Here it starts:

Hey everybody I have been on this fourm since I bought my Mj in Feb of 2012. I bought it with a rough country 4.5 inch lift up front along with a SOA conversion in the back and I HATE IT!!!! it rides terrible and looks dumb haha. But I am changing all of it so it wont matter. This winter I will put a 6.5 inch long arm kit on it just haven't decided which one yet.

The truck is a 1988 4.0 Pioneer 4x4 with a automatic trans (not sure which one) and a np231. I have come to find out it was 2wd from the factory and has since been converted to 4x4 by a previous owner.

It had 99,000 miles on it when I bout it and has about 101,000 now, It was born in canada cause It has a kph speedo, Celsius temp gauge and oil in bars pressure. It also has a block warmer. It does have some rust but nothing to bad and I plan on stopping it asap/

I have done alot of work to it and keep meaning to start a build thread. Its going to take a me a few days to get this build thread up to speed on where im at to day with it but Ill go a head and start it off. Here is it the day I bought it.

First things first were to get some new rubbers up under it because the old ones were a death trap. For now I got the cheapest most aggressive tires I could that would fit. I know After I lift the from more and level it out im going to be in the market for some 35's.

And now the wallet takes even more of a beating. A 97+ Cherokee electric fan to add inline with the stock mechanical fan cause the manche didnt come with one from the factory, and It would get a little warm when I would get into the really soft sand.

First weekend down at the beach with the bumpers and I had to put that rough country 9500lb winch in use for my buddy with a CJ7 on 34 inch super swampers.

The winch worked great!

Ok this is going to be pic heavy. I started tearing a part the 4.0 to install new Iron man motor mounts, a pacesetter header and a new trans mount. Up untill now it has been mostly just buying parts, then I started to get a abundance of parts.

the start of the tear down, labeled everything.

After installing the Driver mount I will tell you on the renix engine it is not a direct bolt on you will have to modify the driver bracket. you will need a 5 inch cut off disk or grinding disk on a cut off wheel, to remove the access metal that keeps the Iron man mounts from sliding in. It is quite a task but I promise you once it is done it is time and money well spent!

Jeep + Truck = Pants Creamed. Comanche, J20, Gladiator, whatever... all awesome. If you want more volume, try running a Cherry Bomb glasspack. I know, I know... it carries a stigma, but it will sound great.

Trade you mufflers. I have a Flowmaster that's a little loud for my taste. Not sure if/what value difference there is. I've just been thinking about getting something quieter now that I'm old and have kids. :)

So Next I noticed the steering wheel felt like it was about to fall off, shaking around and very loose, did some research and noticed it is a common problem with these year model jeeps. I had to tear everything apart and tighten up four screws that had backed out around the ball joint? of the tilt wheel assembly. This took some time and a few time of putting it back together and taking it back apart to get right. Finally got it all back together and everything works great but now a month or so after the horn is intermittent and I have the key get suck in the on position twice randomly. Haven't had time to check it out yet though.

so after sitting on the clearance problem for about a week and talking to a few different people, I was told that its very close but it should be enough room as long my motor mounts are solid. Which i just replaced with the iron man 4x4 mounts and they are VERY solid. But I was still rubbing the fan on the fan shroud also because the motor mounts lifted the engine 1/4 inch up.

However I just wanted to be better safe than sorry. so my solution to this was to drill new holes and modify the radiator support bracket to move the whole radiator/fan shroud Assembly back about a inch.

This is how I did it. First cut out the clearance on the bracket in order to push the radiator up under it. then I made the brackets

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p205/zebvance/D4012F22-9B6A-4766-A54A-A26BA12A9B01-1459-000001635553EACC.jpg

And here is the radiator support trimmed, painted, and the brackets installed on it.

so after all that it still gets kinda warm, so Im going to install the electric fan I have in addition to keeping the stock mechanical. Also Im going to install the datsun louvers soon.

I was worried that the head gasket might be gone after it was still getting a tad bit warm but ran a pressure test and it all checked out good! so as far as it seems im just not getting enough air flow through the grill because the winch, lights, and bumper is restricting it to much.

