He used some nickel rods that penetrated like a mofo. They actually melted the spider gears pretty well.

Nickel, not zinc zinc is bad to smell while welding and torching...

they're pure nickle rods, and i don't have any more right now, but what is there is welded very well, it is rated at 50,000 psi tensile strength, and set at about 75 amps, it melted the gears to one big puddle, i had to weld very quickly compared to something like a 6011, try it sometime, they're very cool to see

6011 has 60,000 psi :flipoff2:

i would have used 7024 or if its a dc capable welder (which it looks like a TIG power supply) 7018

It has AC/DC straight and reverse 200+ amps and 4 little toggle switches - I don't know what the hell they do, so they must not be important. Those rods had pretty high tinsile strength. Landon knows what it was...

well i'll try that, hopefully i'll be able to get most of the stuff done this week,
i still need tie rods and a couple other small things, but most of that i can get at work, so hopefully i'll have it outta the garage soon

Mine was welded with 7018 rods with a DC machine by a professional welder. Not calling myself a professional, but I have a few of them around my shop. It came apart and ate half the teeth off one side gear, and all the teeth off the other. But it hardly damaged the spiders and didn't do anything to the ring and pinion. Now it is welded side gears to spider gears with much more weld, side gears to carrier, and spider gears to carrier. Used 16 rods. I'm not saying that it won't last with it just welded side gear to spider gear, but mine didn't.

Hey check this out, I think they make them specifically for what you guys are trying to do...:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

how does this shackle angle look?

Cajun
02-25-2003, 09:09 PM
I think you'll be ok with that angle. It could probably stand to be steeper, but this way you won't have to worry about inverting it under full droop.

I'd turn the bolts in your shackle around, however. You probably won't hit anything with them, but I'd put the exposed threads inboard just to be safe. I think it looks cleaner, too.;)

Nice work, keep it up!

thanks, yea i have a lot of odds and ends to finish up, i'm goin to clean those shackles up and grind the ends smooth, i'm gettin my brake lines finished thursday and workin on steering this weekend, so hopefully it'll be done soon

I am going to put a "Powered by Toyota" sticker under the Nissan Patrol emblem to make it feel better:flipoff2: :flipoff2:

I won't break,
I won't break,
I wont't break,

Never been tested,
Never been tested,
Never been tested,

We shall see - extra parts are the name of the game this year...

Landon saying "my 'wife'"

This coming from someone who swore he'd never get married just two years ago. It amazing how much control the kitty can have over us!
