This another one of my new goodies... like my makeshift cart for it... the wheel kit for it is discontinued so i just put casters on the pallet it came on... the casters are pretty bling too

Shaggy
01-10-2006, 03:57 PM
i was able to get the spacer off on the driver side with the help of the impact... but my wall came up a bit close.. the other side i got the shaft out and the lugs off the spacer but that damn spacer is on there tight and i cant get it loose. the other pic is of the detroit in the 10.25.
and one question... what socket do i use to get the rear hubs apart?

uglyota
01-10-2006, 03:58 PM
very cool
I woulda put big pneumatic casters on it though...make it easier to roll around in dirt and over cracks, also probably dampen vibrations some

Shaggy
01-10-2006, 03:59 PM
ya i thought about that too but this was a cheap (under 20$) fix for now

01-10-2006, 04:41 PM
tate there is a ratcheting lock nut tool that is made for the rear hubs, but if you wanna do it onthe cheap a flat head and a hammer will do the job.

Shaggy
01-10-2006, 07:25 PM
Got the lights welded in and the grill trimmed for the lights. it looks pretty good i guess.
poly performance called and needed me to measure the length of my inners. so i measure them from center of the u-joint and get 37" and 16" and the stubs 12.25"... are these numbers right?... i need to do a little research to make sure cause i would hate for the shafts to get here and be the wrong length

I dig the narrowing. You gonna run any fenders (inner or outer) or no?

Shaggy
01-11-2006, 02:58 AM
yes

Shaggy
01-11-2006, 02:59 AM
-outer fender if i can get the spotwelded inner out

Shaggy
01-11-2006, 04:36 PM
got the inner fenders out via airhammer... worked pretty good but my arm is now tired from the beating it took using it

Shaggy
01-11-2006, 04:40 PM
i beat the dent out of the pass fender as good as i could... it looks much better but sill really wavy... i also just set the skins up there to get an idea how it will look... they will fit the front pretty good from what i can tell but since the length of the taper the back is gonna gap some... i just want it to look halfway decent so no biggie... i just need to start bending some tube so i can get these things on for good

well yesterday i risked rolling it in the shop to get the rear axle at a good enough angle to pull the shaft without moving it to the side... it was good fun... and today i wasnt planning on going out there but got tired of doing house cleaning so i went there for 30 min. i was able to get the 10.25 hubs apart with this new tool i got... now all i need is to get me some brackets and i can throw the disc stuff on there

Shaggy
01-16-2006, 08:15 PM
well the ups guy was back again and now i have a pair of dana 60 CTMs and poly performance drive gear. I also have a dana60 detroit but they sent me the 4.56 and up one instead of the 4.10 and down. i am now faced with the decision of either sending it back and getting the right one or ordering 5.13s and a new detroit for the 10.25... i think fate is telling me to do the latter but my bank account is saying send it back... one thing that would make my decision easier is to know if anyone needs a 10.25 detroit 4.10 and down... John dont you still need one?... no pics of the new goodies because my memory card on my camera took a dump

Shaggy
01-16-2006, 08:16 PM
and to add one more thing.... CTMs are insane... they are WAY bigger than i expected and can see why they have the warrenty

I skipped my last class today and went out to the shop. I put the two t-cases together. I had to do a little grinder work to get it on but it worked great. Then I moved on to installing the new tranny cross-member bushings. All I need to get them done is some 5.5" 7/16 bolts. The 6" ones I have dont have enough thread on them. These bushings lower the tranny a little bit which is good cause i moved it up too much when i built the cross-member. I am gonna go get some bolts tomorrow from ace and then I will just need a hand or two to lift the dual cases up.

Shaggy
02-10-2006, 08:28 PM
I picked up the bolts i need today so tomorrow i should be able to make some good progress...

Shaggy
02-13-2006, 07:14 PM
more... and one of the new tranny crossmember bushings... i am going to have to build a tcase crossmember also cause that is just too heavy for that little adapter to handle

KrazyKarl02
02-13-2006, 07:20 PM
looks pretty pimp, you gonna build some sort of skid plate for it?

