so since i broke my dodge's driveshaft i get to get another one. is there any difference between a 1/2 ton short bed 4wd shaft or say an extended cab or long bed's shaft? is one longer than the other or do they all use the same one?

I'd assume they are different.

just make one out of a piece of pipe like ryan did.

i'm pretty sure the driveshaft is the integral part of making the different wheel bases work. i didnt know until recently that in fords, a regular cab long bed (like seth's) actually has a 6" shorter wheel base than an extended cab short bed (like mine). they are different, but you can always have 'em shortened. the ends will most likely be the same and its cheaper to have one shortened than to have one retubed.

Whatcha gonna do with the old broken one?

i dunno. i could put it on the shelf at rudy's maybe. other than that i dont have any plans for it. i'll probably keep the u-joint if it isnt messed up.

so there are no swb shafts at any salvage yard in town. they have a lwb one though. they said it was 2 piece. thats the closest thing i found here at the junk yards. there's one in conroe though for $125.

how did you make yours ryan? just cut the ends off the old shaft and weld it to the pipe?

Since you got nothing to do with it, I could use it for parts to make me a spare.

Isn't it just the tube that broke? It would cost about $100 to just have it retubed.

Yep, that's about how I did it. I think I may have just been lucky on the balancing of it though.

i had mine retubed at seguin alternator and drivetrain. cost $60.

you can get it re-tubed here in town, BVD on 2818 down from the VFW or on College at Bryan Drive Train across from Chicken oil. That is what I would do, 60 bucks or so prob.

Both of those places said by Jimmy quoted me about $100 to retube mine. .095" is the thickest they'd go. Maybe if you check around enough you can find a place that will go thicker.

ok, i'll check some of those places tomorrow to see what they'll charge. thanks.

Bryan Drive Train will take a while to get to it. He works alone and rebuilds diffs, trans, driveshafts , and all general mechanic work. I went in to have a drive shaft to be reyoked. He quoted $30 more than Austin Drive Train and it would take three weeks. I had it done in Austin because of the 3000 rpm driveshaft balance and same day work.

i went to bryan drive train and he quoted me $150. i said no thank you. i would rather drive to conroe for a new one. i havent checked the other place yet.

try brazos valley out on 2818, I know he can balance it as well. I don't remember it being that much when I was building the scout.

Not to hijack, but I need my rear shaft shortened, about how much would it be at BVD? What do ya'll mean by retubing?

It means saving the old yokes and installing new tube between them.

They reuse your old flanges and install a new driveshaft tube to connect them. If you just need your shortened then they can just cut and re-weld one end and you should be able to get off a little cheaper.

I had mine shortened and the CV greased up for $46. If they shortened it and rebuilt the CV, it was $105. Not bad.

Not to beat a dead horse, but did you get a shaft retubed Dan? I ask because I need my rear shaft lengthened and I'm trying to figure out where the best (cheapest) place would be to take it. I figure I come up to CS anyway, I can bring a shaft up with me to get cheaper work done to it.

yeah I did. now it is bright blue too! :gigem: I think the total came to around $150, with the computer spin balance and they replaced at least one of the u-joints too. I got it back in a day or two as well. I would go to them again if I needed anything else.

i dunno how close you come to Seguin when you come up to CS, but i've had mine retubed at Seguin Alternator and Drivetrain twice, and shortened there when i put the 60 in the back....pretty good job as far as i can tell, and its shiny when you get it back. if you call ahead of time they'll do it while you wait. it was only like $45 to get it retubed and like $75 when they shortened it b.c. i had them put the bigger yoke on it to fit the 60.

After the July 4th alto trip, I am forced to do some work on the rear drive shaft. I was thinking of having BVD or Bryan Drivetrain build me one. How can I go about getting the correct measurements for them to do it, or will it be best to just take the truck there and let them do it. Either way, I will wait till the 60/70 get put in, and may have them make a front for it also.

if your not gonna have it done in waco. id say order one from longview driveshaft. ive had one of theres and one from bvd and i liked longviews much better.

non highway use, make your own. take your yokes to the steel yard and find a piece of pipe that works. Take a measurement at ride height and allow about 2" of compression
