i just got a foam/rubber valve cover gasket, it is new i guess cuz usually i get the cork ones. I have never installed one can i use a bit of silicon on it like the cork one or do i just throw it on and tighten the cover bolts ??

You gotta put the silicon on it. I have the same type on mine.

i had the least amount of valve cover leaks on my 258 with the foam gasket and no silicone

I used the silicone rubber gasket and gasget sealer only between the cover and gasket. Nothing between the gasket and block. No leaks.
