dana 300 rebuild question

this friend of mine rebuilt his dana 300 and forgot to put the detent balls and springs back in. I... uh I mean, he was wondering if this would cause it to pop out of gear. also, he wanted me to ask what the easiest way to get them back in was. its been so long since I, er, I mean he took it apart he forgot how he got em out. thanks for the help.

i think you have to take out the allen head set screws on the shifter forks and knock out the shift rods with a drift. that means taking out the middle gear and dealing with 70 or so roller bearings and those ****ing thrust washers that slide out whenever you try to put it back together. have fun.

you're right. it was a pain but i got er done without too much trouble. had to remove the intermediate gear and shift forks. luckily i had just put it together and the needle bearings were still "greased in place".
