I will use this thread to keep everyone up to date on my truck. Last night I mounted the 1/4 ellip rear springs and the front axle. I will get a pic up someday. Here is an old pic.

the engine is in the shop getting re-bored so it doesn't smoke any more!!!

Broncocustom
05-03-2002, 02:14 PM
I know the engine is the shop getting rebored but with Scotts engine experiences I will bet that he will still only have three cylinders that work. Who thinks Scott should junk the three cylinder engine and get something better?

redcagepatrol
05-03-2002, 02:16 PM
Mabey I should put a 400M in there huh?

Broncocustom
05-03-2002, 02:21 PM
I never said that the 400 is any good. I have always said the engine sucks and was one of Fords worst engines designed. It has a few good points such as alot of torque but I have three fans on the bronco and it still runs hot.

Don't forget heavy!!!!

AgDieseler
05-03-2002, 02:50 PM
You could drop in a B3.9 I4 Cummins diesel. With a mild turbo, they can create up to about 450-475 lbs ft.

Krawler68
05-03-2002, 03:08 PM
yeah but you'll still be driving an oil burner down the trail... fawking loud, stinking black smoke, and they need to spool up... not much fun in mud, snow, or on the road.

stinger7401
05-03-2002, 03:22 PM
scott, where is your shop at?

AgDieseler
05-05-2002, 03:51 PM
you'll still be driving an oil burner down the trail...and they need to spool up

That's not entirely true.

Not all diesels have to "spool up." Only an engine equipped with an exhaust driven turbine will offer any turbo lag. Granted, diesels aren't the hottest deal going for mud racing or snow bombing, but when viewed in a rock crawling setting, diesels sure do make a lot of sense.

If you're spending a lot of time driving on the street, then turbo lag is a valid concern when thinking of engine choices. But for the low end torque that slow speed rock crawling uses, you're spending a lot of time in the 1000-1500 rpm range. A good diesel, turbo or non-turbo, will devlop all the the power you need in that power band without any assistance from the turbo, and thus eliminating turbo lag as a concern.

Highly biased,

scott what are those axles in front of the Nissan?

redcagepatrol
05-06-2002, 07:28 AM
There are Toyota's on the truck and D60's passenger and driver drop on the ground there.
I also decided last night that I am switching to coils in the rear. I think it will be simpler than the 1/4 ellip springs.

redcagepatrol
05-17-2002, 01:21 PM
Update: 5-17-02
I am now using XJ coils in the rear. Johnny joints all the way around in the rear. My pinion angles suck, working on the rear links now. I just hope that it won't be too big. Engine is still in the shop.

Looking good! When do you think it will be done?

redcagepatrol
06-28-2002, 10:33 AM
I am hoping to get it done over Christmas, but I plan on having it ready March of next year.

Krawler68
06-28-2002, 11:18 AM
I have a couple of questions... but first... NICE JOHNNY JOINTS>>> those things are badass...

aren't you trying to save weight here? why did you opt for square tubing if you've bought a badass bender? tube it 'mano!!!!

Also... you're going to keep yota axles? I thought this thing was going to be another big heavy rig, not a cool little buggy...

redcagepatrol
06-28-2002, 11:54 AM
I am going lightweight.

I have upgraded the Toy axles to a Landcruiser HP front and a V6 rear. The front axle is 63" wide and the rear is 61"

Wheelbase is 106"

From what I see in Competition, the guys with 38"+ tires NEVER win. I think that 37" tires took at least the first three spots on the score sheet.

I made a frame instead of going tubular because I like the ease of having a frame for building a truck and real bumpers. I like to yank etc... I need a real frame. Also, the frame is sealed and will be used as my air tank meaning that I will not need a seperate tank.

The body will be minimal, I will not even do the body work on the doors, and I will build some tubular ones with a sheet metal skin. I just want to get the look of the Patrol out of it when I get through.

It will have an exo-cage, but it will be built into the body. ie: the sheet metal will be welded to the cage. (so far I think)

Chadnutz
08-12-2002, 09:07 AM
Any more progress on the Toy-Schubring Patrol?

Who needs torque from the motor when you have a 200:1 crawl ratio?!? I'd stay light weight since you already have the marlins. Good call.

redcagepatrol
08-12-2002, 09:16 AM
I am working on mounting the body.

