View Full Version : How Much Does it REALLY Cost?

I know this is the pot calling the kettle black, but please don't clutter this thread up with discussion, just let people post their info.

Sometimes on these rigs there are thousands of dollars in them, and they still look like poo. Post up your itemized list of mods and a ball park figure of what it cost you. This might help people see what it really costs to build one of these rigs. Include major overhauls of major parts like engine or tranny rebuilds, but not oil change type crap. I am going to include the wrong paths I took as well, such as lift springs, when I went to springover later, and had to repurchase stock springs because I threw away the original ones :(

(Chadnuts you can just attach an excel file if you like) :)

Fred feel free to do this with your camaro instead.

'79 Scout, great condition, stock everything, lots of miles, pretty paint, just a small amount of rust, kickass boat winch and 400 lb bumper abortion on front. -,$4,000

Driveshafts-original front was from Tom woods, had another front one since then, and modification of the rear one, let's underestimate at ~$500
optima yellow top $120

That's  $11,685 and I am sure I am forgetting some stuff.
That is why it is important to research things and listen to people that have done it before kids. I figure around $1600 can be deducted from the total from wrong paths, but I said to include it to give an accurate investment.

For Sale: '79 Scout over $11,000 invested, will take $10,500...:)

This also doesn't include the $800 in DOM I have laying in the shop waiting to be bent into a jungle gym.

wrong paths included? I'm probably hovering around 20k in the cj, but I've had it for 8 years so thats not hard to do.

Scout is probably right at the 2k mark if you include tires.

I haven't even attempted to figure what I have in the Scout. I've filed the receipts away for warranty purposes, and that is all. I don't even want to think about how much I've spent on it...I find it's better to remain blissfully ignorant.

:D

EDIT: Is this the sort of clutter you're trying to avoid Jimmy? :flipoff2:

Well lets see.

$800 jeep.
$200 rebuild motor.
$150 weber and headers.
$100 clutch parts.
$400 body work.
$100 chrome wheels
$380 new 33s.
$100 shocks.
$50 pitman arm.
$80s new seals and misc d30 parts.
$220 radiator.
$10 retube rear driveshaft
$200 axles
$250 seals, brakes. etc.
$75 SSRs
$80 steering
$100 body bushings.
$120 marine CD player.
$50 to swap in 435
$50 motor + $50 seals and misc.
$175 motor + $200 for injection, ignition, etc.
$100 dual electric fans and controller.
And an extra grand for all the little stuff I try to forget about.

Things I've sold.
33s on chrome wheels $500. Yes more than it cost for fullwidths and swampers.
d30 parts $60, an 18 pack of coors, and 2 meals.
Misc peices from 3 258s, $300 on ebay.
Weber $125

So somewhere around $4000.

Hmm, where's all the costs for gears, lockers, driveshafts, springs, cage, wheels, more tires, exhausts, bumpers? And why so many motors?

Yall might need to deduct stuff that you have sold off of your vehicle.

For Ex:

Fred - subtract $150 for selling your TBI motor to your old buddy BDR :D

That brings it to only $20830. That should make you feel a little better about it.

I'll work my costs up later....gotta study for a physics exam

from the Patrol Cost thread:
I added up all the receipts (I kept them ALL)
Parts Stores: $714.93
Hardware stores: $481.46
Paint, Muffler shop, Driveshaft, windshield: $555.94
Steel: $796.25 (LOTS leftover)
Speciality Shops: $1854.56, this includes jhonny joints, Dzus fastners, fuel cell, knuckle rebuild kit, rock ram, line lock, wheel spacers, LED and front lights, antenna, and wire harness
Dealers: $258.80 - includes gearbox rebuild kit and spare front axle shaft
Misc: $863.60 - includes engine rebuild, SS bolt bin, hood hinges, spare front shafts, and treated Birfields
Race Shops: $516.90 - switches, gauges, seatbelts, rubber
Junkyards: $980 - front axle, rear axle, shocks, seats, coils, column, motor mounts

TOTAL for all that: $7022.44
This total includes every nut and bolt used, the majority of supplies like grinding discs, plasma cutter tips, welding wire, sandpaper, tape, oil, filters, solder, wire, crimps - EVERYTHING.

add in registration and inspection: $7090.78
add in tubing bender, flare tool, and a few more supplies: $7725.83

What did I reuse??? engine with a rebuild, tranny and t-cases, radiator, tires and wheels, front line lock, air system less fittings, clutch master, brake booster, clutch slave, rear discs, tires and wheels. Pretty much everthing else is new.

