I finally got my hands on my in-law's K5.

I hope your tetanus shots are up to date, 12 years in Saudi Arabia weren't kind to the sheetmetal.

The beginning:

The end of the first day:

We're going for the "gasser" look.:D Seriously, we're waiting on the shackle flip brackets. If the USPS cooperates, we'll finish the suspension this weekend. Also in the works is some serious rust removal/fender clearancing/sheetmetal work, as well as a full cage in preparation for TCC.

A few more pics here (http://www.offroadrepublic.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=album86)

You're really going to like those Tuff Country springs. I've had them for nearly a year now, and they ride and flex better than my old 4" superlifts. It's one of the good things that came out of being hit by a miata.

[Mr. Burns] Eeeexcellent...[/Mr. Burns]

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the springs, David. I know that they're brand new, but they seemed a bit stiff. They'll get a workout at Katemcy. :D

When I got mine new, they actually measured to about 7". Since then, they've settled to about 6.5", and leveled out the truck as it sat a little high in the rear. I actually had to turn up the RS9012s to 4 because 3 was too bouncy.

They're not competing, just going for the trailride. That thing is NOT ready for any sort of competition. Doug and I are competing however, not sure why he's not on the list.

Suspension is done. We installed the Echobit shackle flip brackets, and new SS brakelines. Adjusted the draglink (steering is frighteningly close to perfectly aligned). Removed the dash and instruments as part of cage prep, as well as all plastic interior trim. Installed new distributor, plugs, wires, and coil. Raked and mowed 3 yards for our church, installed a new floor and wall, and played soccer. It was a hell of a weekend!

The springs seem a bit stiff, but I think that's just from them being brand new. I've heard nothing but good things about them. I think that the shocks may be limiting droop, but I haven't had time for any poseur testing.:D I think we may have a slight driveline vibe at @50mph but I'm not sure--about speed 'cause there's no instrumentation at all, or vibes 'cause it didn't exactly ride smooth to begin with. Oh well.

Now how in the hell are you going to fit in there Andy? It looks like the cage is about 1 foot to far forward to accomidate Andy+seat. Maybe you could drive through the cage from the back seat. Or maye Dia can drive and you can be the spotter.

:D

The seats and even I fit, I promise. My in-laws fit as well, not that there's that much difference in us size wise. The picture is just taken at a funky angle. However, headroom for backseat passengers is at a premium.

Oh, it's not my rig anyway!

Looks pimp... I am VERY impressed with how well your tube work is coming along. You'll be a regular California Fabricator before the summer is out...

wanna build be an under hood cage and radiator protector? :D

Thanks for the compliment, but I'm a LONG way from even considering myself competent with a bender.

As far as an underhood cage and radiator protector, I'm always up for new stuff. I do need sometime between now and next April to get the Scout done, dammit.

BTW, building a cage to fit under a factory hard top and go through the dash is a mofo.:D

wow- i am just wondering what kind of deal you got on it. the gears and lockers are what 1500? then the wheels are another 300. tires are a little worn but still good, man it goes on and on. Is is a long bed? Are you planning on swapping the blazer running gear into that one? it could be a cool parts runner, tow rig, or something to sell and get your money back out of it. Those look like some serious ass springs. I think the icing on the cake is the purple engine though.

He was asking $5,500, but we got it for less. Since it's not my rig nor my money, that's as specific as I want to be. It is a long bed, and we've discussed peicing it back together and reselling it, but no decisions have been made. As for the springs, they're Superlift, 12" up front and 6" + 6" blocks  in the rear.

The purple engine is what sealed the deal.:D

Doug--We're not sure what were going to do with the leftovers--Hell, we're not even sure how much will be left over! We've discussed everything from selling it for scrap to building a crewcab hybrid. Do you know of anyone that would be interested in the cab?

Brandon--Everything that makes this truck go is going under David's K5. We've got to have a running rig to represent!;)

Doug Krebs
05-01-2003, 01:57 AM
I've had thoughts in my head of building a tow rig in a few years with an old chevy crewcab body...I have no money at the moment but hopefully that will change soon.

Also, it's a shame that isn't TBI...you should find TBI setup for it, then it would kick ass!

Cajun
05-01-2003, 02:09 AM
You mean like the one sitting in the backseat?:flipoff2:

It was a factory TBI motor. The PO said he had trouble with it, so swapped in a carb. We've got all the original TBI hardware--wiring harness, computer, everything--I'm just not sure if the stock setup will do that engine justice.

What say you?

Doug Krebs
05-01-2003, 02:15 AM
Depends what you want to do with the K5, if your going to running angles I'd do the TBI. They can be upgraded very well for fuel delivery, but they are a little touchy when it comes to cams. That motor stock already puts out way more than i would ever need. What are your plans for the K5??

As you can see i'm writing a paper and i get very excited when i get mail since i respond within a minute.

Cajun
05-01-2003, 08:23 AM
The motor does have "a little cam" according to the PO. We're planning on building a crawler out of the K5, so injection would be ideal.

robertf03
05-01-2003, 10:00 AM
when you say everything does that include the throttle body? those are getting hard to find.

Through the research I've done on the tbi, i've read that they don't take well to cam swaps. Probably something to do with less vacuum throwing off the MAP sensor.

Cajun
05-01-2003, 10:20 AM
Yes, that includes the throttle body. We have everything that came on that engine from the factory.

So if refitting the factory TBI isn't going to work, what is our best option? Aftermarket TBI? That would work but a system that will deliver the fuel that engine needs will run about $1400. Propane? Do you run into the same problem with fuel delivery?

Doug Krebs
05-01-2003, 10:52 AM
Damn $1400???? What do you need to buy?? What has the guy done to the engine that requires that much more fuel?? You know how much horse power it puts out?

Cajun
05-01-2003, 11:43 AM
It has a 750 cfm carb on it. Like I said earlier, bored .030 over, ported & polished, cam. The Holley Commander EFI system that delivers 700 cfm is $1349.95 from Summit.

I don't claim to be an expert on this, so if there's a better, cheaper way of getting this done please let me know.

eight
05-01-2003, 12:42 PM
I'm not an expert on this, but what I've heard is that you just need to have a chip custom burned to match your mods. Then you can get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and fine tune it a little.

Krawler68
05-01-2003, 12:54 PM
Propane is going to have some CFM issues at that rate, but it would be pretty close... I think the Impco 425 is up to 450 Hp... not sure on CFM ratings.

Doug

Where would I go about finding information on such a product as well as the other necessities of a propane conversion?

Doug Krebs
05-01-2003, 01:29 PM
Call turbo city or arizona speed and marine, they bore out throttle bodies, sell bigger TBI injectors, and burn chips for more fuel and different cams. Search for them on google, shouldn't be hard to find them. I would think you could get like a bored throttle body for 225, larger injectors for like 250, and a chip for 150. Also, ask on coloradok5 some of those guys mess with that crap and thirdgenorg.com.

As of now, the 60 is in, 35 spline stubs/1480 u joints are in, and it's all-kind-of torn apart. Again.

Waiting for UPS to bring...Warn 35 spline slugs, hydro steer system, propane conversion, doubler, ORD triple stick, rear ElDorado disk conversion.

Finally, updates. It's getting scary-close to being done. Driveshafts should be here this week, then it's off to get exhaust on Friday.

This shows the propane tanks and storage boxes. The tie-downs on the lid of the propane tank "box" hold an icechest:D
