I don't think we have a thread dedicated to tires and I thought it could be useful to have all tire talk in one centralized place.

I need new tires for my duramax. I have BFG Rugged Terrains T/As on it now and have not had the truck long enough to have any real opinion on them. I'm looking at tires under $300 each and I have come up with 4 types that I know nothing personally about. It is a street truck only and doesn't see many (if any) dirt or gravel roads. Listed from cheapest to most expensive.

General Grabber HTS - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Grabber+HTS&partnum=765SR0GRHTSOWL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

Continental Cross Contact LX - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Continental&tireModel=CrossContact+LX&partnum=765SR0CCLXOWL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

BFG Rugged Terrain T/A - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=Rugged+Terrain+T%2FA&partnum=765R0RTTAOWL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

Nitto Terra Grappler - http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/findTireDetail.do?tc=NITVH1&c=1&rcz=75229&pc=40330&ar=65&rf=true&cf=false&rd=20&sw=false&rc=TDNINT&cs=275

The total price difference is only about $200; so price is not that great of a factor but I don't want to regret the purchase. Internet searches only get you so far b/c the internet is full of both positive and negative reviews of all 4 options.

Anyone have any experience with any of these? I'm leaning towards the first two b/c I really think the more aggressive tread of the latter is just over-kill for my application. What would you buy?

Terra Grapplers suck and won't last you very long

I wouldn't recommend any of those tires

I suggest these:

Don't forget Michelin. I got 96,000 miles out of my set of Michelin LTX A/S. I picked up a set of Michelin LTX M/S 2 to replace them. Slightly more aggressive tread and should last 70k.

edit: I see the problem, Michelin doesn't have either of those in a 20 with that load range. Yet another loss for big gay wheels. :flipoff2:

Everyone talks bad about terra grapplers, but all of my friends have gotten over 40,000 HARD miles out of them. I also have friends that have had great success out of some of the more aggressive cooper tires.

Due to your 100 + yard long burnout leaving my driveway on the way to Alto, I dont think the tires are the issue here.

I have nitto terra grapplers on my work truck. 97 chevy 2500 4x4. They have about 40k on them now and still have some life left, but not a ton. Miles were largely in town, prob 80-90 percent, along with plenty of jobsite mud/gravel/dirt. Also prob had a 4000 lb tailer 20 percent of those miles, and an 8k load ten percent.

FWIW.

It was time for new tires on my wife's xterra so I went ahead and ordered some treadwrights. They shipped fast and craftsmanship appears good. $492. I've heard alot of bad things about coopers. Someone who I know who is a cooper dealer (I won't say who) said that even he would never buy them.

I'm really a fan of the toyo m/t's. They're really quiet, especially for being mud terrains, and they're tough as nails. I've had to drive on them flat two times now and they haven't complained.

Plus, Robby Gordon uses them on his dakar truck uncut.

Travis has seemed to have good luck with the general grabbers too.

Not a fan of coopers. Had them on my crewcab and destroyed a set in a near-accident on the way to Alto. Had other problems I don't recall offhand and switched toa less aggressive firestone. Much happier with them.

I am looking for a new set of tires for the jeep in the 42" size. What is popular now? TSLs are always good. IROKs are kinda so so now I understand. What are the reviews on the pitbull rockers? What else is out there in that size? Claws? Now Krawlers but just in 20" rims and $$$. Just looking for opinions. Won't be ordering these until summer time likely. Just thinking ahead.

Kid? Bitch I am your age. shiiiiiiiiiit. :flipoff2:

No I ran the Radial Pitbulls in 37" variety and absolutely loved them. They went when I sold the Tacoma but If I ever do a dual purpose rig again they will be the first tire I go to. Slightly heavy but not as heavy as Toyo's and they bent, wrapped, and gripped very well. The big lugs clean out well, and the side lugs offer good protection. Didn't chunk either.

Now also in the 42" flavor in a 17" Rim are the Goodyear MTR Stickies, which if I build a one ton rig soon will be what I use. I think they are sexy. :D

Toyo A/Ts

BFG A/Ts

Cooper STTs (more of a mud)

Goodyear Duratracs

Had BFGs on everything, but never on a heavy truck. Wouldn't mind changing it up. Must be able to buy at Discount Tire

Looking at 35x12.50x18 or 285/75/18(35x11.5) or maybe 325/65/18(34.75ishx13)

The cooper stt is the sister to the toyo mt's. Toyo mt's are proven and great, I suggest those. I absolutely do not refinement bfgs on a heavier truck.

JB
06-25-2012, 01:59 PM
The BFG AT only comes in a 325/65/18. It is $360/tire. Not ruled it out, just not exactly the size I wanted.

