Picked up a cheap 4wd.
It is a 1993 Mazda Proceed Marvie, all stock.
It seems like a nice little toy. Anyone know anything about these? From my understanding they are the Mazda b-series running gear and frame with a different body.

Picked it up yesterday and the first trip out was today. Took it to Red-Rocks trail. Got stuck once but a 5 min dig out and some wood and we were good to go. Pics.

I know nothing about this thing or any mazdas for that matter. If you want to know about the axles then I can snap a pic later. BTW they are 6 lug (are they toy axles?) Got some more pics of the trail today and the mazda. Post them up later.

Why is there a side mirror glued to the front fender?

Guess they figured they had to do something with it when they installed those mini WestCoast mirrors on there....

That's some beautiful country, would love to take a visit one day.

That goofy mirror is required over here for any vehicle longer than a certain meter length (don't know the exact number). I do agree it is stupid though.

No one here knows about Mazdas?

I went to the part store yesterday to find out that it is basically a 2.6L Ford Bravo/Courier. Interesting, I will have to research it a bit.

Name the axles.
The front has a strange vacuum disconnect which is called the "remote free wheel mode". I am having some problems with it. It is supposed to changed to locked when in 4wd, but it only sometimes is engaging for me. Any ideas, I heard the solenoids can go bad.

As promised:
A few going up "Hells Gate", a very intimidating name for a tame obstacle.
And getting stuck, 5 mins digging out and some wood and we were good.

Make sure the vacuum lines are good. My grandpa had the same problem, turned out one of the vacuum lines was leaking.

Is that a 9" in the rear? The front confuses me, Ford did not have something like this until much later.

If I remember reading Chadnutz's ramblings, the rear is a Mazda axle that shares a similar design to a Toyota rear end. Nothing is the same though, which is why he was working on a Toyota axle swap. Lockers for the Mazda axle were either non-existent or really expensive. Front is going to be some chinese conglomeration just like the rear.

Good luck with the vacuum problem, hopefully it's just a leak.

Japanese conglomeration:flipoff2:

Turns out that I was in 2ws that whole trip. Apparently the front has two piece shafts which are locked by that vacuum actuator. It also turns out that although the t-case was in 4wd and the front shaft and r/p was spinning the wheels were not receiving power because of the remote free wheel mode not actuating.

It is working flawlessly now. It is weird. If I shift into 4wd in any gear but neutral the t-case will shift fine but the remote free wheel mode will not actuate. However, when I shift into 4wd from neutral the switch and the vacuum solenoids work just fine. Went back out to red rocks trail and played around some more yesterday with a noticeable improvement in traction/pulling power.
So, all good to go. Thanks for the info on the axles guys.

Pics of track conditions by White Rock at the most Southern tip of the North Island. There were some portions of exposed volcanic rock that were very challenging but of course, no pictures of that so apparently it didn't happen.:gigem: I will try to get more pictures of actual offroading thr next trip out.

I need to change the front brake pads on this thing in order to pass inspection.
Of course I have changed lots of brake pads on non ABS vehicles and I changed them on my 2001 F-150 which had ABS and I did nothing different. I just unbolted the caliper, popped the old pads off, depressed the piston with a c-clamp, replaced the pads, bolted the caliper and was good to go.

But then I got thinking, do I have to do anything different for vehicles with ABS? The mazda has it and I can't afford to **** something up. Anything different required for ABS?

mudtoy67

With ABS you're supposed to crack the bleeder before squeezing the piston in. Let the brake fluid out of the caliper instead of forcing it backward through the system.

Does it mess up the ABS system by pushing fluid back through it.
So just crack the bleeder screw and push the piston back (probably by hand since the pressure will be released). Then top off the master after I am done. Do you have to bleed the system after? I wouldn't think so.

I'm on the North Island, Christchurch is on the South. No impact here, but that area is pretty fooked up. Apparently not as strong as the 7.1 that hit it back in Sep. but about 1/4 the depth of the last one. Having it so much shallower I guess did a lot more damage. It's all over the TV. I won't be able to watch anything else for at least a week.

Nope, They didn't make the Tacoma before 95.5, what you are thinking of is an old Toyota Truck, commonly referred to as the Hilux.
