So I've got an Aussie locker that wants to be part of the Halloween trip in my Dana 30. Who wants to help install it? I also have some tow hooks and may get some shackles for proper recovery points- that need to be installed. Any takers?

Do you know what your doing or are you looking to learn? That can be a fair amount of work so offering adult refreshments might net some more help. Post up your rig in the project forum to let people get an idea of what you are working with.

Also come to the meeting this Wednesday, I might be able to open my shop up for a day and demonstrate proper recover points and or offer some ideas.

installing an Aussie in a dana 30 is not to tough however you do have to remove the ring gear from the carrier to install the locker.

You just need to make sure that you make the ring gear in relation to the carrier and install it in the same position.

you will need to get a roll pin punch to remove the roll pin that hold the center pin in place it is only a couple of bucks at Harbor freight.

other than that the only special tools you will need are a torque wrench, rubber malet or dead blow, and some red locktite for the ring gear bolts (they will back out if you don't put red locktite on them)

If you need anything else just let me know I have a full factory service manual for the TJ

Lockers are axle specific. I highly doubt that your toyota came with a reverse rotation dana 30 axle up front, like in later jeeps. You would need a locker for your specific axle based off make/model.

The cheapest I could find new trailer tires in CS, was bryan tire or whatever the name of that place is on texas N on the right hand side (everyone goes their, you know where I am talking about). They were $75 for 225x70x16 IIRC.

dont use used 'car' tires, they dont have the load rating for a trailer, but i dont see any reason not to use a used truck tire if a true trailer tire is out of the question money wise

like tyler said make sure to carry a spare, and you might be able to find some tires on craigslist cheap

gonna be hard to find a truck tire in the 205-225 variety suit for his use. any meskin shop will get you 4 new trailer tires for $300 cash out the door.

another place to get trailer tires is the trash pile at tire places. u don't need alot of tread on a trailer tire. just for it to have the highest load rating you can get your hands on and no dry rot. tires that are no longer good for a car can work on a trailer......

With all due respect, and I do mean, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, that is the dumbest post on the internet at this time. Just look it up on that alexis site or whatever. It has a dumb index of like one brazillion....

:flipoff2:

DON'T cheap out on trailer tires unless you are stuck trying to get home from a trip. Trying to save a few bucks on a tire might cost you ten fold that when it blows out. Especially if you are towing someone else's rig.

Hankook F19's are good tires, don't know that they have them in a 15 though.

Keep an eye out for 80 Series parts on all of these club websites. They are all Texas based clubs that are either Toyota 4x4 enthusiasts or straight up Land Cruiser clubs. Most folks have 80 Series cruisers for family hauling duty so parts are plentiful. The final link is to IH8MUD the numero uno source for all Land Cruiser stuff (but I am sure you already knew that :flipoff2:) Their classified section is extensive and plentiful. Someone will be selling something somewhere.

Also to install any thing in your 80 series Diff (it is a 9.5" Chunk) you will have to drop the actual diff out of the axle not just pull the cover on the back side. In my opinion it is actually easier than the jeep and one-ton boys but to each their own. :)

For the record, my trailer has one radial trailer tire, one bias ply trailer tire and two bias ply truck tires on it. If blow outs become an issue, I have 3 more 7.50-16 truck tires that will be used before any new ones are bought. Two of them are co-op mud type tires :gigem:

I second about good trailer tires. I am glad I spend the money on good tires because Corpus, colorado, california, colorado, dallas would have been a long trip with ****ty tires .

That being said good tires will do 80 cheap ones won't however this only applies if you truck can pull said trailer at 80 :gigem:

Yea, ill open up my solidworks from engr 112 and get some sketches drawn during class. I got a flat steel bar from home depot that I figure if I cut it in half and stack it, then punch a hole thru, itll be the approx height I need to fit my tow hooks over the rubber push pad on the stock bumper.

Hah I know, but I needed something to do during polisci. Here is what I want to do, all the measurments in inches. I can give you the actual tow hook to measurments too. I need 4 in total but 6 would be perfect. Also, the ends dont necessarily need to be rounded but that'd be cool if they were flush with the hooks. :gigem:

Just for future reference, steel is MUCH cheaper at Custom Fabricators or Mac Bolt and Steel and they will have a much better variety to choose from so you dont have to stack thinner pieces.

thats an odd thickness. Figure out what the dimensions really need to be, export the 2d profile to a .dwg and call Cody at Hughes fab in Navasota to get it cnc cut.

Well I got this bar for about $4 so it wasn't too bad, but they only had one type of depth.

How quickly could he have this machined? I can get the actual height in a couple hours but everything else is pretty much exact to 2-3 decimal places. What's his number?

robertf03
10-11-2010, 06:01 PM
you'll have to ask him how long it would take, depends how busy they are with real work. He was quick when I had him do my bumper stuff. He was in the club, tell him what you're doing and what software you are using. I think he might have solidworks by now, if not you'll have to export to dwg and make sure there are no splines. CAM software doesn't like those.

http://navasota.shopbrazos.com/TX/manufacturing/hughes-fabrication-and-welding--94G1658955/

Its a CNC plasma, so you'll have to pick an off the shelf material thickness and it will have to be something he has in stock. Stick with multiples of 1/16" and oversize the holes 1/16" to account for misalignment and measuring accuracy.

eight
10-12-2010, 08:31 AM
You're making this way too hard. You need some sort of cutting device, a unibit, and about an hour. I assume you're using 1/2" bolts, make the holes 9/16".

I've had tow hooks on the front of my jeep for many years. Much easier to attach a strap without the stupid shackle everyone else has to have.
