ok, so I finally got a little free time to do some work and get some pics.

here's the scenario. in clayton I burned out my clutch and had a nasty run in with a few trees. so this is the documentation of work done since then.

I have a dana 35 front and 8.8 rear that formerly belonged to tyler herring. they have 4.56s and detroits. I'm swapping them in and then after school's out I'm gonna hack off the rear half of the frame, and use tube as I start the flatbed process.

here are some pics so far.

I've been having a problem with this part of the hub for a few months now. the last two times I've pulled off the passenger's side it's been difficult to remove because it was slightly warped (by slightly I mean it still looks straight to the naked eye).

today was a little different. this time it was more than slightly warped and as you can see I had to cut it off.

I've about fubared the rivets I'm trying to get out. problem is that they're still not out. any suggestions? I've got a grider and a drill. don't wanna torch it b/c I don't wanna fubar the frame rail where the new bolts will need to fit snugly. at this point I'm about to start on the other side and hope for better luck. the problem with the side I'm on right now is that the exhaust, specifically the cat are right in front of the body mounts on the inside of the frame rail; I can't grind from that side.

any helpful comments are greatly appreciated.

on mine i did two things:

1. grind the heads completely off the rivets and beat them out w/ a BFH and a punch

2. grind the tip of the head flat, punch it, then drill out the center w/ a 9/16" (?) drill bit. you dont have to go all the way thru, just enough to get thru the head, then hit it on the side w/ the hammer and knock the head off. then you still have to knock the rest of it out w/ a hammer and punch.

either way will work, just depends on what ratio of grinding/drilling/hammering you want to do.

my 1st advice though: GET A BIGGER HAMMER! :flipoff2:

Shaggy

they ended up torching out one side and then using my big hammer, a drill, and a punch for the other side... worked just spiffy:D

hell yes. thanks to tate and nutz for stopping by for moral support.

My friends and I heated up the riverts and used an air chisel with a flat bit to take the rivet head clean off then used the punch bit to push it out. If that doesnt work just torch it

after today (though it's not over yet) I have this left:

- buy/borrow a 7/16" drill bit and use it for about 5 minutes
- cut/grind/bend a nasty lip off a crossmember
- bolt on the remaining three lift brackets
- get the remaining snap rings on the ball joints (landon, those pliers suck :flipoff2: )
- bolt on each side of the front axle
- order new hubs

I think that's it. if things go according to plan (or at least close) I hope to be driving her around this week. it's been too long...

I shoulda took the gloves off, but the pic is big enough that you can probably tell the crossmember lip and the worn-down cutting wheel are getting the bird. :flipoff2:

What exactly are you doing? And why did you remove the whole frontend instead of just swaping out third members?

bburris

He got extended radius arms as part of the package deal from Tyler, so all this had to be done either way in order to utilize them.

went to whore wheel parts today. warrantied the hubs. conversion kit is on the way and should be here tomorrow. hopefully get the front axle back on tonight.

got new (longer) e-brake cables this week. those might not go in for awhile just because they're kind of a pain in the ass to install. I'm gonna go try to make the steering work now. I wanna drive dammit.

got new steering stuff and fuel pump this week. hoped to get everything done this weekend, so I started tonight.

after unbolting the bed (again) and pulling the pump out of the tank I noticed two things. the gas in the tank was still good and the inside of the tank had some neat designs on it. ok, not really, the truth is that there's matter in my gas tank other than gas. so the tank is draining tonight by way of siphon and tomorrow after the game I'll take a stab at getting all that crap out.

new pump is together and waiting to go in. I can't be for sure (because my light fell over earlier so I was working in the dark), but when I pulled the aparatus out tonight I got a bad feeling that the rubber gasket wasn't exactly sitting right. this would of course be the cause of the crap in the tank. anyways, with a little luck tomorrow I'll get the tank cleaned out and find out if she'll still start.

all for now.

now all I have to do is get her running.

nah I quit for the night after y'all left. partied last night, slept in today and hit it again this afternoon with a clear head. she started for the first time in 3 months at about 3 this afternoon.

ok, time for some annual spring maintenance. I need to do something with my steering. right now 9" of lift and 35s isn't condusive to stock steering. just post any ideas and suggestions and I'll comment later. I was gonna tell some of my ideas, but I just resized all the pics in this thread and now I'm late for class (thaxton, please resize the pic you posted... or just delete it :flipoff2: ).

other things over spring break will hopefully be clutch and frame repair. I initially bent one of the rear rails some in clayton last year. and last weekend I made it worse when I drug 2 trucks out of the mud (why I hooked to the already weakened side, I really couldn't tell ya).

make the steering now that you'll eventually use if you're gonna do an SAS. get rid of the :rainbow: TREs and get some tubing and heims.

froader03
03-02-2004, 08:45 PM
that's the basic plan... I've obviouly seen plenty of this, but will get back to those of you who have built it before. might have to go get my buddy down at vilas to do some work for me. :D

flatbed design has been in the works for a few month. my design is similar to the one all pro offers for toyotas. other than just a little more time and energy to fab, any cons of this type of design?

That's a pretty good looking kit, and easy to throw together, but expensive, and doesn't include the diamond plate. I'm sure you could coax one of our frienders with benders to help you build one just as nice, and you wouldn't have to worry about trying to retrofit toyota-specific aftermarket parts to something other than a toyota (ahem)
There's a thread in the pirate yota section with just flatbed pics...if you haven't looked at that, it's a good place for ideas

If you do like that you might as well make a tailgate too cause its almost closed in allready. I'm sure tying all your **** down on a regular flatbed would get old fast.

no, definitely not buying that one. all kustom fab. that's just a good pic of the basic idea.

are you still shooting for the SAS?

froader03
03-03-2004, 02:26 PM
yeah somewhere down the road. problem is I got this real nice setup with 4.56s and detroits and if I did the SAS I would not have 4wd until I matched gears in the new axle and still be out one locker.

Shaggy
03-03-2004, 09:16 PM
what ttb you got in there... is it a 44?...because if it is the gears and locker are interchangable with solid 44