I want a minimum of sheet metal but still want the look of the patrol. I am trying to figure out a way to mount the rear part of the body to the cage and building the cage first. Everything is coming together all at once and it is making it very hard.

Can't mount the body until I get the height right, can't get the height right with out weight, can't cut the fenders/ make integrated rockerpanels/ cage without expected ride height, etc... etc... It is just sitting too high right now and I am not sure if it will settle out and where it would if it did.

end of ramble

robertf03
09-10-2002, 08:39 PM
building a cj5 huh? well at least that shop isn't half bad ;)

there was a thread on either POR or JU about patrol's saying how they were very overpowered from the factory compared to Jeeps and FJ's and stuff like that during the time. think that 22re will balance out the battle :D

redcagepatrol
09-11-2002, 07:12 AM
The Patrol had a HUGE 125 hp straight six in it when I got it. It weighed a ton, doesn't have fuel injection, and has NO replacement parts. That thing was way bigger than my Cummins. Of coure the 22RE will balance it out, it will work great.

Got the front suspension re-done last night (4" drop) - will start dropping the rear tonight

Seems like a little too much front fender to me... you gonna be trimming that for clearance or you letting the beefy 37's do it for you?

BTW... how is the rest of your cage planned?

What are the specs on those massive toy axles? What did you do about birfs? GOnna run an eliminator with CTM's?

redcagepatrol
10-29-2002, 01:21 PM
the cruiser Birfields will be send of for Cyro-treating (Longfields) and I will probably have custom chrom-moly axle shafts made for the front. I don't plan on having alot of up-travel, but I will trim if needed.

As for the cage - we will see. I already bent the back hoop above the seats and will run bars on the outside of the body along the upper body line. I should have it close to done by the end of the week.

Krawler68
10-29-2002, 01:33 PM
birfields.... Ughhhhh...

I say Cromo Shafts... birfield eliminator and CTM's... but that's cool if you want all us conventiaonal folks driving around your disabled truggy :flipoff2:

whatever birfield boy...sounds good to me... best of luck, the rear portion and rockers look forkin' kick ass...

redcagepatrol
10-29-2002, 01:56 PM

That front end is pretty big... may just be the angle of the pics, but did you consider narrowing the PAtrol front? It's looking good...especially the back... cage is looking good too... I am going to do a stinger like that soon too... but my support bars are going to run through the grill somewher and tie in as shock mount/ engine crossmember thing... Later, later...

rjlynn67
11-12-2002, 08:02 PM
Looks good man. What is the color of the body going to be? Well at least what it is going to be until the first time you roll it. You know since you could be the only person who has rolled more times than me!

redcagepatrol
11-13-2002, 07:55 AM
Same paint as before (Silver Grey Zolotone with a red cage)

As for the front - The tires stick out a good 6" on either side fron the body, and I am using the cage as a rock slider to keep it off the body. The front end is actually 3 or 4 inches narrower that the middle of the truck - it tapers in. I am not worrierd about hitting the body...

Busa came down and did my front bumper for me, I finished the cage less extra bracing, shock hoops, and spare tire carrier.

Lengthened the frame 2" to allow the rear part of the cage to look better and let the exo-cage bars connect easily. The body mounts to the cage where the tailgate is.

I cut out all of the rear sheetmetal and built a new frame to attach new metal to, should get to that this week.

Ordered gauges, wire harness, and alloy front shafts

I used the plasma cutter, jigsaw, and tinsnips for cutting the sheetmetal and some spare angle, pliers, lots of clamps, and a hammer to bend the edges.

Took off work today...
spare tire mount done
cage braceing done
rear shock mounts tacked in place, will wait to weld
finished winch mount

I took off tomorrow also, plan on making a firewall, mounting the clutch master, brake master, and peddles. I will also pull my axle shafts and send them off for treatment.

will get pics up later in the week, here is a tease...

What did you use to roll the sheet metal on the rear end caps?
a hammer, vise, four pieces of steel, and a whole bunch of clamps

to do:
mount steering ram
floor panels
windshield
dash
bottom of dash / top of foot wells
all wiring
all plumbing - fuel, brake, clutch, hydraulic ram, air
fuel cell
lots o bodywork
door hinges
door latches
paint - requires dissasembly of everything

If you haven't ordered the head light switch from Centech, you might want to do that now. I'm also searching for a wiper switch that will be a pull type (to match the head light switch), let me know if you have any leads/ideas on that. I don't want to use the GM style slide switch because I don't have a good spot to put it. Let me know if you want to get together on the headlight switch ordering and split the shipping. Maybe on the wiper one also.

