No cracks, the lift kit is virtually brand new.

I think I'm going to un-shackle flip this thing, use the leafs from my old bronco, with the goal of getting the rear down 1-2 inches (making it level).

Are they 1050 or 1250? 1050's might work but 1250's will rub everywhere (fenders bumper radius arm etc).

BroncoJo

I need to get it driving good first, I figure going back to stock would be easy, simple and be a better starting point. Also the tires rub like crazy as it is.

Too much work... Just leave it as is

Do you have any idea what you're talking about? That would take about 2 hours of work and 4 hours of drinking beer..

I could adjust the steering stops, or just not turn the wheel as much (which I prefer). There will be virtually no difference in rubbing between lift and stock

JB
02-24-2012, 03:37 PM
You lost me. So lower so you don't have to buy tires?

TdmayfieldIV
02-24-2012, 04:18 PM
Step 1.
Sell wheels and tires for $600 to that guy

Step 2.
Sell lift for $600

Step 3.
Send beams to get cut and turned with the money you made from selling the lift

Step 4.
buy 17" methods with the money from the rims

Step 5.
Deaver coils and bilstein 5100's

Step 6.
Put my 37" toyos on said 17" rims

Step 7.
Go forth and broody

You have people interested in both the lift and wheels right now. Sell them.
You have the tires already, so the only thing you'll have to buy is the springs and shocks.

BroncoJo
02-24-2012, 04:54 PM
Tommy I hope you didn't waste much time on that responce. Neither 1 or 2 have panned out and I do.t have money for 3, 4 and 5. I'm talking about going back to stock for now, while I have 33s, to work on getting a better ride. I plan on driving, not trailering to the trails.

6" lift isn't really that much too much for a bronco on 33s. Pull the add a leafs out of the rear to get it about level, then drive it a while and the front will sag. These things didn't drive that great when they were new.

Sparling
02-24-2012, 10:17 PM
I think you need new steering (either new tie rods/ends or swingset with good heims/joints, and maybe a gear box), and an alignment before you do anything else.

BroncoJo
02-24-2012, 10:27 PM
****, I guess ill keep the lift on. If I did go back to stock I could build the swing set steering...

KrazyKarl02
02-24-2012, 10:40 PM
My Bronco had a 3" lift and I ran 33X12.50's. I had to cut the edge off the bumper because it rubbed, other than that it did not rub. The Klogger in TTB form, which essentially the front is a bronco ran 37's with a 6" lift with no issue.

Also my Bronco was actually somewhat "nice", like I had balanced tires and did regular alignments and it drove like a giant piece of ****. Even before the lift with 31's it sucked. I mean you could keep it on the highway, but like it would not do a straight line so well.....

You can see the bumper trimming here...

Here is a "full retard" version of a bronco

And while we are digging up old ****

Sparling
02-24-2012, 10:42 PM
I don't see that as an issue, if you need to go back to stock, then do it. Just decide if you really want swingset steering so you don't waste money on stock replacement parts.

KrazyKarl02
02-25-2012, 12:28 AM
Are you planning on keeping the TTB?

Why the **** is that even a question? It's TTB, the best axle ever if left unlocked.

Hot Pocket
02-25-2012, 12:30 AM
I've heard lots of people complain about poor flex and rubbing tires while running a lifted TTB setup, just like Travis is right now. And just because the Klogger had some magical TTB system that somehow made it through hell and back does not mean it is the best axle ever... everyone knows the Dana 30 is where it's at! If you don't believe me, ask one of those Jeepers in the mexican food/ land rover jumping thread.

Sparling
02-25-2012, 01:12 AM
Hotpocket, would my suburban get crazy flex if I just put lift brackets to drop everything down? As long as you don't have a leaf spring ttb setup there's nothing wrong with ttb. I've seen rigs with ttb get 20+ inches of travel. Cut and turned ttb with good coilovers and longer radius arms would surprise the crap out of you.

Travis, FOA is making coilovers again if you find yourself wanting some.

TdmayfieldIV
02-25-2012, 01:29 AM
Broncos drove like **** from the factory from what I understand. I've never driven one that wasn't all over the road.

That ttb lift is ****, better than some I've seen but it's still a drop bracket lift. He's not really tearing into it, just fixing it. Everything on there now sucks, coils, drop brackets, white body shocks, nothing on there now will be in the final product so why keep it? It's doing nothing but making it more mall crawler-ish now.

Hot Pocket
02-25-2012, 01:50 AM
What I'm trying to say here is that obviously Travis has a bronco with a ****ty TTB lift or else he would not being experiencing those problems... sure, you can dump money into custom radius arms and all kinds of other fancy TTB garbage, but it isnt as easy to come by as 44 or even 60 parts.

Knowing travis, he isnt going to spend that kind of coin and can achieve much better results and be much happier with the truck in the long run if he just threw in a 79 44 and called it a day. TTB bronco stuff just doesnt come by as cheaply as making a good quality solid axle system work. That's why I asked. If he wants to build a TTB system, I'd love to see it.

BroncoJo

I guess my biggest input would be to get rid of the drop brackets one way or another. They wreaked havoc on my F150 frame. I am torn on whether building a TTB or SAS is the way to go, depends on what you want to do with it I suppose. I have a bunch of extra
D44 SAS stuff if you decide to go that route.

