I don't know if anyone is looking for trailer, but I saw this add in one of those area newspapers:

Twenty (20) foot utility trailer! Used, bent a little!
Works good! $350! Call 936-499-6032, Individual.

Hell, I'm not sure what bent means... but for $350 it might not be a bad deal. Almost sounds like it's stolen at that price!

hometown shopper, you know those free classifieds you can pick up anywhere. I guess it's local to north houston.

Just called the guy.

~2 years old but pretty beat up
Needs New floor pretty soon(wood)
No Trailer Brakes (so it won't work for me)
Bent means the toungue is bent upwards about 3", but he says it still pulls fine.

He also said that he would even sell it for $150.

Speaking of trailer brakes, my truck weighs about 4500lbs or so, if I pulled it with a 3/4 suburban, I would need trailer brakes, right?

for a 150 bucks you could put a couple hundred into and have a decent trailer. Brakes are not expensive for a trailer, although i have no idea how much a master cylinder costs for a trailer.

hmm, anybody know how much Trailer Brakes are? Does the trailer have to have anything special to allow for their installation?

Doug Krebs

If they are real trailer axles usually they will have the mounts for the brakes.

Ok these are proably high priced as they are stainless steel lines and disc brakes, but one axle looks like 400 and and second axle looks like 250. This is also a surge brake setup. I'm sure you could find MUCH cheaper than this. This is just the first thing I found. Look at page 26

I realize i'm dumb and trailer brakes dont' have a master cylinder unless they are surge... so electric brakes probably run less than 300 an axle if you needed to get drums and thats a 12 inch drum and not looking around.

Ok, I just found out what a Utility trailer was - these are NOT meant to be car haulers. They are usually not trussed underneath as they are reinforced by the angle iron used on the sides. You cannot remove the sides & it is likely not wide enough to fit big trucks on. Even if it was, it would look really funny and probably break.

Anybody need to haul lawn mowers? Brandon?

I'm pretty sure our 16ft trailer is a utility trailer and it will fit a blazer on it. Now it won't fit a fullsize axle with wide ass tires and backspacing. I'm planning on towing my imaginary buggy with it.

Oh, and I pull my Jeep (probably around the same weight as your 4-Runner) on a short ass trailer with an F150 and no trailer brakes. You just have to be careful and take it slow.

Ok, I was imagining high sides & whatnot.

I left the guy a message to call me back with how high the sides were and what the width was.

Do you tow it on long trips like that? I want to be able to tow this pretty far and I can't imagine a heep weighing as much as the 4runner with all that crap I have bolted on there, but I may be wrong.

I need to go weigh mine, but I'd say it's pushing the 4500 lb mark. There's a lot of weight there, I'm just not sure where it all is...

So do you just tow at low speeds or do you actually take it out of the town and on the highway?

I ask because I would love to do without trailer brakes as I have to add them to the burban as well.

It's 82" wide and sides are 14" high. Doesn't sound too bad. Now I need to go measure my truck.

no one should ever "love to do without trailer brakes".....if trailer brakes are working properly, the truck/trailer combo will stop faster then just the truck. also the break controler is extreamly easy to install...may take all of 30 minutes to do....

Yeah, It's only time & money, both of which I have a big surplus of right now. http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/ruinkai/flipa.gif

Well, are you going to buy this thing or not? If you don't I am, because I definately need something else to tow with. I don't like not having trailer brakes, but I've done just fine towing from Corpus to Alto, Katemcy and Llano so far. I've also towed Stef's car to and from CS a couple of times...

Well I am at least going to go check it out. Want to go with me Bret? That way if I don't get it you can.

I did measure the 4runner and at most it's 76" wide, so it should fit. I am still a bit scared about the bent toungue, but it's worth a look.

For that matter though, I don;t know where the guy is located. I will give him a call tomorrow and find out. Maybe go take a look tomorrow evening. Anybody else want to go that knows anythign about trailers - I'm taking the burban so it will be comfy.

I won't be back up there until the 15th, but if you don't want to deal with repairing it (the deck or tongue) then I may pick it up as a project. The trailer I've been using is 12 ft by 77" and my Jeep barely fits on it front to back, and just barely squeezes down the rails...

On top of that, lance said he would buy the axels for more than $150 if they aren't bent. So I may just buy it regardless.

I also spoke with the guy, he's in Plantersville but I don't have an addy. Too narrow and light for me, hopefully it works for one of you guys.

You need to take some skrilla from your motorcycle budget and buy that for us bigtime!

I've got my sights on one locally, we'll see what happens.

There's nothing wrong with useing a utility trailer to haul a vehicle on. Electric trailer brakes are about $200 per axle. One braking axle should be fine. I wouldn't be scared to tow the runner behind the suburban with no trailer brakes. My dad's welding trailer is about 4000 lbs empty with no trailer brakes, tows fine behind 3/4 ton or more, never had less than a 3/4 ton.

If it turns out to be 20' 8" with closed sides and d60 and 14 bolt outers on the axles I want to know about it.

Well I am not going to be able to go look at it until at least this weekend anyway. It is in plantersville.

BTW, the Suburban is a 3/4 with an 8.1L - the manual says I need trailer brakes for anything over 4000 pounds I think, but then it says I can pull up to 22,000 if I do.

might wanna ask Hal about towing w/ the suburban....thats the exact one he's got...it hauls ass, even w/ a ~6000lb F150 on his trailer he was doing 90mph on I35.