~dso

robertf03
12-18-2002, 12:53 PM
Dave why not use a CJ headlight and wiper switch. I think the kit is designed for them, either that or they are so generic they bolt right up.

They also match

I think Scott's secret is having a shop. Most of us can't get away with cutting and grinding past 8pm. Seems just as I get my groove on its time to shut down and bring it all in before the neighbors call the cops.

davido
12-18-2002, 01:00 PM
Where's the best place to get one? I think a shop helps for space, but we were up until midnight several nights. I think for me it's mostly time. I don't have time to take off right now and Scott doesn't have the burden of 20 bitchy tenants....... not that I'm complaining. I'll get done soon enough. :D

Scott, do you have a bead on the switches already?

~dso

mark
12-18-2002, 01:13 PM
The headlight connecter is GM as is the turn signal, hi-beam, and starter conecters. Dave and I spent several hours hunting down the exact one so we could get things set up. But the Ho-Reilly's switch didn't have a knob or a retaining nut.

The wiper is a much more simple affair. Dave just wants a switch to match the headlight switch.

did y'all buy complete gauge sets? I'm missing the necessity of 10,000 RPM Tachs and 120 MPH Speedos...I've been looking @ Tachs for my truck (AutoMeter also) and will probably end up going w/ a 6,000 or 8,000 RPM.

redcagepatrol
12-19-2002, 07:44 AM
As for the meters, the choices are limited on the tachs in the ultra lite series.(small or big)

As for the progress - I WORK ALONE with nobody to talk to and nobody to bother me (my phone is the only thing that disturbs my work and slows my progress). I knock one item out and move right on to the next - mounted the hydro ram last night.

pure dedication... (must get done for tweaking before spring break)

As for the switches, I am going to use the factory Toyota switches on the column I have. This includes the headlights, turn signals, and wipers. I bought a starter switch and will mount that on the dash.

sent my Birfields off monday to be treated, am trying to get custom inner shafts made - this is not looking too good, and found someone to build me an inexpensive custom aluminum fuel cell for rockcrawling - will order next week after I get paid

it's 1/8" aluminum. I plan on sliding on the outskits where the tubing is. It will get bent a little between the braces if I land on the peak of a rock but i am not worried about it, there is plenty of support on the back side.

I am also going to bend the edges up with a hammer so they don't catch on anything.

Krawler68
01-13-2003, 11:30 AM
1/8" is plenty thick for aluminum...if it was steel I'd say go thinner, it'll be impossible to tear it up over the long run... especially with as many braces as your ran on the back.

I thought about it but the cross bar would screw up axcss to the oil fill cap and the distributer so I just added some bracing going to the motor mounts.

I only rebuilt it three times, it would only be four:flipoff2:

Besides i see you have made plenty of time to work on it lately... just as I have been makin plenty of time to fiddle with my pile. Nights and weekends allow for a lot of work. Having the shop to work in helps even more.

I redid the rear exo-cage bars and made them removable - like the body panels.

Well I was in RI last week and am in AL this week but got a few things done this weekend. I won't have pics up untill I get to a faster connection, but here is what I got done:

-redid rear shock mounts - made adjustable
-finished front shock mounts - made adjustable
-patched a large rusted piece of sheetmetal on RR fender and finished wheelwell
-welded and sanded seams in front tub
-redid front and rear exo cage bars - the rear are removable along with the body panels
-mounted front electric line lock and rear portioning valve

I will finish all plumbing and body work this weekend and will paint next week.

Wish me luck...

Now correct me if I am wrong here but if you were to mount your shocks in the top mount, either front or back, would the shock body not rub pretty good on the lower p[art of the mounts when under some good flex? Or will this thing flex? :flipoff2:

Is the rear shock mount made of flat bar or angle iron? I think if it's flat bar, you should put a brace to the back side. My dune buggy had shock mounts just like that (flat bar only) and they bent and it didn't weigh half as much.

As for the front mounts, yes they will hit if I mount them in the top hole. Deal is, the top holes are for longer shocks in the future and I will cut the bottom half of the mount off.
For the rear mounts - we will see - and yes it is flat plate, we will see if it holds up. Try it simple first, change it later.

