After Jimmy grenaded his 44 Avalanche arms, I decided I would not be a sheep and look at other companies. If you know of any others, post them up.

are you going to use hummer wheels with your new setup? I think shakerbuilts are the only ones that will fit that you listed.

I'd go with his. 100 bucks is hard to beat.

yeah, jimmy "grenaded" an arm alright. It's not like it blew apart or snapped off and damn near killed somebody. It had a hole that had become elongated. I'll defend them on this one. They admitted it was an old design, replaced it with a new one for free with very little hassle. The new one is very nice and on the truck right now. If this one screws up, then fine, but until then I think they are a pretty nice part.

yeah, we'll see what happens with the avalanche poop, if another one fawks up I will try to get them to send me some of their two way arms when they get them designed, I think that would be cool to run the tie rod out back, not sure if it would work or not on my setup. They said it could have been a manufacturing defect, I know it was installed correctly, so we will see, the new arm is a little different, but not significantly different. If it fawks up as well, I will tell them where to stick it, but as of right now I am going to wheel it. The avalanche arms by far look the coolest at least, the new ones have avalanche machined into the side insteadof those stickers :) So I will look like a badass on the side of the trail :(

That was a little tongue and cheek there Fredo;) So are the new arms thicker across (that is my main concern with them). Doesn't seem like there is enough metal there to resist the lateral forces.

Flem, I am not going hummer wheels at this time but I am looking at 17 inchers. The big concern is that 37x17 MT/R's are D/E load ranged and the 15 inchers are a C load range.

I like the Rockstomper, but the two problems I see are that they aren't beveled and they are not machined for tie rod ends. Probably easily solved, but I will have to ask them.

I like the Skybuilt and the price seems right - 79$ apiece. But in all reality, they are all about 100$ an arm. I'll see how Jimmy's new ones do before crossing Avalanche off the list.

after looking at mine some more I have come to the realization that there is no way to make them any thicker then they are and still run TRE's. The have to have a little room between the top of the arm and the bottom of the TRE, and fully tightened down there is just enough room on the bottom to slip in a cotter pin. They are as thick as they can be with TRE's. c'mon brandon, you know you are going to go with the lowest bidder anyway :)

lowest bidder would be shakerbuilt

by thicker, I actualy mean wiiiiider, i.e. some more beaf on the outside and inside.

Oh and BTW, I don't go for the lowest price, I find what I consider the best quality/value/build and then beat them down to a silly low price;) Just a little Jackasic shopping tips for the kids.

Shakerbuilt is actualy near the bottom. Not much fit or finish there.

The two I like best so far are:

extreme gear offroad for 150$ a piece (ouch!)

and these from OTT at for 220$ a pair for the flat and 310 for the bent:

And Mark, no getto fabed RJ Lynn arms for me:p

near the bottom for fit and finish? how?

you dont need a twist to it for tie rod ends, and Jimmy didn't need any blocks or lift in the arm on his setup, so you shouldn't either. they are also setup for a lot of backspacing.

good points, maybe I judged to harshly:o

That is kind of why I put it out here, to get good feed back. Why wouldn't I need it beveled? I would think that would be manditory on tie rods.

I am not sure on the spacers though, Jimmy is running stock springs and I am planing to run it with my SkyJackers. I want to wait till the SOA is on to see what will work best.

Any other thoughs or things I may have missed?

I think I would rather have the stepped up arm over a spacer, but I dont think that'll be an issue unless you use the 1 ton tie rod ends that have that drop down in them (pic on that site you posted) 1/2 ton blazer ones should be fine, I've never heard of anyone breaking them, and they aren't exactly hard to find if you can pull it off.

The twist to the arm doesnt make any sence to me. maybe for the draglink, but the tie rod shouldn't have an angle to the mount. those pics show a drivers side arm with an angle which is stupid unless its right hand drive, but even then only 1 hole should be at an angle.

I think a ball jointed rod end will have enough movement in it that a drag link won't be a problem either. it seems to be all hype to me, and I haven't seen any good reasons to run a twisted arm on POR unless your using heim joints.

so what did yall decide to be the best bang for the buck?

Jackasic

I didn't. I sold my 44/60 combo because I didn't think the front would hold up to 37's. I guess I am going to do the Dave performance package now - 60/14 with humer wheels.

I think it might hold up if you put the scout on a diet. That is what I am going to try anyway, lose anything that doesn't make it off-road better. Things I am thinking of losing after May: back seat, doors, tailgate, top, under dash air conditioning, I am also back to thinking a fuel injected small block Chevy would be pretty sweet. It would have to be a helluva lot lighter, and of course it would be hella cheap to build... A 'glass hood is not out of the question, and anything else I can hack out. Clayton taught me that my rig is too heavy, I have too much exposed sheetmetal, and carbs suck at some point, even if they are set up right, and a rear anti-wrap bar would be a good idea. It was definitely a learning experience, not something I want to learn everytime I go out, but a learning experience.

Yea, that is why I am leaning back towards building an 800. I think I just want to keep my Scout the way it is, abit repair her, and have another one for serious wheeling. i just enjoy cruzing around in Thumper the way she is, AC and all.
