View Full Version : Planning a Big trip during the school year

Since there seems to be a lot of interest in getting another big trip somewhere, besides TCC and Clayton, during the school year I would like to get the ball rolling

Some Ideas I've heard:

King of the Hammers
good: spend a week watching one of the most exciting ultra 4x4 races of the year
bad: second week of February

Baja 1000
good: weekend before Thanksgiving
bad: still missing a lot of school

what are some other big events/race that we could participate/wheel in?

I would like to see another organized Colorado trip, maybe a Moab trip, possibly a Rubicon trip?

It all sounds great, but I think it would be difficult to get students to do a weeklong trip, unless we go back to doing the Spring Break trip like the older TAMORites.

This might be worth checking out:

I dig all of these ideas, but also agree with the second part.

My vote is to revive the Spring Break trip.

Do the Spring Break trips - That's what we always did, works great!

I say you should throw a poll on this to get the best idea of what everyone wants to do. I vote spring break to 1. Colorado, 2. Moab, 3. Rubicon, with preference in that order.

wouldn't snow prevent most good wheeling in Colorado?

Yes, even now most of the trails up in the mountains are blocked. You have to go in august. I'd say about 1/3 of the good trails are open and they are most of those are on rampart range and gold camp road. If we do go to colorado and do those two, then we might be able to stay at my parents rental house in the springs.

Hell, The ski slopes are still open on spring break.

Very true... I would have to go with Moab then if Colorado was out of the question.

I think a local(texas) trip would be easier for the new members though. Either way im in.

Keep in mind that college students are normally broke. Less miles the better. Maybe hit something in west Texas then head to Las Cruces. Did Trees ranch reopen somewhere? That would be a good start. Or maybe the new TMTC place. After a few days in Las cruces you could head to northern New Mexico. I know there's wheeling up there but you might run into the same snow problems like Colorado.

We've done:
Moab (1998 or 1999 - I didn't go)
Las Cruces (2000? when Tate rolled his Bronco)
Moab (2001? when I brought my bike, didn't get rig done in time)

Tellico (2002)

Las Cruces / AZ (2003)
http://offroadrepublic.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=22905&g2_page=2

2004 I got married, so no one organized a trip...

SW CO - Avalanche Ranch, Ouray trails, Moab (2005, after graduation)
http://offroadrepublic.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=30714

SE CO - Blanca Peak, sand dunes, Independance, Carnage (2006)
http://offroadrepublic.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=43329

2007, our first kid, no one organized a trip
Big Bend and Las Cruces (2008)
Trees Ranch / Las Cruces / AZ (2009)
2010 second kid, no annual trip
2011 - just got back from CO.

I don't reccomend staying in one place the whole time. Schedule a day of wheeling someplace on the way. Also schedule a relaxing day where the SO's can shop and check out a cool town. We've done stuff like that in Sedona or the Saguaro desert in Tuscon, etc...

Also, save the hardest trails for the last day, do scenic trails the first part of the week and save the ones that break stuff for the last day.

also - it takes MUCH too long to drive to CA in a week, it just eats up too much fun time.

Blankenship posted a place in the comprehensive list. This looks like it could be a good start to a trip

Longhorn and then Las Cruces would be a good trip

Longhorn and then Las Cruces would be a good trip

This is what I was thinking.
From College Station to Longhorn Ranch it is about 10 and a half hours, 590 miles
From Longhorn to Las cruces, it is around 6 hours, 350 miles
Then from las cruces to College station it is about a 12 and a half hour drive, or 720 miles

So all in all it is around a 1700 mile round trip or 30 hours of driving

this is all according to google maps

Moab wasn't too bad, 16 hrs from my house in Arlington. California is another 10 on top of that.

I am game for heading east as well though.

I'd be up for a Colorado trip that involved wheelin and 2 days of skiing. Give the GF's somethin to smile about

...wheelin and 2 days of skiing...

I'm not sure if those seasons overlap. It would work in Tahoe, but does CO have anything that high up where you can still ski in the summer when the trails are thawed out?

During spring break all of the big places are still open. Arapahoe basin is normally open into the early summer.