Time for a up date. I got these Datsun 280z hood vents and I had never installed them so go figured it was time.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p205/zebvance/037-2.png

First I made a cardboard template

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p205/zebvance/9148E571-7A9E-4092-9B1C-1BB675BE4B7A-7832-0000030694382F2D.jpg

The I started cutting and the next thing I knew I had 2 big holes in the hood!!!
I also positioned them so that the left vent opening was not directly over the distributor cap.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p205/zebvance/74A1070E-8AB0-44B5-A27B-EDB54B065167-7832-000003068FBD0C72.jpg

Then I used e6000 epoxy to glue them on. I don't know how well it will hold up but we will see.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p205/zebvance/06F1FA62-9C33-41CC-880B-A2BF76CA25DE-7832-000003068B6563DF.jpg

Then it was time to dry. ***

Now this is not somthing I did by myself. I have never opened up a transfer case and I was told it was just best to get it all professonally installed. SO I ended up getting it installed a J&P transmissions (aka J&K). they did a great job. Havent snapped a picture of it all installed yet though.

Had some blow by in the air filter. The CCV system is all new and I and get it to stop. Apperantly this is a problem with the 4.0's in jeeps. Did a compression test and the rings are good to everything checked out. turns out the problems is the intake flutes in the top of the valve cover sit to low in the head and suck up oil. The solution to this is to trip about 1/2 inch off the flutes. However I just got done pulling the valve cover off and just put a 40 dollar fel-pro gasket on it. So the solutoion for now is a 20 dollar oil catch can. and so far it has worked great.

Also mocked up the 20 in front and I think i, going to get rid of the hellas and mount it in that spot. Go the brackets in today so hopefully i can weld it all up and mount the rack this weekend.

is that the fill plug up at the top center? Seems like it would be puking oil out the breather all the time.

ok so time to start updating this thread. I wanted a roof basked to through my 40 inch light bar on and to get the tire on it. That way I have room in the bed for all the gear I need for those 20 mile trips down Matagorda Island to camp/fish. First after looking for ever I found a rack that just right for the dimensions. It is for an ez go golf cart.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p205/zebvance/5A1C021B-B469-40B4-8060-4749C42EA2A2-2685-0000010F078C0369_zps5a17d704.jpg (http://s129.photobucket.com/user/zebvance/media/5A1C021B-B469-40B4-8060-4749C42EA2A2-2685-0000010F078C0369_zps5a17d704.jpg.html)

And then I found some roof rack mounts from Jcr

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p205/zebvance/D4FEBEBE-A63D-4306-9E3B-F2156EE3A592-2685-0000010FBB141BB1_zpse1c24d34.jpg (http://s129.photobucket.com/user/zebvance/media/D4FEBEBE-A63D-4306-9E3B-F2156EE3A592-2685-0000010FBB141BB1_zpse1c24d34.jpg.html)

Next, Me and a buddy welded up a rack/mount system for the rack to sit on.

I plan on connecting the two pieces by bolts. I did this because for one it was a pain in the ass to try to weld them together and I wanted the back to be removable from the mounting system in case I ever decide to change it at all.

Next it was on to install the new Durango steering box. This box is a bit bigger and beefier and just needs some sort of spacer to bolt right up. I also got a steering box brace and but it on also.
The same time I did this I installed the new power steering pump, lines, and bracket.

After that I went on to install the one ton steering. In order to install this I had to drill out the tie rod mounting holes in the knuckles and pit man arm. I drilled them out to 7/8s and put a tapered insert in it. The knuckles were pretty easy to do. the cast seemed fairly soft.

Next up is the 8.8 install. Ordered a swap kit with the truss from iron rock offroad.

Also ordered a matching diff cover for it and all new brakes, cross drilled and clotted rotors and some bilstien 5100s.

Checked to make sure of the 4.10 gears. No burnt oil. Everything looks good.

All Welded up. Accidently didn’t put the shock mounts level with each other. Don’t really care though. Not going to mess up anything. I started to redo them but I realized that I didn’t have enough room to get the cut off wheel in there to cut them off. So oh well.

