him, when something breaks it will never get fixed but instead just sit where ever it broke at.

I am really wanting to replace it, but it is going to have to be an already built rig like Travis stated, I do not have the time, knowledge, or motivation to get a project.

And Travis, we will talk about it later :gigem:

Edit: I am going to finish my AR this summer so who knows
