View Full Version : Motherboard

I think I need a new motherboard. I've narrowed it down to a memory issue and it's my RAM so the only thing left is the motherboard.

I'd like to use the same processor, ram, etc... It's plenty fast for what i'm doing but it keeps locking up. Really sucks when you've done an hours worth of work and it all goes bye bye...

So I'm looking for a motherboard for a 1.4 AMD athlon with 266 front side bus.

Edit: RAM is just plain old PC133

If you have an old one or see one for sale let me know.

yes, thank you, but I actually thought they wouldn't sell motherboards this old... maybe i shoud look

Fry's still carries the old one asus i used to have but it was PC266 i doubt they carry anything that is PC133 anymore, although sometimes they have motherboards with spots for two different kinds of memory

Get an ABIT from www.allstarshop.com

I have great luck with them. No need to search for an old crappy motherboard. Expect to spend 90 for the MB with free shipping. You can get good ram for cheap.

I suggest.....

Abit KD7-G with Audio and LAN $95
Kingston 256MB DDR400 PC3200 $55

You may as well get a nice motherboard and nice ram so when you buy an XP 2.x you will have a pimp computer.

If you don't need integrated Audio or LAN there are other models.
For any other computer component suggestions PM me.

try some mom and pop computer shop or something. they are a few in humble. i bet they will have some old crap laying around

Doug Krebs
10-08-2003, 01:30 PM
I agree with you nutz... but If i'm going to spend 150 I'd rather just spend 500 and get all new pimp ****. My computer still works perfectly fine. I'm actually using it at work right now, it just locks up at completely random times. So if i can spend 10-20 on an old motherboard I'd rather do that right now.

jerryg79
10-08-2003, 01:45 PM
we had really bad luck with abit at work, and there warranty **** sucked ass,

have you tried ebay yet, i wouldnt want to buy a whole computer off of there but for just the mb i might give it a shot

Doug Krebs
10-08-2003, 01:49 PM
Yeah I'm looking on ebay... seems this combination with the pc133 and my chip isn't too common:mad:

I guess I might end up getting a newer motherboard like nutz posted and getting new ram

jerryg79
10-08-2003, 01:57 PM
just get a combo from fry's then for like $150 you can get motherboard and processor. i got my soyo from there and it ran fast as dog **** until my case fried it and my old asus in a week.

Seems i have a short in my powersupply somewhere that has been giving me hell since last year.

For now i use a kickass intel 733, but with my superfast hard drive i really barely notice a difference.

I've got the 1.47 gig athlon XP processor with 266 bus on a BOISTAR motherboard. My computer kicks ass compared to equivalent or slightly faster P4s. So it must be the motherboard, I only have 512 of PC133 ram. I also leave one side of my case open to let heat out.

You probably know this, but I'm sure other's will read it too. If you have too many programs running in the background your computer will run slow and lock up. My parents wanted me to order them a new computer so I looked at theirs and the P2 was running about 15 programs because of the stupid kids. I shut them off and they've never had a problem again. Computers also collect a lot of dust which builds heat and causes them to lock up. You can get dry air for electronics at walmart and blow all that **** out. And windows XP is the devil. If you have an older computer stick to 98.

What MB brand hasn't put out at least one board with problems? I've built 7 systems now using Abit - no hardware conflicts no failures.

Doug - What d you mean spend 500 for a bad ass comp?

After that 150 all you have left is a $75 ata $100 7200 rpm harddrive and a 100 2.x athlon.....

if you game you'd new a new video card but this motherboard lays the groundwork for your future upgrade.... don't waste you money on outdated computer crap. It's so cheap now.

All I'm saying is that in four years of working at microage we had horrible luck with Abit. The percentage of bad MB with Abit compared to straight up intel was prob 3 or 4 to 1.

I think intel is the most reliable, but AMD **** has the speed. I run AMD **** though because it is dirt cheap

BTW your case cools better closed up so that the fans pull air threw the case. that is how the case is made to cool. you dont drive your car around with the hood up do you?

just get a mobo/proc kit off ebay and use your old pc133 and get some more ram to get at least 256.

No reason to buy 'pimp s***' Industry moves so fast, you'll buy 'pimp s***' and after 2 months it wont be so pimp and it will just be ****.

Then again i'm a linux user and i dont need a 10.8GHZ 512meg computer....and i'm also cheap.

Hi I'm a Info graduate, I know about Morton's law, thanks. All I need is someone's ****ty old mother board. I have 768 Meg of PC133 so you can see my reason for not wanting to get rid of it. I'm looking to spend $10-20 dollars. Nothing runs in the background of my computer unless it is vital.

Thanks and gig em:D

I threw together a system a while back for my old boss at the Rod Shop and used an Iwill board, but it was setup for an Intel chipset. It was stable and didn't lock up. Probably one of the better cheap boards out there.

Oh yeah ECS are fantastic, i had one with no video, one with no go at all, and i took it back to fry's and there was a stack of broke ECS motherboards to the damn cieling.....

wtf. IWILLs Suck. And ECS aren't the greatest, but its a good quality board. Its not my fault that some people dont run a big enough powersupply. And the ECS you saw were prolly the ones with the dated bios. Get the K57SA Pro and you'll be fine.

And if you have a video card, no shared video shouldnt be a problem for you.

Dammit I meant Moore's Law: processor speed doubles every 18 months or some **** like that...

Anyways, I might just get a new board, processor, hard drive and ram... The sad thing is what do I do with the **** I'm using now?? All of it is good and decently quick but the mother board makes it lock up randomly. God knows we have the dana 60's of cases:rainbow:

If you're happy with the size of your HD, by all means don't replace it. You can also reuse your PC133 as long as your board has slots for it.

The hard drive is only a 5400 RPM so with all the faster crap that would be a real bottle neck. I haven't looked at motherboards in the last 2 years really, so I thought PC133 would be outdated. i would think that would also be a bottleneck. I don't have to be so cheap anymore since I'm not in college, but you can't take the joo out of me.

I can also write most of this off as a business expense, but I still hate wasting all these parts.

Doug Krebs
10-10-2003, 09:12 AM
Also, I'm looking to run dual monitors. It would help with all this database crap i'm writing to have 2 areas. I guess i'll have to explore those options as well. I do absolutely no gaming... Anyone have suggestions on these?? I think they call them dual head?

Violentv8toy
10-10-2003, 09:34 AM
Hell it doesnt matter THAT much about your HD speed. You most likely wont be able to tell the difference. But if you want to you can get another one.

If you're looking to go dual monitor, you'll need a video card that supports that. Look for a newer ATI or a GFORCE graphics card.

If you're gonna be working with huge amounts of information and many programs at once, i suggest at least 512 DDR (new kind of ram) or 512 PC133. Hell, i run 256megs of pc133 in my 2.0 Athlon and it does what i need it to do. RAM is what makes the proc effecient. But yeah, 512 pc133 should do fine. The ECS mobo also has slots for both DDR and pc133 so if you decide to go pc133 for a while and upgrade to DDR later, you can.

Doug Krebs

Think i found a decent cheap video card Linky (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=14%2D106%2D143)

I'm looking at boards now.

jerryg79
10-10-2003, 11:36 AM
Matrox is a pretty good card, that used to be our highend card at work, i have a 128mb card now with their chip on it, but it was assembled by some other slanteyes and they slapped a diff. company's name on it.

32mb for 88 dollars seems a little high, also make sure that if one of the outputs is DVI make sure it comes with a converter back to vga, i remember the converter being like another 5 or 6 bucks

Also if your looking at harddrives the thing that will really increase the speed is the cache, usually the 8mb cache costs $15 bucks more but it is worth it