JB
06-25-2012, 02:04 PM
I just do not need a MT on this truck since I have the 04.

But for reference;
Toyo MTs 285/75/18 - $384 @ 4WPW
Toyo MTs 35x12.5 - $369 @ 4WPW
Toyo ATs 285/75/18 - $308 @ 4WPW

Discount does not show Toyo on their website for Texas. But when you go in, they can order them next day. Prices are not great. They just want you to buy Nittos or BFGs.

Will getting an MT sacrifice ride quality? Are these for the tow rig? Is a 35" tire going up in size from stock (obviously) or does it already have a 35" tire on there? Are you planning on pulling any Gooseneck's? Just immediate thoughts on tire selection for me.

And Also I assume these are all good tires. I have only ever run the BFG AT's but I am definitely planning on straying for my next tire. Stay away from the Goodyear MT/R's with Kevlar for a heavy vehicle (I know you don't have it listed, just hoping you stay that way).

JB
06-25-2012, 02:32 PM
Stock size is 275/70/18, which is equivalent to 33.2x10.2

But I am not lame, and 35s look perfect. Could probably even go bigger. Not even thinking about any sort of leveling gayness.

Its an 8000lb truck with solid axles and 65psi in the tires. Ride quality can not get much worse:D

Gooseneck issues are not issues with such a mild increase in tire size.

I read through the tow rig tire thread on Pirate. Weird how there are so many dislikes on the BFGs as I have ZERO complaints on my past 1/2tons. 50k out of the ATs and MTs

Looked like if I stick with my Michelins, I could get stupid mileage

Lots of love for the Toyo ATs.

I like my BFG's I seem to get good life out of them if I run them at a lower pressure on an everyday bases. I didn't like the Michelin's at all, they were too hard and gave me poor traction on paved road at recommended pressure. I only got about 28k out of the set of Michelin M/S 2's

I have been running 35" BFG A/T's on my dodge for 5 years now and won't change. I've put thousands of miles on them between towing the jeep and chevelle on wheeling/racing trips, even pulled our gooseneck horsetrailer on numerous occasions. It had nitto a/t's when I bought it in 2006 and they sucked.

My dad had 35" Cepek FC II's on his duramax, after 2 sets I talked him into going with the 35" BFG A/T's. Made hime a believer in the BFG's.

285/75/18 Toyo AT2 (34.8x11.3)

OR

295/70/18 Nitto Terra (34.4x11.8)

Size diff. is not important. Stock size is 33.2x11.

$315 vs $262

Never been a big fan of anything Nitto, but have not heard the bad things about them that I use to. If price was closer, I wouldn't hesitate on going with the Toyos, but $53 more a tire is alot

BFG doesn't make anything in the right size.

Looking for new tires for the dd.

Right now I have bfg all terrains. Suck in the rain but they're solid tires. Rear tires are completely bald, fronts still have 25%.

Options

1. Buy 2 new bfg all-terrains for now, 2 later. Light on the wallet

2. Buy 4 of

-Toyo open country ATII's
-Bridgestone dueler At's

One thing I ran into on the toyo's is that there are 2 different prices, I assume one is U.S made, the other is chinese?

JB, where were yours made?

KrazyKarl02

You won't buy them, but michelins suck off road, but drive straight as a train on road. I'm very cheap, and on the death 250 and my duramax I run michelins. I think I am on my 3rd set, everyone has clocked over 70k miles with very little maintenance. You have a bronco if you want to off road bro'

Michelins. Worth every penny. 99,700 miles on Michelin LTX a/s that came with the truck. 75,000 on Michelin LTX m/s2 so far (they're getting close though).

The m/s2 have done fine in casual "offroad" situations a typical tow rig would run into. Only problem I've had was trying to make a u-turn on the side of a hill in the muddy parking area at DSO...however, it really was slicker than greased owl karl out there.

The michelins on my truck are ok at the deer lease, but when you see a mud spot or whatever and you think, can I make it? With michelins, turn around. With bfg's or nittos, hammer down!

That being said, that situation happens to me once a year, and it never happens when I have to get thru there and there is no other way.

I had the falkens on my old truck, they were awesome. They were quiet, did well on the highway and I only got stuck once with that truck. They weren't very good on traction but maybe that was just my Legendary 7.3 up front. :flipoff2:

I had michelins on the suburban for a while and I honestly believe you won't find a better highway tire, but we switched away because of traction issues on boat ramps.

Decide if you're going to sell your truck before you spend a grand on good tires. If you're going to sell it, buy some craigslist tires.

Toyo's or BFGs, both great tires. Plenty of life out of the 4+ sets of BFGs I have run. Almost 50k on my Toyo AT2s now. Going to try and get to 60-70k. No tire I have ever had is super awesome in the rain. But I drive a truck, and do not try and grade tires on rain performance.