Shaggy
02-13-2006, 07:24 PM
ya i am gonna build a skid that works as a crossmember also

Shaggy
02-13-2006, 07:26 PM
i will take a pic next time im out there to show how low it hangs... not much... maby 2-3"... the 205 is at the same level as the 203

Shaggy
02-13-2006, 07:28 PM
I have decided to run a pillow block front driveshaft with it mounted onto the tranny crossmember where it squares down... the angle looks pretty decent and it looks good in the back too

Shaggy
02-21-2006, 06:02 PM
Learn me on driveshaft tech... i am either upgrading to 1350 or 1410 stuff mostlikely probably the 1350 stuff because of availablity and pricing... since of the front setup i am gonna have to run a 2 piece shaft with a pillow block and a cv. I can get away with not running a cv in the back but i think i might ought to. is there going to be any problem finding yokes for the axles or tcase? is there a 1350 pillow block setup available?... i am used to just splicing together what shafts i already have, but have decided that i should really get decent driveshafts

Shaggy
02-21-2006, 06:30 PM
I talked to Jesse at High Angle Driveline and he said he could do these shafts just how i explained them... so i am gonna do some more research and find everything myself and build them myself... cause i would be looking upward of 1300$ for both shafts and flanges and yokes from him... and i am gonna have to pass on that

Shaggy
02-21-2006, 06:31 PM
oh and i learned that 1350 is as big as you can go on a rear shaft to have it street legal

RCcola55
02-21-2006, 06:41 PM
i really doubt there are many cops out there the can tell a difference, but on the front y dont u just put a 1330 at the yoke in the front and and 1410 for the rest that a way u have a weak point and u wont hurt nothing else if u get in a bind

It'd be really dumb to put superior shafts and ctms in an axle then feed them with a 1330 joint.

Shaggy
02-21-2006, 08:12 PM
i agree... there are no cheap parts in my drivetrain... and i dont want the driveshafts to be too weak

stx4wheeler
02-21-2006, 08:13 PM

william_ace
02-21-2006, 08:37 PM
your ball joints are weak tate :flipoff2: just kiddin man. when you do the ujoints, whats gonna be your weakest point you think?

Shaggy
02-21-2006, 09:08 PM
the ujoints will still be the weakest point even at 1410... the shafts in the 10.25 may be weaker but i doubt it

why dont u look into getting it all done with 1410's and one of the flanges that has shear bolts in it i saw them in petersons a while back, you can change how strong it is, i mean with all that money in the axles i wouldnt wanna risk funcking **** up, maybe im just under estimating the strength of ctms and superior shafts

Expanded metal is the way I am going in the Beast. There was already a huge hole of rust, so we torched it out and gonna place some back in. Tryin to look out the bowties window at the tires is a *****. Gonna help fix that by scrapin the 11.50 38's and goin with som 20.5 44's or bigger if I can locate some portal axles. The hole let in a little mud at Alto, but gonna fix that with a heavy piece of trailer mat for a removeable floor board. Hell anything that will keep the big beast shiny side up and rubber side down will help.

ok so the pics are a little out of order but here is how the evening went. I started out by sticking in the first ctm in the stub-shaft. I now understand why the groves are machined in there... without them the thing wouldnt fit. Next I realized that I left off the rubber graumets. I proceded to take it apart and put it back together. After that I realize that the best way to put the full circle clips on is to stick them in before inserting the ctm into the shaft. So I procede to take it apart again and put it back together once again. My next step is to hook it up with the inner. This seems impossible, even though the machined area is there on that side it isnt as far. After a while of tinkering I decide to force it with a rubber mallet. It is a mirical... it works. So I finish that sucker up and start to putting in the grease fittings. I only get 3 in. I decide to not mess with the fourth till I get the other shaft complete. I go through the same procedure with the other shafts leaving out the stupidity within the first shaft and it goes together quite well. I had a little trouble getting the last circle clip to cooperate but it finally worked out. All of the grease fittings went into this ctm just fine. This may be because I didn't hit the cap with the small sledge a million times. I then moved back to the last grease fitting. I couldn't figure out how to get it in the misthreaded hole. After a million and a half failed attempts I decided to grip it with plyers and hit it with the sledge. I crammed that sucker in. I am assuming that that is the first cap I bust. Who wants to take bets otherwise. I just figured a forced grease fitting was better than not having one in there. After all that fun I decided to mess with the shifter for the transfercases. Since I raised up the tranny the kit needed a little clearancing. A little love from the sledge and the shifter is in. Well the main part is. None of the linkage is, or the boots and all that jazz. I basically did the easiest part, but it made me feel good to see them there. Another thing I did was to pull out the spicer long-side shaft. You can see a couple pics of the difference. Pictures don't do justice. Superior is the shiznit. ok that is all.