I hate mounting shocks, it is just a huge guessing game. I am almost positive that they will all end up triangulated a little but I wanted to see how they do being straight first.

One question... why the bent rear links? Not that I know anything about this from experience, but on POR I had read that bent rears weakened links... you might want to gusset the lower side of the arm?

Hey dick,

How did you afford Bilstein 7100's? Are those Lee's old shocks? Look too new. They are badass... why did you spend all the money on those and buy the Non-Res model? They're only like 25 bucks per shock less than the ones with Reservoirs.

I almost bought some at Christmas, but couldn't quite justify the expense. Went 6100 instead.

Looking nice... a little wierd lines in the rear, but nice.

Doug

I've actually changed something since I built it... It's been pretty good to me.

Since I broke off my Redneck ram on a trip in OK and then wheeled it without the ram in Cibolo and Katemcy - I broke some studs on my steering knuckle - I have decided to fix my hydo-assist problem.

I bought a new ram and installed it closer to the axle (mounted to the knuckle and not the tie rod). The tie rod has over 9" of travel and mounting a 8" stroke ram limits my steering if mounted to the tie rod. This should make my steering fasted also.

I also added some "Oh Shiit" grips for the passenger - cut up the handle bars from my old BMX bike and used those - all I have to do now is figure out a way to hook up the brake levers to a bell or something...

A few more additions and some touch-up on the paint and it should be ready for a wedding get-away limo:D

I will try to get some pics up by the end of the week

On a side note, I looked at the date of my last post since my first trip out (Spring Break). It's been a year and 4 days:eek:

The rear end might be done and look good but he is going to need his wife to pull him around the trailer since his engine sucks. What a busy weekend...
clutch wasn't disengaging but the shift fork was moving. I thought that the slave cylinder wasn't moving it far enough.
First I blead the line - didn't work,
Next I welded a knob on the end of the slave cylinder shaft to make it longer - didn't work
Next - replaced slave cylinder - didn't work
Next - replaced clutch master cylinder - didn't work
Next - dropped tranny, removed clutch, inspected for problems, lubed up metal surfaces, and replaced throwout bearing. Put the tranny back in, then the truck wouldn't start.
It worked - tested it by using the starter to turn the tranny. I now turned my attention to getting it running...
1) I would fire and even rev up for a few seconds (if I put my foot on the gas), then die quickly. I looked everywhere for a wire or lug that I unlodged during my tranny R&R. Couldn't gind anyththing.
2) replace ECM with a spare I have - did the same thing
3) decided to try it without the computer - did the same thing...Hmmm...
4) found my EFI fuse that I have inside the dash was burnt out.

For future notice - it sucks putting a tranny back in completly by myself with one jack and only being able to jack with my feet. I got it done though, it just took alot longer that it normally would

It was now drivable and I was able to ramp it on the trailer to see where to put the shocks.

OK - what else did I get done? I notched the frame for link clearence and now the links hit each other when one side is fully compressed (not a big deal). Checked for air leaks (frame is the air tank). I also painted the open welds last night and tried to find a way to use the muffler I have. I changed the milky oil out of the tranny and t-cases. I noticed it was bad after drapping the tranny a time or two and it came spilling out of the top :gigem:

SO - it all seams to be working good now, I have to find an exhaust shop to redo the exhaust around my mess of links, bolt a bunch of stuff back, and find a way to mount the lights since I am leaving off my fenders.

been a while...

well, In preperation for the annual year end Clayton trip I ordered some new tires and some new front shafts!

I couldn't justify the $ for Krawlers so I just got 3 new SSR's to replace the two I tore and one worn one (have my good spare on the ground).

I also ordered some FJ-80 4340 front shafts from Dave at Polyperformance for $300 and 1 $300 FJ-80 4340 / CTM Birfield from Bobby Long to replace my popping right side.

I also ordered a new tranny mount from Toyota to replace my broken one.

I'm going to have to stay with the 37's and Toy axles for a while so I might as well make them strong...

I think so too... I have no idea, all the other's are rounded a little but there are a few that are just almost completly missing.

I didn't have the bolt at the end - what is that for anyways?