Michelins would be my choice for a 2wd and a plan to keeo the truck for awhile

Tommy for cereal. These, new headlights, and getting rid of your mexican unibrow would do wonders for your truck.

Isn't the offset different? I see alot of 99-04s running around SA with 05+ wheels and they look goofy.

Sparling
05-14-2014, 08:25 PM
Yeah. Nothing wheel spacers wouldn't fix.

JB

Or buy they right wheels. 99-04 lariat wheels would look great Tommy

Sparling

Why buy new wheels and stay with 16s?

JB
05-14-2014, 11:13 PM
What ?

JB
05-14-2014, 11:16 PM
So you want to spend $100-200 on ghetto wheel spacers instead of finding nicer, year appropriate, lariat wheels with proper backspacing? Confused.

Sparling
05-14-2014, 11:37 PM
Spacers aren't ghetto unless you use ****ty parts. Ford used them from the factory on DRW trucks, and they are even over 5" spacers. 2" spacers are fine, especially on a truck like Tommy's. Not everyone thinks the old 16" wheels are nicer. A lot of people think that a slightly larger wheel looks better and you have better tire options as well on a 17 vs a 16. It would also make sense to use newer wheels if Tommy did an 05 conversion.

Just got 60k out of a set of Toyo A/T 2s. They were not to the wear bars, but pretty close. Alot of highway, towing, stop and go, offroad, driving like an asshole. These were my first set of Toyos and they were a great all around tire.

I went with a set of Cooper S/T Maxxs this time as the Toyos were a week out for some reason. They are a little bit more aggressive than the Toyo A/T 2s. I have only had them for about 1000 miles, but with this recent RARE rain in SA, they are noticable better on wet pavement than the Toyos :flipoff2: They were also a couple of hundrded cheaper. Not sure I will get the mileage I got out of the Toyos, but we'll see. Size is 295/70/18.

Jeremiah just got a 13 F350 and put similiar sized Nitto ATs on. We drive the same and pull the same trailers, so we can see which ones last the longest.

New KO2s come out soon. I have always run BFGs. Great tires, but they did not have a size I wanted in 18"

My Nittos didn't last. I dropped down to a small tire again because I wanted BFGs again. I really like the KO2s. I wanted to wait on them to come out but that didn't work out so well for me.

Any feedback on the new michelins? I have long been an advocate of the ltx and logged 80 to 100k on several sets as have others. A few years back they renamed them to ms2's or some crap and I have heard from 2 people they only got 50 to 60 k out of them?

ms2's have been around since the late 90s?

I've got the ltx ms2's. Have about 91,000 miles on them...getting pretty close to the wear bars but not quite.

My mickey thompson's on my duramax finally gave up the ghost, so it is time to order new tires. I really like Toyo's, they have a new tread design out called the R/T. Same specs as the M/T, they use the same compounds and everything, just a slightly different tread pattern. Has anyone heard anything about them? I cant decide in between them or the A/T 2s.

I heard they are supposed to fit between the All terrain and mud terrain tires. More aggressive then A/T, less than M/T

The r/t is a 33-12.50 and the a/t is a 295/75r18 which measures 34.3-11.8. They are the same price.

I have 45k on my Nitto TerraGrapplers and probably have another 5k left before I am going to need to retread. They have lasted better than anything else I have had (even the 19.5's on the old red truck) and I haul all the time for work and keep a 100 gallon nurse tank full too.

The thing about Goodyear mtr's is they suck in the mud, but they are equally ****ty on rocks in my opinion. I owned a set of 37's. I guess it's an ok street tire, but for Offroad I was not impressed. They are harder than the gates of hell, so mileage should be good.

breckboarder55
07-09-2015, 11:12 PM
I cross shopped them with BFG KM2s. Iirc the MT/R has a stiffer sidewall, not quite as good in the rocks. They were a bit heavier than a similar sized BFG as well.

Most TJ/LJ folks seemed to love the MT/R.

Ended up with 53k on them before I put a new set on. They are now the "G2" version. Discount has them now with a 50k mile warranty. I really like them. I'm having trouble balancing this set, but pretty sure it's because there's mud on the rims. Taking it back today to get them redone again before we head to Dirty D-town tonight.

The only issue i have had out of new set is getting tires to balance. There was mud in the rims, and once that was cleaned out, they ride like a dream. I had to explain to the discount guys how balancing a tire with mud on the rim was assinine (boy did I feel like I was channeling my grandfather). Mind you, they were not caked with 20 lbs of alto mud, more like sludge from my gravel road that had been building up in all the wet weather.