Hell, just don't put it in 4wd on the hard pack, you'll never notice it! That, and since the axle is already bent, who cares if it tacos completely! It'll make for good video!

Oh, and did you notice your shock mounts are askew a tiny bit..... :flipoff3:

Only thing you might want to rethink is cutting off those shock mounts and moving them up higher(level with the axle tube). They are probably going to get ripped off at some point and possibly destroy a shock with it.

The Truss didnt leave much room to do that with out making custom mounts and mounting them to the truss its self. I let them go and hopefully they hold up. I guess we will see.

If you don't want to relocate the shock mounts, I would suggest boxing in the bottom side so the entire mount can't get tweaked.

Your brake lines are also in some danger. I rotated mine on the caliper so they go up instead of back...

Finishing up the rear axle

I made new brake lines. Replaced the driver's side explorer brake hose with a second passenger side brake hose. The driver hose on the explorer is a double hose combining the frame to axle hose with the axle to caliper hose. I picked up a hose from a 77 F150 for the new frame to axle hose.

I also rotated the hoses on the brake calipers. From the factory the explorer brake calipers have the hose facing backward. This made for an awkward bend in the hose to mount it where I wanted on the axle. I cut a groove the width of a sawzall blade in the tab on the caliper using the hose end as a guide. This was just the perfect amount to rotate the caliper hose upward and still be rotationally locked by the tab on the caliper.

Ended up bending the tubes on my dana 30. Thought it was ball joints. Got it checked out and they told me the would have to get and install offset cambered ball joints to fix the negative camber. Then told me but that still won't put it back into the right camber specs, it will still be off by a degree or so. So that tells me it's deff bent. And all the measurements have told me that that the short tube it bent any way.

So I was looking for a waggy narrow trac d44. And can't find one. But I did find a unmolested low mileage tj Dana 30 for dirt cheap so I just picked it up to get it back on the road quicker. I know I know. I should hold out for a stronger axle but I don't have the time for that.

zebvance
10-26-2013, 04:17 PM
We'll got the replacement dana 30 back from sand blasting. Makes it look 100 times better. Going to go ahead and order these things for it.

Xrf ball joints
Poly sway bar bushings
Moog hubs bearings
Us standard 4340 shafts.
Spicer u joints
Artec truss with Jonny joint uca mounts

Thinking about getting
C gussets and a stronger trac bar mount.

I already have a 4.10 center section that I'm going to swap in.
I also will be swapping over all the new parts I just put on the old bent d30. They have about 50 miles on them. Calipers, brake pads, cross drilled and slotted rotors, and ODC diff cover.

I know I'm spending a lot of money to build up a not very good axle. But after already swapping the 8.8 in I wanted to stay the stock width as the Dana 30 ( or very close to it atleast.) so my only solution to that is a narrow track waggy d44, which I have been looking for for the past 6 months and been unsecessfull for finding one at a reasonable price. Or a tj rubicon d44, which are going for 1000-1400 on craigslist. I'm not going to do that either. the last option being narrowing a axle, and that's something I don't want to bother with.

So the game plan is rock this and the 8.8 for a couple years (hopefully).
Then when I'm out of school I'll be able to drop some serious cash on tons and build those.

Here is the powder coated axle. Got it done locally at Texas truck rigging. These are the same guys that powdercoated my bumpers and I do not wish to do business with them ever again. Terrible customer service, and they are a bunch of dick holes. I thought they gave me a pretty decent price when I dropped it off with the sway bar to get done. $60.00 then took them 3 1/2 weeks to do what they told me was 45 mins worth of work and then they bitch at me saying that I ripped them off and they made no money off it because they quoted me to cheap?!?!?

Anyway. Rant over...

Got a little work done today and also got the last of my parts in.

The USA standard 4340 chromoly shafts and alloy USA chromoly HD balljoints came in.

Also got the artec truss and c gussets in. Had to trim the truss a little bit. This is the upgraded truss with the artec jonny joint upper control arm mounts.

In the picture you can see the gussets and truss in place. The lower gussets are sitting on the buckets because they are not tacked on yet of course.

Went ahead and cut off the old upper control arm mount to mock the truss.