Never heard of anyone running it like that. I've always figured the hole was so you could put a bolt in there to help get them out when they blow and expand in the knuckle :confused2

I haven't had bolts in mine for a long time, but since they have that big fender washer on them it seems like they may help to keep the stub fully engaged on the slug. Does it look like your splines had full engagement Scott?

so I pulled out the other Birfield Last night (Driver side) and it had about 5 splines that were stripped on the end of the Birfield. Guess I'll have to order another one...

I wasn't going to buy a second one but then I noticed that I had some stripped splines and needed to.

I just did it to compare the two venders.
so far:
+ for Bobby's being pre-greased
+ for Dave's (Poly Performance) for getting here much faster

Dave says that his shafts have not been broken yet... :gigem:

new shafts and Birfields in.
all important nuts and bolts checked and tightened.
new tranny mount in.

Still need to do:
adjust rear axle location
trim rear fenders some more
cut and move some tubing on the pass. side rocker panel to keep the tire from hitting it.
fix a few rock lights
re-install spare tire mount and spare

Get Dodge to start...

UPDATE:
I decided to pull apart the font end for a few items that need to be checked out: The "locker" was slipping, and I have one bolt hole for a caliper stripped.

Background:
- started with ram assist
- broke ram off in Clayon years ago
- tried without ram at Mason - it sucked
- went full hydro, didn't change the ram
- broke a front inner shaft in Moab
- changed the ram so it could turn right (full hydro)
- swapped to all 4340 stuff in the front end
- ripped off the ram in Clayton
- Slims fixed me up pretty good in Clayon, I thought I was good for a while
- went to CO - ripped it off again (stripped bolt hole)
- welded up the ram a new way in CO
- went to Clayton, notice slipping welded front end. Hold's but slips every now and them

Anyways - i am fixing it - the welded front end and the stripped bolt hole.
I'll never get time for the CJ... Working in KS tonight...

These pics are from last night - I couldn't get the 3rd member out without taking off a u-bolt. Couldn't get the u-bolt without cutting it off. Couldn't get the 3rd out without taking off one side of the tie rod. Typical crap...

BTW - the Bobby long joint still feels good - the Poly joint I am a little worried about - we shall see...

Why didn't you weld the side/spider gears to each other instead of to the case? Seems like the tensile/compressive properties of welding the gears would hold better than the shear properties of welding to the case. I've seen it done either way, but I've always wondered why someone picks one or the other.

I welded my gears to each other and left the case alone. Thought it would make kind of a mini-spool (I know that's a dirty word). It's lasted pretty well, but of course, I don't wheel as hard, or near as much, as you do...

all 4 gears were welded to the case and to each other. They all broke. I'll just re-weld it - it'll be fine.

It's lasted for like 4+ years that way...

So it actually broke the welds between the gears and sucked them through? Man you do wheel hard! :gigem:

John,
your right - it looks like I didn't weld much in there. I have welded there before, not sure why I didn't do it then - It was over 4 years ago...

I do believe that it should be welded everwhere.

Yes - that's the rear carrier - V6 model. The front is a V6 but it's a high pinion so it's a different design (FJ-80)

I was running low on jack stands...

Here is the ice chest mount and the wiring for David

David,
basically,
the driver side engine harness holds the headlights, turn signals, horn, rock light, line lock, reverse switch, and oil pressure sensor

The passenger side engine harness has that side's rock light, fan switch, temp sender, air compressor switch, fan power, and the front Hella lights

The rear driver side harness has the rear lights, fuel pump, fuel sender, rear rock lights, speakers, overhead light, VSS sender, radio, and radio antenna

You really need to see it to understand all of it...

redcagepatrol
12-12-2007, 11:11 PM
more
the large cables on the frame are for the winch.
The major grounds go from the battery to the passenger side block (under oil pan) and then from the block to the passenger side frame under the engine mount.

It's just a full hydro system using a single ended ram. I did it the same way on Lynda's.

Step 1: Call PSC or whomever and tell them that you need everything for a full hydro set up - with X engine and X tires, trail use only.

Step 2: install all of the stuff they send:
- high flow pump
- resevoir
- ram with mounts, mount one side to the axle and the other to the tie-rod
- orbital valve. this is what your steering column goes into to tell the fluid which side of the ram to go to.

Step 3: run all of the hose, fill with synthetic fluid, and your on the road:gigem:

I figured you might have pieced something together. I'm looking at drilling out the stock pump and going with a surplus center ram and whoever has the orbital.

Thanks!
