I bought a 14 bolt and was unsure how to determine the ratio. the numbers on the ring are "2 Gm 327722 10 41 3 87".
Does that mean that it is a 3.87 ratio? Cuz ive been looking and if its a 41 tooth and 10 tooth r&p then it should be a 4.10 right?
And what about the carrier. if its a 4.10 and lower carrier then that means that i couldnt put lower gears in without swapping cases right? Whats the difference in the two?

It's probably a 4.10:1. The 3 and 87 probably denote when it was made. Try Steve Gerstner on Pirate if you want to know for sure, or it may be listed in the 14 bolt bible.

As for gears, you may be able to us numerically higher "thick" gears with the carrier you have now.

The 2 numbers "10 41 " mean 10 pinion teeth and 41 ring gear teeth

41/10 = 4.10

And Cajun is right, the carrier break for a 14olt is at 4.10 so in order to run lower gears (numerically higher) you have to get "thick set" of gears. I hear they run a little hotter and make more "noise" but are pretty much the same.