I'm also going to plate in the lower control arm mounts instead of buying some heavy duty ones for 100 bucks.

Also I have the 4.10 oem center section I'm going to switch the carrier to this axle sitting on the shelf behind the turdy 30....

This is about as strong as a D30 can get I believe.

Next on the list:

- Put the new chromoly ball joints in

- Attach and drill the Knuckles for the tapered 1 ton steering

- Install the 4.10 gears

- Install the Chromoly Axle Shafts

- Paint

- Install brakes,and diff cover.

Hopefully I can get this all done with in the week and this time next week Ill be pulling the old axle and putting on the new long arm lift.

KrazyKarl02

Why not locker in the rear and limited slip in the front, that seems like the more common way people set things up. I would think the locker would be stronger than the limited slip. But most people would probably toss that D30 for a ford 8.8 or 9" and weld it.

That's what I'm going back and forth on, how to set it up. The truck spends most of its time on sand, and I drive it every where I wheel. So my concern with a locker in the rear is how it will react to 3 hour trips of hwy driving. I have been looking at a limited slip for the front of it but I feel confident that a the axle will hold up to a locker.

zebvance
02-04-2014, 01:22 PM
I think it will hold up as long as I don't drive with a lead foot. The weakest part of the axle is the ring and pinon now. The rest of it is as strong as a d44. And if it breaks it breaks..... Just means a 9 inch and a hp 44 will be the next step.

Sparling

D30s don't have lockouts right? Which means that your front would always be locked if you put a locker up front. That would only make your locker issue worse on trips. I would definitely put it in the rear before I put it in the front with no lockouts. As long as you don't get a crappy locker you will be fine on the highway with a locker in the rear.

Shaggy

Put a Detroit in the rear. I would run one in any truck I own even my old 2wd f150 that rarely saw off road conditions. I would only go with a drop in locker of some sort in the dana30 and just have spare shafts. Super easy to change and only need a couple tools.

If you run an auto locker such as an Aussie or Detroit ect, you don't even notice the locker in the front when 4wd is disengaged. A slight rachet going around corners is all you will hear.

Rear locker's drive great on the hwy, not even noticable. They can be a little sloppy around town when they lock and unlock as you get on and off the throttle.

I'm not saying don't use a locker. He was trying to decide locked front/LS rear or LS front/locked rear. Since he specifically stated he was worried about putting a locker in the rear because of highway miles I was pointing out that the front would be more of an issue than the rear. I do think that a locker in the front with 35s on a D30 is asking for broken parts though it depends on what he's doing with it. Sounds like mostly beach cruising so he should be fine.

Rear locker and front limited slip is my vote. That's what my old bronco has it was perfect for road, sand, and mud. It would probably lack in serious rock crawling but the ability to easily turn with factory steering and not breaking parts makes up for it.

Yea I don't have 1500 to drop on beadlocks. For right now that money could be spent else where if I had it right now. The rims will get me rolling where I need to go just fine. Have a lot of other stuff on the list to buy before I buy beadlocks. Need a HO alternator BAD, The 61 amp alternator is struggling with just the H$ conversion headlights in. Then need to beef up all the charging and grounding cables. Would like to do a dual batt set up when I do that. Also Need to Replace the starter (its getting weak). Not to mention prolly going to have to have a custom front drive shaft made. I would have loved to have beadlocks. Maybe on down the road.

Summit says that tire can be run with up to a 11 inch rim. I didn't think it was a big difference to have a 8 inch instead of a 10 inch.

Huge difference when you try to air down, I would send them back and go for some 8 inch wheels. I have 8 inch wheels on a 13.5 inch wide tire.

Also just I feel like a front locker and rear limited slip would be a very "jeep" thing to do.

Ding Ding Ding. I have a LOT of experience wheeling the 33"-35" daily driven rig. If you are going to air down for sand without beadlocks, I believe you NEED an 8" wide rim to keep that tire from popping off.

Also I agree with the Rear locker and limited slip front. If you are concerned about the drive ability, use all your money on a select able locker in the rear and nothing in the front.

