Does it matter what fluid I should with my detroits??? does it need to be synthetic???

no. and if you are using new gears definitely don't use synthetic...gears won't break in properly. gl5 or 90 wt will be fine. you don't need any special additive either. if you plan on doing any water crossings and don't like to spend money, nix the synthetic all together b/c it makes for an expensive oil change. I personally like the stuff in my street cars. have actually noticed the gears to be quieter on an older set when I changed over. replaced all my fluids(tranny, diffs, t-case, engine oil) in my Dad's range rover to syn. and picked up 3 MPG---it was expensive and not really worth the cost, but that is telling you that there is less friction and it last longer...probably never have to change the diffs forat least 50k miles. land rover now uses syn on their new trucks and says it's good for 90k miles. that tells you something on the oils specs.
