Since it has officially been on its first trip, I guess its time to make a thread for it. Its name is Tom. My first vehicle was a small brown convertible that looked like Jerry, so naturally when I got this his name had to be Tom.

2006 tj
6 cylinder
6 speed

I got it fairly stock

19304

Added:
Replaced the ****ty chrome bumpers with these
RE 3.5 short arm kit
33x12.5x15 Duratracs

Recap of everything else thus far:
Put the lift on and had the worst death wobble ever. So to fix it we took the whole thing apart and back together several times, put on a new adjustable trac bar, drop pitman arm, steering stabilizer, adjustable lowers and new tires, and after 4 months of messing with it, something or some combination of those things fixed it - Thank God!

Took it to Alto this weekend. First time I wheeled it, had a lot of fun. But I definitely have a long way to go to get it to where I want it to be, and there is a long running list of plans for this thing.

19303 Pretty much the only pic I got all weekend.

But I bent a rear driveshaft this weekend :( So that the first thing I have to get now.

are you sure its a drive shaft and not just mud in the back of the rims? that can cause a drive line vibration.

definitely driveshaft, because i thought the same thing. I washed it and it still does it. and it does it when i accelerate, not all the time. And i took it in to mitas because i didnt have time to mess with it and he said it was the driveshaft.

Don't ever go to Midas. That's one of the worst shops in town and I have heard stories first hand about them taking money to install new cats and no work being done. If you want to pay to get your stuff worked on either go to Cardoc or Firestone.

Remove the rear shaft and drive in 4 hi. If the vibration is still there than you know it's not the rear shaft.

If it is shaft related, it is more likely to be a u joint or Cardon joint issue than an actual bent shaft.

if it is bent then you can take it to bvd off 2818 in bryan and they can retube it or fix it or straighten or whatever it needs. and yes you can drive safely in 4hi with the rear driveshaft removed until you get it fixed.

can you see a dent - or where it was hit on a rock? If you see a dent, i say thats your problem :)

vibration under acceleration sounds more like a u-joint to me. I would check that first, it is pretty easy to tell if you pull the caps off and the needle bearings are all dust.

you can check it without even pulling the caps by setting the parking break then putting the transmission in neutral. Try and turn the drive shaft by hand and there should not be any play in the u-joints.

Took off the drive shaft and that's not it. It's the tcase.

Before you do anymore "diagnosing" I would pull the codes on that CEL

How did you come to this conclusion?

heathermcc

based on the fact that we took the driveshaft off and watched this piece move up and down. i tried to download a video but couldnt get it to work.

I am really curious what could have happened inside that t-case to cause a vibration.

heathermcc
10-31-2012, 09:47 PM
i have no idea when or how it happened

That output isn't likely to bend before anything else.

I have been itching to get an atlas. Interested in a Tera low 4:1 case with 1350 outputs?

I see one of these http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/motor-tranny-t-case-performance/1011152-blowout-sale-sye-slip-yoke-eliminator-kits-np231-transfer-case-low-149-a.html in your future.

That would be the cheap way around that issue.

Being that it is a slip yoke I bet the shaft bound under compression and bent. If you have the cash I would refinement a sye if not get on some of the boards or call a few 4wheelparts and I bet you could find a output shaft that someone has taken out. If you want a whole case they will run about the same SA the she minus having to get a new shaft made. If you go the sye I bet I have a driveshaft that could be rebuilt and refined for the rear

Heather, I'm with Creighton. If you can't afford the slip yoke eliminator, and want a mainshaft to replace that one, I talked to my buddy Barrett who works at Collins Brothers. He has a mainshaft there he'd sell for $50. Maybe cheaper if you sweet talk him. :)

So BVD wont take the driveshaft I got from Creighton because its pipe. So I guess I'm gonna have to just get a new one.

Also PORC sent my part to my billing address not my shipping address, kinda irritated. When I called them they said that they cant ship it to a shipping address, and that they have to ship it to the billing address. I think its dumb-im annoyed. Regardless this project is still on hold for a while.

Its now been 4 whole weeks and counting without my daily driver

Tell them to completely retube it then. Still cheaper than starting from scratch

Someone in the club step up and build this girl a shaft. It won't take but a few minutes.

bvd said it would be cheaper for me to buy one than to have them fix it. so i bought this one:
http://www.rustysoffroad.com/driveshaft-16-5-tom-woods-tj.html

Put the tcase back on today. It runs. Something isnt right with the 4wd linkage though. We are going to look at it tomorrow. Basically when i put it in 4L its actually in 4h.

Fixed the 4wd linkage tonight. It's been having this weird clicking noise since we put it back together. Figured out tonight that my throw out bearing is going out. So I will probably replace that over Christmas break. But for the time being its driveable!

Still waiting on the rear driveshaft to come in the mail.

its been drivable in front wheel drive!
