Yes, Yes, I love this plan! I always wonder why people do not build more of these. I am sure you have figured it out, but the 302 will fit in those, the 352, not so much!
The won ton swap, you going to do leaf springs?

Can't do I'll either have it done before the spring semester or never. I figure I need about 200 hours and I already have 90% of the parts, so it's not impossible just highly unlikely.
Also it is no-where close to wheeling as-is

I would do the exact opposite, front leaf, rear expensive springs. Wait, who am I kidding, I would put leaf springs and a van body on it...

Does anybody know much about the old 302's? I have that 302 in Nick's old bronco I think I want to build up but have very little information about it.
I think it is from the early 70's and I'm pretty sure in 74-75 is when they dumped the compression ratio and went to unleaded gas? Also I think the firing order is different in the older engines?
What i'm shooting for is an EFI 302 with the best bang-for-the-buck as far as power goes, either build the one I have or swap in one from a mustang.
nickas
12-21-2011, 03:19 PM
There are a lot of options for a 302... Mustang/racing forums have a lot of ideas on how to get a ton of HP out of one. Before i did the axle swap, that 302 had plenty power with 35's. My plan was to put 351 heads, different intake, and bigger carb because it would fit and i had the extra parts. I just cant rmemeber all the details.
If i remember right, that 302 had the same firing order as our 83 ford. Those plug wires are still riding around in my car, and i found the dash to that eb last weekend, ill bring it by one day too.
Sparling
12-21-2011, 03:51 PM
Firing order changed when they started calling it the 5.0. Mustang mass air or speed density from a truck should be pretty easy to make work. If you want the new firing order I think a cam change is all that's needed. The trucks are batch fire so you can just leave the injector wiring as is and use the old firing order. Not sure on mass air, but it's probably batch fire too.if you want to do anything but stick truck stuff I'd go with mass air.
BroncoJo
12-21-2011, 04:27 PM
going to go with a mustang mass air, and I think they were not batch fire but I need to check on that

it is a '74. i think the sticker is still on the driver striker post has a 74 manufacture date. i sure thought it was a 302 because the old man i bought it from said it was a 302, i never got into it that deep. i just put a carb kit in, ran it a couple weeks to make sure everything worked, then started on the axles. what do you think it is??

I would focus the most on a "running" engine, then gearing. We don't need much power and engines can be a $$$ suck that can come back to later if it just HAS to have something beyond stock.
Looks like a fun project.

as always I've been busy... New plan:
Tie cage to frame
Tie seats to cage

Beat the piss out of it.

I've got some 33x15.5 swamper sx's you can have. They're a little dry and not a lot of tread, but if you put them on 8" wheels you can run 0 psi.:gigem:
And there's nothing wrong with a boat tank as long as you secure it with galvanized hanging strap. :D

For the gas tank, get a stock tank and figure out how to mount it so it wont get FUBAR'd. This way you will have a gauge and it will help avoid Karling out on the trail. Also less likely to leak. Also cheap.

so there was a video on here with a running 302, what happened to that? you're keeping the sthuper awesome v6 im assuming?
dana 30's suck if you want to run anything bigger than 33's and actually do anything with it. I bet you could find a full width 44/ 8.8 or 9 inch that would go great in that thing, until then you should wheel the piss out of it until it falls apart :gigem:
what did the 5 speed come out of, because I'm pretty sure they only offered a 4 speed on an 84, they didnt go to 5 speeds until 85.

Sounds like a good plan, I would be a little afraid of welding the front. If you need driveshaft pieces let me know.
I've got a d44 front that could make its way to that thing.
eight
01-17-2012, 09:28 AM
Yea, welding the front would be hard on axles, and hard on steering. I ran welded front for years and broke plenty of d44 shafts and joints with 35s and 36s. You can steer with it, if you run wheels with enough backspace. The 30 can hold up with 35s locked if you put the shafts with the big joints in it, not sure what you've got, TJs and XJs came with the big joints.
BroncoJo
01-17-2012, 09:33 AM

1. Build Track bar Comes with rod-ends and brackets
2. Drive shafts One is already made
3. Fuel cell or something of that nature Already has one
4. Tie cage to frame And seats to cage
5. weld front and rear no
6. those old 36 inch TSLs no 33's at the most

A 44 is not really much any stronger than the TJ d30. Back in the day we ran very hard trails with TJs on 35s and had little front axle breakage. I imagine this thing would work the same. Just put an explorer 8.8 in it, bonus is that it just bolts in. Costs about $60 for the stupid driveshaft flange adapter thing. Axles still available for $100 and under. If you're lucky the d30 came from a 4 cylinder and has 4.10 gears.

I have a flat tow tow bar he can have. He just needs to weld up two points on the front of spooky to attach it to. Nobody wants the damn thing and I am tired of moving it out of the way in my garage.

You also need decent tires for flat towing

Yeah, not sure BDRs 15.50s would last long flat towing

You don't need a car hauler to tow it. Polaris rangers weigh more than spooby.

Step 1-Buy the 8.8
Step 2-Slap that bitch in Spooby
Step 3-Stop being a puss and wheel
