Looks like I am going to be able to make to CO, so I need to get the Scout ready. Anyone want to lend a hand? Here is the list, I will probably start on it tomorrow, so just give me a call.

replace tranny cross member
weld in new shock tower
weld in rear body bushing support
fix brakes - may switch to rear disks
*may* go GM TBI - not sure

anything else I come across.

just give me a call,

If you already have the calipers I guess I'd probably stick with the setup.

76-77 cj will be the same thickness and $$$ as your scout. Do you remember my attempt at rear discs on the old rear axle? You pretty much have to machine the rear of the axle to work with those discs.

For my scout rear I was thinking about using eldo calipers with 88ish-91ish chevy single cab half ton rotors. they are the right thickness to work with the eldo calipers and fit over the axle hat with no machining, but you do need to redrill to 5 on 5.5

What I'm doing on mine now is suzuki sidekick rotors that fit over the wheel with no machining, and jeep grand cherokee rear calipers. I did have to enlarge the holes a little on the suzuki rotor. Grand Cherokee's use a drum parking brake so I'm doing a t-case setup with a rotor from TSM (http://www.tsmmfg.com/Pinion_Mounted_Parking_Brakes.htm) and whatever cable brake I can dig up at northern in the go cart section.
nissan maxima rear calipers will work with this rotor and have a built in caliper

Could I put the rotor on the out side on the axle flange? Or is there just not enough of set? The rotors are cheap, 35 bucks a peice at Advanced. It is the 1 1/4" ones that Scouts came with that are 80 bucks.

What about wheel studs, did you find some long enough?

78 1/2 and up are the cheap rotors, 76-78.5 use the same rotor as the scout.

the rotor won't go on the outside of the flange, it has to go on the inside and the inside has to have a ridge turned down on a lathe to get it to sit flush. thats why I'm going with the suzuki rotor setup. I think using the chevy caliper and rotor behind the flange setup is ghetto fabulous. It makes bolting the bearing retainer on a huge pain in the ass. For wheel studs I looked through the bin at NAPA and found some longer ones

why not just cut a hole in the rotor to gain access to the bolts? Much like the drum. What is cheap on rotors, the ones I found are 40 bucks, seems cheap to me. What dosn't work about putting the rotor on the outside? Is it spaced to far out?

Thanks Eric amd coldpecker for coming out. Got some work done today: it starts (kind of), swaped out the bent tranny cross member, eight did some fine torching and adjusted the brakes. have to post up some pics tomorrow and do some more work.

Thanks to everyone that came by last night.

Eric (other than running his side business of tranny sales) exorcized the demons from my ignition switch. Coldpecker brought his mad torch skills, he finished up the rear body mounts and cut the shock mount off. we also finished the install of the new, strait tranny cross member. Coop helped to get the body mounts aligned. Brian the GF stopped by for moral support.

And of course most importantly, Jimmy and Jerry brought the beer and made sure it was consumed in a timely manner.

Got room for me to come down and do a little minor work on the 4runner at your place? I could be another pair of hands when you need it on the scout, as well.

another good day or wrenching, thanks for everyone who came out (7 tamorites). Got the body mounts finished up and figured out the brake problem (bad rear pads and a blown rear seal). Just need to finish the rear brakes tomorrow, get some nuts for the passanger seat, and I may fab up some recessed u-bolt plates.

Jackasic

heading back out there at 9 tonight, hoping to get her all finished up. Just need rear brakes, bearing pressed on the axle shaft, new retainer plate, and if time some recessed ubolt plates. Eight, you have anything going on tonight, i could use your mad torching skills.
