The programmers like Hypertech dont really do anything for those trucks, you can mess with shift points and other things but I dont think that there is any actual horsepower gain. Dont know about the chips, probably the same.

I wouldn't mess with headers either.

if you're looking for a little more power, put a k&n filtercharger system on it and a better muffler. That's about all I'd do to a daily driver. What are you planning on?

well i already have airaid intake, throttle body spacer, tranny cooler and 2 40 flows w/ 3" dumps. I want more power for when i start pulling my jeep-if ever!! after going from 32" to 33" i was lagging big time-now i get going pretty quick again. kind of want better gas mileage but when your pulling that much saving gas is not an option. mainly just want more horsepower so my truck wont crap out when pulling.

did you do that stuff piece at a time?
Did the airaid intake help? TB spacer?
My airaid intake was a total waste of money, and the spacer didn't help and is freakin annoying, but the wannabe turbo sound gets dieselboy all hot and bothered :D
is your truck 4x4 or 2x4? Gearing is about all you can do. I get 15-17 in mine with stock tires, k&N drop in, and flowmaster...maybe a little less with the ugly truck in tow

Your truck will pull an XJ just fine.

Probably because you didn't put the k&n sticker on your truck. :flipoff2:

its two wheel drive trust me i know i had trhe pleasure of pulling it out when he stuck it behind penburthy. :flipoff2:

put 31's on it thats about the best way your gonnaget better milage, and power, do a search there has been a couple threads about this in the past year, and the replies are almost the exact same.

read that thread.

put 31"s back on it and maybe go to 4.10 gears if you're really going to be pulling a lot with it. thats all you need.

uglyota-i put the intake and spacer on and about 2 months later-exhaust
my engine runs a lot cooler and i got maybe 1.5 extra miles-my truck already wines-spacer made it a little worse-i call it my supercharger!!!!
quote->my xj guards my driveway!!!

bigred-yep 4.10 is what i was thinking about going to-but i wont be pulling very often-just to runs.-how would it affect just regualar driving?

yeah thanks again for the tug stx4wheeler

BigRedFord04

as long as its an automatic it wont affect it at all driving around town. the gears will give you more power whell pulling, but you'll run higher RPMs at highway speed, so you'll get slightly worse mileage on the highway unless you slow down a bit.

big red-thats what i figured would happen-what about something a little higher like 3.73???

Just use that button that locks out overdrive for pulling. Its like having lower gears, then you can use overdrive when empty, like it was meant to be.

texasxj

dont have the button in mine-97

You mean you can't lock overdrive out?

He's got 3rd gear on the column shifter. I think that's how you lock overdrive out.

texasxj
10-25-2004, 08:37 PM
nope i have overdrive and then 1 2 3-try 3rd when towing????

do 4.10 and just don't go over 80 and you won't notice the difference. besides more torque and faster acceleration. 4.10 and 31's would probably put you a little better gearing than stock.

Fredo

just go back to stock tires or a little bit larger and tow in 3rd instead of overdrive....and make sure you have a transmission cooler. If our bone stock 350 powered van would yank a heavy ass scout around on an 18ft trailer at 70-80mph, your truck should have no problems with a cherokee. Quit worrying about your tow rig and get your cherokee mean enough to require trailer towing.

Yea. I think putting the trans in 3rd gear locks out overdrive.

before they changed the dashes in GMs to the style you have, they had 1-2-D-OD on the shifter. basically the same, but different. put smaller tires back on and tow it on a trip in 3 and see what you think....then if you think you need it drop some lower gears in it. and do make sure you have a tranny cooler. if you tow in OD it will wear out the belts inside the auto and fry your tranny just as fast as towing in the right gear w/o a cooler.

austin-i put a tranny cooler on last weekend. when i towed my jeep home the 1st time from junction to sa it kicked my butt but i was in OD.

allright thanks yall

I only have to drop mine into 3rd every once in a while when flat towing...in town and on bad hills
On the highway it's in OD locked out (not manually...I don't have that button)
did 4.10s ever come stock in a 5-lug chebby axle? If so, then just swapping rearends would be his easiest option

Eric, you probably have 3.73 gears in that z71. His is 2wd so probably 3.08 and at least as big as tires as yours.

Actually, I think most of the 2wd's got 3.42's and had an option for 3.73's and a limited slip.

Mine is 2wd with 3.42. I think that is what GM put in most of their vehicles these days. In 98 they started the RPO code in the glove box that tell you every thing you truck came from the factory with including the size of the spare tire. I only say they started in 98 cause every decoder website i've ever seen starts at 98.

THat truck should pull a jeep fine stock. I pulled brian's cruiser to alto and it did ok, you cant put it in OD on the long flat stretches but mostly in 3rd or it'll kick down everytime you hit the gas. Those trucks just arent that great for pulling especially something tall with alot of wind resistance. Just suck it up nothing you really do is gonna change it that much. Changing to 4.10 gears is just gonna make you suck more gas on a daily basis, switch back to stock tires and deal with it.