I agree. I ran 15x8" steel waggy wheels on 35x12.5 MTRs for years and never blew a bead. I regularly aired down to 10psi in the rocks. I would think if you are spending the money then better go with the 8"s and not risk it.

Yeah but for sand the 10" wheel would provide a larger foot print with less airing down which would be better for sand. If he isn't running trails or jumping the **** out of it on dunes then 10-15psi would be better in sand.

To me 10" wide wheels on a 12.5 wide tire look a little goofy. Either way you will be fine.

Beadlocks don't have to be expensive. I have no experience with beadlocks besides messing with the wheels Evan and Tommy have but there are less expensive options out there. Summit has some for about what you paid for those.

LINK (http://www.summitracing.com/search/wheel-diameter/15-in/wheel-bolt-pattern/5-x-4-1-2-in/beadlock-functional/yes?SortBy=DisplayPrice&SortOrder=Ascending)

You might be fine with those wheels if you keep them aired up pretty good but you would be limiting yourself if you ever wheel anywhere but the beach. I would either get 8" wide wheels or look into beadlocks. With a 10" wide wheel if you get any kind of sidewall flex you run the risk of pulling the bead off the rim. Trying to reseat a bead on a 10" wide sandy rim on the trail isn't fun to do. I put some 12.5 tires on 10" wide rims and I had to let them sit in the sun with some 2x4s stretching the tire out so they would even get close since I don't have a cheetah or any other fancy tire seating tools.

Also, I looked up an alternator for your truck and it looks like a Chevy 6.0 alternator would bolt in place. Not sure on the wiring but it's something to look at. They have a factory 145 amp alternator that should hold up better than a small case alternator that's either rewound or has a smaller pulley. HO alternators tend to not last as long.

Thanks for the help. I did call and get the wheels changed to 8 inch. As for the alternator goes it depends if its internally regulated or not. Thats what you have to look out for with the renix model 4.0.

This is the one I have been looking at. These guys from what I have heard make top notch products. Also looking at ordering my starter from them.

They're both internally regulated. All you should have to do is buy the alternator pigtail, and figure out what to do with the wires. I've swapped Ford 3g alternators onto a bunch of different things and it's really not hard at all to do.

Rock Auto has Part #8292603N for 105 with no core charge.

For the record, I ran 38 swampers on stock Chevy 16.5 rims, I thin 7" wide. I had to stand on the tire while it was on the mounting machine to make the rim fit. Think with 0 psi it would not loose a bead, I never lost one, never put air in them, etc...

I now have 42's and these great bead locks, trail ready and h1's. I put 20 psi in them, and some tires don't last a week... I have **** in the rims I know, but f' bead locks, I am not super impressed for a rig like the one in this thread the advantageous do not out weigh the pain.

Additionally get an alternator over 100 amps, I understand you want the most you can get, but just get over 100 and you will be good and notice a giant difference. Prior to the 3G swap on the klogger I could not winch in idle without killing the engine. After I could do whatever I wanted.

Skinny rim + wide tire = better chance of staying on the bead. On a side note I still de-bead the inner bead on my tires that are 14.5" on a 9" rim with bead locks. Just don't air down too low and you will be fine. I hardly ever lost a bead with 35x12.50x15 on a 10" rim with my heavy bronco. Smaller tires are much less likely to loose a bead as well.

Small update, Got the new OEM mopar fan hub bearing bracket replaced and everything back together$($500.00 later from the stealership). Guess what? That wasn't the squealing bearing. Turns out it was the alternator the whole time. I'm kinda in a predicament because I wanted to upgrade to an aftermarket 160amp alternator, beef all the charge/ground wires to 4 gauge and run dual battery in the tool box to handle the load I have. Problem is it is going to roughly run $750.00. After buying the tires, rims, lockers and fan hub bearing I am tapped out as far as funds go right now.

So, turns out in the fully loaded mjs with ac, they came with a 100 amp alternator instead of a 60 amp alternator. Advance had this with a discount code for $70.00. So that is the fix for now. I put it in and see how it goes. Maybe the extra 40amps will be all I really need. If that's the case I will plan on still beefing the charge/ground wires and I still want a larger reserve so I will hook up dual batteries in the tool box in the future.