JB
02-25-2012, 10:58 AM
Ive owned 2 and would not say they drove like ****. My 86 with 4" Rancho with extended arms and a bone stock 90. Both rubbed on frame/radius arms. Big deal

Just seems so much easier to find some 35s and drive it. But you are obviously looking for a reason to tear into it so you will have an excuse to not wheel ;)

I seem to have some serious camber issues, could it be 4 inch coils in the 6 inch lift holes or could it be something corrected by an alignment?

if you replaced the 6" coils with 4" then yes it will do that, you will need to get some adjustable camber bushings that will correct the issue. most alignment shops should be able to do that

Like Tommy said, if the radius arms are for 6" and you have 4" coils it will do that. You might be able to correct it at an alignment shop. Too bad Sparling sold my 6" coils to the scrapper...

I was trying to ask if that looked like it could be from 4 inch coils or if a simple alignment would fix? it.

What was the last move you made with the truck before you noticed this? Was it backing up? Try pulling forward and see if it looks better. Mine and Karl's would look like the that when driven in reverse...it's just something TTBs do.

If it's like that all the time...then yes you might be able to align it with camber bushings but you might as well move the traction beams to the 4" lift holes.

two notes:
-When estimating number of cans, double it
-don't use rustoleum sandable primer, it is expensive and ****.

So the 9 inch build has hit about every snag possible, I'm going to hold off until I can do gears front and rear. Also the trick to a 9 inch big bearing swap is to use front rotors from a 2001 Dodge 4x4, not the bronco front that Ruff Stuff and 90% of pirate suggests. The Dodge rotors slip over the wheel flange without modification.

I need $887.20 to complete this....

AggieTJ2007
06-11-2012, 08:12 PM
yeah 9 inches are cheap to build right. just a good nodular 3rd with gears, lockers and pinion support is over 1k

BroncoJo
06-11-2012, 09:04 PM
yeah 9 inches are cheap to build right. just a good nodular 3rd with gears, lockers and pinion support is over 1k

You're kidding, right? I'll have less than 1 k in my whole 9 inch. Most of that cost is TTB parts/ Summit wish list

Budget 9 inch summary:
Axle $100
Yukon 1000 hp case $250
Detroit $150
Truss $120
Weld on brake brackets $40
Rotors $50
Calipers (had them) Free!
Bearings $100
Gears $125
Ring gear bolts $15
Crush sleeve and shims $15
Pinion Guard $60

Total $925

Add $100 if decide to go with a Daytona pinion support (which I probably will)

Add $500-1000 when I go 35 spline, but when I do this I'll more than likely be putting everything in a $1500+ axle housing

Maybe I'll edit the first post and keep a running expense tab, I bet that could get interesting!

have you looked in to explorer brakes with redrilled rotors? that weld on stuff is junk

Sparling
06-13-2012, 10:31 AM
explorer stuff won't fit with out a lot of machining to the rotor and axle flange to get everything to fit.

AggieTJ2007
06-13-2012, 10:54 AM
you got a plasma make it fit. On a full float the rotors press to the back of the axle flange that would make up the difference

Sharpe
06-13-2012, 10:58 AM
For some reason they are hung up on not pressing the rotor onto the back side of the flange...

Sparling
06-13-2012, 11:11 AM
Because travis doesn't want to drill a hole in the rotor to be able to get to the axle retaining nuts. The explorer rotor is 6 1/2" ID inside the hat and the 9" axle flange is just over 7" OD. The rotor he has works fine, it's just fitting the caliper brackets that's a pain in the ass.

robertf03
06-13-2012, 11:21 AM
what about redrilled expedition rotors?

Sparling
06-13-2012, 11:35 AM

There is no ****ing problem here, I don't plan on keeping this 9 inch long and did not want to spend much time on this so I called ruff stuff and it seems they have never put disc brakes on a big bearing 9 inch. Because of this it is taking a little longer than expected.

I've got explorer disk brakes on my 9". All I had to do was redrill the rotors and have the opening for the register opened about 1/8" on a lathe (could be done with a grinder though). And you have to get a spacer for the bearing retainer from currie.

Yes, the only thing that needed clearance was the bore of the register of the rotor...about 1/8". Yes big bearing (late model) 9".

Yes, the only thing that needed clearance was the bore of the register of the rotor...about 1/8". Yes big bearing (late model) 9".

What I was talking about it looks like if you trimmed a little off the bracket it would sit down on all of the way. the only downside is that you would be welding on the bearing end itself. That looks like the best solution to use the parts that you have.

That's what I did and it is off to paint

Why not go all the way to the bearing ends with the truss? Clearance?

leaf springs, I originally was and make clearance holes for the u-bolts but one side was a little short from ruff stuff. It should hold up fine for now and I want to go with a new longer housing when I lengthen the TTB

You can't say it's off to paint if you didn't move it. The Dowling Fab paint booth is on the other side of the shop.

more parts, picked up the auburn limited slip for $275, if what I remember from my old race-car days holds true, it should work pretty good.

The bronco will be there, the level of upgrades is uncertain. I've been gone but work starts tomorrow. I'm probably going to outsource gear installation due to time.
