would a truck like that be hard to fix up into a good rockcrawler?

ummm how much mechanical know how do you have? I obviously needs a front axle. I can't tell if any of the steering or front suspension is there from those pics.

Other than that, you might want gears, lockers, and bigger tires. If I could do it all over again, I would get something similar.

You'd be better/cheaper/easier to just buy this one. (http://tamor.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4818)

yeah, I couldn't tell about the steering either, I might e-mail the guy and ask. Mechanical know how...I don't have much hands on experience, yet, but usually I can figure things out with some research. Do ya'll think this might be a good rig to get started in wheeling and to get some wrenching experience? or should I just keep looking around? Also, what do you have to do if you don't plan on driving the rig on the steet and just making it a trail rig ie. registration, inspection, etc?

title only if you're not planning to drive it on the street. Mine hasn't been registered or insured since I brought it to TX and I flat tow it everywhere.
Until today, that is http://www.texasoffroad.net/albums/lonestar/album230/madgrin.gif
this would make a good starter rig, but before long you will think the wheelbase is too long, unless you make it really big. steering would be the main issue and place you will dump your money to get that sucka on the road.

i would find a little something that ran and the 4wd worked and start from there. then you can learn what it can do and go from there instead of buying someone elses project. that way you can do what YOU want to do to it!! good luck

I say buy that sucker! for $400 even if you decided you didnt want it in the end you could still get your money back out of it and probably even turn a profit selling parts. Plus the only way your gonna get some mechanical knowledge is by doing.

It is worth $400 in parts EASY. You can get a front axle for $2-400. That's a running truck. With some 44044s ($600) all the way around and hy steer ($500) and an IFS box ($200) it would be decent. That's about $2000. Not terrible for a lifted truck with fuel injection...

Alright well, I e-mailed the guy to ask more about it. It only has a day left or so on auction, so I'll bet it'll still be there in a week or so, seeing how it's gone this far. If I do anything, it'll be over spring break, hopefully he gets back to me before then. Anyone have a flatbed bumper-pull trailer in the DFW area that I might could borrow sometime spring break to go and pick this thing up if I decide it's a go?

hmm well, that was a short run and it's already a no...the parental figure said that if I still wanted to live there over the summer and call it home then I'd should better pass...not exactly, but pretty darn close. I don't know why, but my dad's under the impression that every vehicle you buy should be brand spankin new....guess I'll just have to go buy one and ram it into a tree a couple of times :) maybe then he'll see it my way. Until then, I'm gonna have to pass on this toy, it's still up for grabs for like a day I think.

Just do some bolt on stuff to your Ford in the meantime, good way to learn and you will still have a place to call home. If nothing else stay involved with the club and after you get out and make fat cash you will know what to do.
