Do I fill the hub and knuckle with a generous coating of grease? Is the type of grease important?

fill with red tacky grease - inside the housing and inside the birfield
one side note: Nobody broke a birfield on the trip, but I watched a 297X joint and outer go on Troy's and a 35 spline outer go on Greg's

The only reason troy broke was because his knuckle broke off. I did the same thing colorado last summer.

Backing plates or no backing plates?

no backing plates, but you still need that 1/8" gap the backing plate makes. We always just cut off the outer part of the backing plate with a torch

I think I'll just clean up the backing plates and put them on.

When I found out I still needed the spacing I decided it was easier to just clean them up and put them on.

backing plates are gay - hold mud, bend into the rotor from rocks...
just take the torch and follow the groove to cut the outside off. You could easily cut and grind smooth both in 5 minutes.

now, given i know nothing about toyota axles...why not just use washers if you need the space there, i assume there are bolts that hold the backing plate on?

with the Toyota axles, it is easier to just trim off the outer part of the backing plate - you have to see it to understand:D