I went out to the shop today... i tinkered around with a couple things. I decided to try and hook up the t-case shifter linkage. It was a good ol time... there is a lot to that sum*****. But I did get it all in. I still need to go back and put a nut on a bolt that is like imposible to reach and replace some 5/16 bolts with 3/8 ones to kill the slack. I also might shorten the linkage to the front case shifter a inch or two. the lever is just too low for my liking. It did feel nice to actually be able to shift through all the positions... man there are a lot of them with 3 shifters. that is all for probably a couple more weeks maby months... i really need to sell some stuff... i cant even buy a dollar worth of hardware to polish up what i did today until i sell something. oye veh

Shaggy
04-09-2006, 08:10 PM
ok so i lied yesterday about not going to the shop for a long time... i went there today and installed the floor shifter. it was a pita. all i have to do to it now is trim and install the plastic cover that makes it look pretty and maby ajust the linkage a little bit. i took some pictures of both it and the tcase shifters. I will get them up later... maby tonight

worked on it a little today... I tried to fix my press but it doesnt work too well. then i bolted down the floor pan and trimmed it more for the transfercase shifters... ghettoed the boots on them and then modified the plastic cover for the tranny floor shifter... so that is down other than wiring the light on it up... but since there is no other wiring it is gonna have to wait..., I also took off the factory column shifter

I went and got new ball-joints today. I had no idea how much they cost so I asked Austin while I was talking to him. He said like $60 each (x4 = 240) and i was like hell no. well luckily he was wrong. I got new lifetime warrenty uppers and lowers for $135 after tax. I was a little more comfortable with that price.

Shaggy
06-10-2006, 02:11 PM
well when in town the other day i installed the new ball-joints. I learned that using the loaner tool from the parts store makes life 20 million times easier... wish i would have done that to get them out. i got the knuckles on and went ahead and put the whole front end together minus the center section and shafts. I was curious to see the lockouts in. they look good and dont stick out at all... it is nice. My old warn hubs stuck out like 2 inches. Next time I come to town i will buy bearings and set the gears front and rear and get that all done with. But overall I had a very productive time in cs. I spent 12 hours clearing out 1830 lbs of stuff to bryan iron ($80 in my pocket) and two bed loads to the dumpster. and I organized the remainder of the stuff along with getting the bronco in rolling condition again. I think the day was a success. That is all for now.

Last month I was in town and had about an hour to work on the bronco. I pulled the pass side rear hub off and pressed out the studs. I am now going back on the thought that I would have to grind down the hubs a lot. If I do any it is gonna be very minimal. After looking at it more the disc swap has maby 3 hours worth of work to finish it up less running the lines. I still need to order some brackets cause I really dont have time to build any. I have been working on average 65hrs a week here in SA so I don't think much progress will be made soon. After the christmas holidays I need to hit it hard though. I am planning on using the bronco for the getaway car for my wedding June 2nd. so a LOT has to go down before then. I will make it aware when I come to town if any before then. I can use as much help as you guys are willing to give me. The main work will be after January 1 though. And I will need a lot of help if I am gonna get it done by the new deadline.

Thanks

well Austin and I came into town the other day and worked on it once again. I ground down the hub and put the rotor on the side i had off and took off the other side, the gears are 95% set in the 10.25, got the pattern right and all just have to pull it apart one last time and put the new crush sleve on the pinion and press in the pinion seal and then put it back together, by the way it took a lot of shims, but i could not be happier with how it feels, I need to borrow a set of setup bearings for the 60 so i can get that sucker set up

ok, this thing has been on the back burner long enough. I would like to set a goal of getting this thing trail ready by summer 2010. We will hopefully be having a little one next summer so I know it needs to get done by then. My plan is to have 4 work weekends (about one every 3 months) where club members come to SA and stay and work on my crap with me. I will supply beer and food and a place to crash. We will set a work agenda for each of these events. I will put in some work on my own between these gatherings to insure to keep the timeline in check. I feel that the only reason that progress hasn't been made in years is because I don't like to really work on it myself, and there are a couple things that are a little above my head. I will talk to the wife about potential weekends for the first one and then get back and see what works best with the club. Who would be interested in helping out and seeing Tonka back on the trail in summer 2010?