Adding in the reused stuff: ($3455 total)
$300 engine and tranny
$1200 Marlin Crawler dual t-case setup
$100 used radiator
$1400 tires and wheels
$60 front line lock
$100 air filter and pressure switch
$40 clutch master
$40 brake booster
$15 clutch slave
$200 rear discs

COMPLETE Total with re-used stuff AND special tools:
$11,180.83
EDIT: add $420 for the body ($500-$80 for selling the rolling chasis)
$11,600.83

and that is truely with everything - masking tape and plastic for the paint job, all welding supplies, all gas used, all grinding discs bought - EVERYTHING.

Been wheeling it hard for a few years now - spent about $500 redoing the rear 4 link and that's about it.

I cleped that from car tuners, some acronym for car radios. I have put in two Sony head units and some speakers - only thing not stolen was the speakers.

not only is that gay, I still don't know what it stands for. Imports Crap-out Easily?

Busa you forgot that axle we bought, but I guess you cleared a few hundred on that, so nevermind. However, everytime you go out you explode something, how about a special subsection for broken parts replacement :) Chadnutz I seem to remember at least two different sets of axles you were going to use before deciding on toy ones, but I guess if you sold them it doesn't count. Brandon all I could think about on yours that you missed was the original kumho's (which you sold, so...) and your seats, they may have came with a car, but that doesn't make them free. ;). Scott did your high dollar Shocks come from the junkyard? (maybe they aren't as expensive as I thought they were) and does that count the one you tweaked in Cruces? C'mon Andy face the music and post up, I bet you can't beat the camaro ;) Burris I don't see your ****pile on here yet :) Here is on for Lissa since I am sure she won't ever get around to it.(take the total and double it if you want the cost of Troy's TJ) :) this is tongue in cheek mostly b/c I am not sure what she paid exactly for everything.

that car was bought and sold so they were free to me. As for the Kumhos!, i sold them for what I had in them, so no gain there. Thumper orginaly came with some 30" retreads.

Maybe you should add in the cost of all the alcohol we went through sitting on the bench seat on the front porch watching that truck "put itself together"

I'm going to forget a whole lot of stuff, but I'll try to play Jimmy's little game anyway. This will probably just be the major things...and the prices are all guesses, I think any money spent has been blocked out of my memory.

Initial cost of Jeep in '99: 10K
new clutch and shop install: ~400
new clutch slave cylinder and high pressure line: ~100
tinted windows: free (insurance replacements)
Husky floor mats: ~100 (sold on ebay for ~50)
AR767s: ~150
alternator: ~100 (after Shiloh bath)
starter: ~100 (same)
Optima: ~150
hardtop: 750
1st engine rebuild: 1500
2" ProComp lift: ~200
Rancho shocks for lift: ~125
(both later sold for 150?)
33" Mud Kings from Jerry 100? (sold with wheels for 175)
33" BFGs from someone: ?
black wheels: ?
fixing old engine: about 1K for all new sensors and some new internal parts
fuel pump: 100 (6th one is in tank now, but the tank is on the shop floor)
4" ProComp lift: 250? (sold for the same)
big coils: 75
suspension mods: ~750 when it was all done
36" TSL/SXs: 500
SM465: 75
wrecked suburban mess I got in to: ~800 after buying Sawzall blades
(scrapped for ~100, sold parts for another ~250 or so)
Advance Adapter off ebay: 120
Novak motor mounts ~150
motor parts: 250?
head rebuild: 125
Centech harness: 275

I'll remember more if I think about it, but that brings the total into the ballpark of 18K, about 17K if you take away the junk I've sold. I'd guess that if I actually kept track of everything it'd be a lot more than 20K, but I don't feel like depressing myself that much.

So, remember kids, you too can have the body of a Jeep (with no motor, tranny or t-case) sitting on an oddball suspension with slightly better than stock axles and a pile of parts that need a lot of assembly and a WHOLE lot of time for about $20000...

Offer me $10K for it and you'll be seven years ahead of all your friends, and only out half the money. :(

i dont feel like going through it all and it seems my excel sheet for the engine swap is toast but ill try:

$4000- initial purchase
-$600- sold old drivetrain
$3600- LT1, 700r4, dana 300 swap
$3400- all the stuff in my build-up thread
-$300- sold lift springs

thats $10100 to the best of my memory but i bet if i go back through all my receipts it'll be closer to 13 or so. maybe if i get bored ill expand on it.
