I am a step away from buying a 1991 4runner over here in NZ.
It has the 3.0 V-6 and the auto trans, 150K, 4 door, white, IFS.
-The good:
-CHEAP!
-working 4wd
-new plugs, pitman arm, all steering linkages
-all terrain tires
-seller works at the local auto parts store, says he will give deals on cheap parts if/when something goes wrong, as well as providing tools and garage to fix it. Fellow 4x4 enthusiast who wants to do some trails together. Seems real stand up.

-The bad:
-runs kinda rich, owner thinks he got the mass air wet
-Trans slip some in rev
-rust in bottom of front doors, not bad, just paint bubbling

Price: $2k NZ= about $1500 US

I think I'm gonna jump on it. What problems do these have. I heard rust is a real issue with the frames. I looked and poked around, saw nothing. Tell me anything you guys might know about this gen. 4 runner.
Thanks Guys!

3.slow motor likes to blow out the headgasket. There was a recall over here in the states that took care of that but I dunno about down there in Kuala land.

how much longer are you going to be over there?

Just buy it if you have the means. You're blowing money anyway, when are you going to be in the land of Crocodile Dundee again after this? How many awesome adventures could you have with this truck? Unless you can find something awesome that you can't get here, so you can brag about it when you get back for the same price, (compact truck diesel, weird compact quad cab, etc.) pull the trigger and take lots of pictures/videos.

Good to know about the head gasket.

Anyone have any ideas about it running rich"? I assume since it is 91 and FI that it has a diagnostic port for tripped codes?

I will be in NZ for 6 months more.

Rented a small compact car a few days ago, on the cheap, to go up to the Kapiti coast to spot some blue penguins and seal colony. Got all the way there to find out that it was a 20k two track road going down to the water. Had to pack everything in, which sucked. Really wish I had had this 4 runner at the time. That is the main reason for a 4wd. EVERYTHING besides state highways require 4wd to get to. So yes, lots of great weekends could start because of a 4wd.

I agree Flem, I would love to get something cool. Find me something for around $2k US and in the Wellington area and I will go for it. I'm gonna move some funds around and talk to the guy a little more before making a final decision.

just get it and drive it - sell in six months... don't fix anything, it can run rich forever (mine did)

...and you can see where that got him. But more than 6 months is all that counts. :D

A '92 was my original off-road vehicle.

Anybody know anything about Mazda Proceed Marvie 1993? From some google searches it appears to be a re-badged Ford Raider?
