What about a trip out there on February 26-27. It is one of their open weekends. I would really like to try a new place. I like K2, but we will be back there for TCC, so why not try something different.

Thoughts?

i am down for a feb. run but can only go the weekend of the 20th

Could be in, looks like the folks from trees went there. How primitive is there camping?

JB
12-27-2010, 12:16 PM
Maybe an officer could shoot them an email to get some more info. Site says $50 per rig/wknd. Maybe if we could promise 6-8 rigs on a set weekend, we could get that knocked down a little bit. Let them know that we met/drank with them at K2 last year and that we have been wanting to check out their park.

I think that 2 good 'big' runs this semester would be great, with the second of course being TCC. Toss a couple Alto or Gilmer runs in there and call it good.

I haven't been to K2 yet and plan on going opening weekend Feb. 5th-6th. I would like to check out Canyons as well. I'm down for both...

That was my first thought, but then I thought maybe he took the suburban up there to sell to some Mexican on his street corner, which is probably a good idea. :D

Still trying to sell the suburban, and it is still presentable enough to park in an apartment parking lot. Can't do much with pigpen without a trailer anyway.

email response:

John,

We're glad ya'll are coming out to Canyons. We will open the gates usually by 1-2 pm on Friday. We don't allow any atv's or dirt bikes as of now, it's possible we might in the future but not now. As far as a trail guide you don't need one as long as you are with another rig. You might want to bring a chain saw, bc sometimes the wind will blow a tree into the trail. You also dont have to stay on the trails, feel free to try an obstacle if you see one you want to try. As far as open fires go ... i think you will be fine with building one as long as its in a fire ring (we have plenty of rocks to build them) also you won't need to bring firewood - just a chainsaw - we have plenty to dead trees to burn.

Feel free to ask any other questions as they arise - email or call.

What a great, easy, little trip. I was the first one to arrive and met Josh Rhode, an Aggie, who with his partner, Holland, run Canyons. It is about 15 miles north of Fredericksburg, and about 30-45 min from K2. Weather was perfect, but it got very windy and it stayed that way most of the weekend.

Chris and Amanda showed up with a brightass red longass box trailer that housed their buggy. Very nice setep. They wouldn't let us night run, so we sat around the fire. They ended up having 50 rigs or so, most being from JeepNation, a group of mostly JKs. There were also 5-6 race-type buggies. Jeremiah and Tate showed up in the morning and we headed out. It takes awhile to get your bearings out there because everything looks the same. They really need a trail map. It reminded me alot of Clayton, but way easier. Plenty of shallow mud and water and you were basically wheeling in the valleys/creek beds. For the stocker rigs, I really think this place would be a blast. A great alternative to K2 if you live in Austin/SA area.

I headed out this morning and was back around 11. Got pulled over AGAIN. This truck is a magnet for some reason. Said it looked too heavy, I said "Naw, its good". He said "here is your warning for speeding" Just saw the 55 sign and was coasting down from 70. Lame, but at least its not a ticket.
