View Full Version : Texas A&M Tailgate Vehicle

For a couple of years I have been tossing around the idea of getting a tailgating vehicle to go with me to all the Aggie Football games. Between Aggie Football, Dallas Cowboys, and Texas Rangers we go to quite a few sporting events. I liked the idea of getting a bus, but could never really find the one that I wanted. There are also quite a few buses already around the Tailgate scene in Aggieland. I thought about a duece and a half but wasn't really feeling it.

Well I kinda stumbled on this truck, it was in between work and home and I liked it. The wife and I got to talking about it and decided to call the guy about it. Well I went and picked it up today and I am not real sure on what I plan to do as far as build up goes but I will have it down in CS for the Nebraska game. I know there is already at least one Aggie Fire Truck so it isnt completely original but I think it will be original enough.

Besides putting beer where the water used to be, how functional will this thing be as a tailgating vehicle? A head turner for sure, but where do you put all the tailgating crap?

FJAggie07
11-04-2010, 02:27 PM
There is plenty of functionality, but yes it was mainly bought as a head turner. The storage compartments on either side provide ample room for my generator, fridge, TV, and satellite dish. The Hose storage up top provides room for coolers, chairs, tables and pop ups, and that is without removing the 750 gallon water tank under the bed.

how does it run?... not really the best looking fire truck in my opinion but I kinda get why you got it. Hope you didn't pay too much more than it is worth in scrap. Looks heavy too. How much does it weigh?

FJAggie07
11-04-2010, 04:03 PM
12,000 pounds. How much is scrap steel? :D

It has a Detroit Diesel, Allison Transmission, and Air Brakes. 31K miles and everything runs like a top. All Sirens, lights, and PA System is completely functional, just got taken out of service about 6 months ago. 750 Gallon Water Tank, Deck Gun, Pump, Dual Battery System, shore power battery maintainer system, fired everything up and it is all functioning perfect (water and pump), along with Hand throttle on the outside for the engine. It actually drives great, runs great, starts up without a hitch.

I like it, and it will be perfect for what my plan is, and yes Clarke it will have a full bar :D

since it has air brakes do you need a commercial drivers license with air brake endorsement?

This was one of my first thoughts as well. I wouldn't think it could be registered as an RV so this seems like a valid point. Still seems like a cool idea, and if you can rig the hose to do something unique it could be fun. Either way, I guess we'll see it at the game in a couple of weeks.

You should be able to register it as an RV hauler instead of a full RV and get away w/out the air brake endorsement. You will need to get a cover for the lightbar for the highway use I believe.

You will need at least one axe handle mounted on each side too. Would be cool to get two for every game and burn BTHO (whoever) on them and then put them up on a wall w/ the score and date.

So she had her first outing. I was a little nervous cause it was a long trip for her first big trip, but she did great going down. Poked along at 65 MPH never a hitch. Found out that neither fuel gauge reads real right and I don't have a good feeling yet where empty is so I fill her up every 150 miles or so. I will get out the tape measure and measure the fuel tank sometime in the next week to put a real idea on fuel capacity of the tank. It was a big hit with the kids in lot 97 as well as the children. :D On the way back up 45 she was cruising along at 70 and somehow blew a hose that ran from the block to the air compressor. No biggie, pulled over and had some help picking up a hose, changed her out and back on the way we went. No problems the rest of the way home. I chalk it up as things to be expected with a 28 year old vehicle. Some pictars:

All in all a great success, there will be a build up this offseason. It should include becoming maroon, kegs, fridge, canopy, and TV. maybe even a cook station and sink, I don't know yet.

Now this thing is getting started on it's build as of next week. It is going into a wrap shop to become maroon and add any kind of logo/decals the wife wants. I am looking for a particular logo that my google skills have escaped me in finding and was wondering if ya'll could help. It is an old Texas AMC logo, and if anyone can help throw out some good looking older A&M logos I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I honestly don't either, I was wanting to go with gray that I have used in the Logo, but the wife wanted white, and as she is the other half ownership of this vehicle/project, AND she doesn't fight clean, she won out and is very happy with the white wheels. I will keep working on her, maybe do the outside edge in gray, or maroon. I am still thinking of an agreeable solution.

I will post more pics this weekend, the speakers are all being run off of a 2 zone Marine head unit in the cab that is going to two amps to run the two zones. I have 4 exterior speakers for the outside zone (two visible above) and 2 speakers and a sub on the inside zone. I also have a wired remote for the head unit installed under the right rear turn signal that allows me to control the volume, select songs etc from the outside back of the Fire Truck so that the stereo can be adjusted while cooking or playing beer pong :D

Well interesting couple of weeks to say the least. Took it down for the SMU game and after replacing batteries and battery cable ends I was still having a rough time starting the truck. Ended up getting a parking ticket and my canopy getting destroyed. Overall it was a FAIL of a weekend. On my way out of town I decided that I didn't want to spend the next two weeks trying to chase down electrical gremlins that I had neither the time, patience, experience, or training to deal with. So I saw a billboard for the Freightliner dealer, exited at a rapid pace, dropped the bitch off and said call me when it's done. I then drove back to Dallas in Air Conditioning and comfort.

Fast forward to last week, dealer calls me, figures out that it is not the starter solenoid that is out but my two ignition button's solenoids. They replaced those, and now it starts first time every time like it never has before. This makes Chris happy. I picked it up Saturday Morning and we took it out to Tailgate. Got the flags a flyin, the stereo a blastin, and suddenly Jim Knox from Fox Sports Southwest walks up to me and asks if I was the owner of the firetruck. My response, "Are you Jim Knox?". Anyways they asked if they could shoot a little footage for a show called "Gameday Rivals", I said sure why not. It was a good time. We didn't have a huge crowd for the Idaho game, no smoker and no canopy, but we had a good time and got nice and toasty so life was good. Coleman stopped by and it is ALWAYS good to see the resident Joo. I hope everyone can at one point stop by the tailgate this season. We will be having a big time from here on out as I think we have the kinks worked out enough that I can start bringing the smoker down and can start setting up in a profeshi-oh-nal way.