One small issue however. Was trying to put the direct bolt in alternator in last night and the casing is a tad bit larger. Well it is a hair too big to fit in the alternator bracket for some reason. While I was replacing it I also found that the PO had broke off the second bolt that holds the alternator on off in the alternator bracket. The plan is it pull the whole bracket off this afternoon after class and shave it down a bit for better filament and weld a bolt to the broken off bolt stud and pull it out.

If it's worth doing, its worth doing right....

Put the new alternator in and realized the alternator bracket had a big crack in it. Cranked it up and it still has a squeal. After talking to Junior he suggested that if the rubber ring in the harmonic balancer was in bad shape it could be throwing the belt out of alignment and causing the squeal. I picked up a new harmonic balancer; new belt and I'm supposed to pick up a new alternator bracket today.

In the mean time while I was waiting on parts yesterday, I replaced my Trans Temp gauge because back light in it stopped working and wired up a small light above the switch panel so I could see them at night.

Also trouble shot a reverse light issue I was having. They were very erratic. First I noticed my dimmer switch had a short in it with a multimeter. So I replaced that. Then I started metering other things out and found I had a weak ground to the whole Dash panel and added a ground to it. The reverse lights are working well now but you have to drop it from park to drive to reverse to get them to come on. So now I'm thinking it is the Neutral Safety Switch. However the back light on my climate control is also not coming on except every blue moon. So when I get the time ill pull that out and see what's going on with that.

Anyway ready for this thing to be running right so I can get this lift on.

Well finally got the axle back with the 4.10's in and the spartan installed. I got ripped off it cost me a arm and a leg and took for ever...... oh well nothing I can do about it. Its done now. Hopefully I can install ball joints this weekend.

To those who have set up gears befor, How does the pattern look?

pinion depth looks is a lil deep. as the gears and bearings break in that pattern will start to move even further to the outside of the ring. coast side is gonna make some noise from the looks of it pattern, way shallow in the tooth

How much did you pay for the install? I'd take that back and say try again.

Why ask for opinions if you're going to ignore two pretty knowledgeable people that both agree the pattern is off?

I have only set up a few sets myself and I wouldn't leave it like that. Moving a few shims around would make a world of difference.

To set up gears without a pinion depth measuring tool(which most shops don't have) takes a ton of time to get right. U have to b prepared to tear everything down multiple times ,most shops will not do this. I charge 200 and still lose money on them. Did a 8.8 few weeks ago took 6 hours an five different shim combos to get it close enough to run.

Got a new paper weight in the mail today... The pitman arm I have now is 3-6 inches of lift. this one is for up to 8 inches. Should be good enough for the 8.5 inches of lift thats about to go on it.

Still going to have to drill/taper it to accept the 1 ton chevy TRE I got on it now.

Why do you plan to lift it so high (8.5")? Aren't you just running 35's?

Yup, I'm running 32's with 4.5 inches of lift right now and rubbing like crazy. I want to be able to run the 35s and not rub without chopping up the fenders. Its mostly a beach rig so the COG is not so much important for what it is being built to do.

You know you have to drop the bumpstops at least 1" for every 2" bigger tire you add, right?

Got some more work done on the new front axle. Was able to get it painted up and painted the track bar drop bracket, along with the knuckles. still need to drill them out for the 1 ton TRE's.

You could've bought a set of rubi 44's or a kingpin 60 for all the money you've dumped into that axle. And at the end of the day, it's still a dana 30 with shafts the size of rebar. Just sayin

Well if I would have known that I was going to bend the front axle and have to replace it before I did the 8.8 swap, I would have just went with a full width 44/9 set up. Before I bought this new d30 I did look for a narrow width waggy 44 but could never find one. I also found a couple of front rubi 44s on CL but people were wanting 1500 bucks for them. Plus The shafts and tubes in the front d30's are the same size that is in the rubi 44s. The only strength gain to the rubi 44s would be the ring and pinon size.

And when It comes down to it I have spent under 1500 on a fully rebuilt, locked, beefed up, and geared d30, VS. spending 1500 on a wore out stock rubi d44.
