View Full Version : 1998 F-150 4.2l

Here's some pictures from the past week of swapping a busted 4.2l with a "newer" one.

1st pic: putting the engine and tranny back on the truck. kinda like fitting a oversized pos square peg into an undersized round hole (i know some comment will somehow relate to this)

2nd pic: jeff gig em when we're pulling the tranny/engine combo

3rd pic: me gig em

4th pic: jeffs tailgate, about the tear the thing down.

5th pic: found the problem, broken connecting rod on one of the center pistons, and leakage of coolant into the cylinders. rusted cylinders as well.

anyone got a ac condensor for a f150 they wanna get rid of:)?

nice. you call that a leak? what did the head look like? thats a good way to lose a toe.

did ya'll scrub each others backs when you got done?

The head was fine. We checked for dents and dings from the piston but everything seemed fine. The push rods seemed fine too. But the lower part of the connecting arm around the crankshaft area Jeff said it had been rounded off quite a bit, which led him to think the connecting rod had been broken for quite a while.

Eric would be proud of your correct use of the Somonan safety sandles

One of the rockers was a little loose, even though we tightened it to the right torque setting. Jeffs dad said it could be the lifter needed some oil to get it to sit right, havent fired it up yet so we don't know exactly, but what do yall think?

I didn't have any foot injuries, but I did have a run in with the frame when I dropped a wrench. It left a nice cut on my forehead

hey look at me. i drive a P.O.S. ford that i cry about all the time, but right now im bragging about it because it cost a lot of money. that means its cool right? if my sexy poser shot by my other P.O.S. ford with the engine dangling and my shirt off didnt impress these guys then this surely should, right?

is that all you guys got? the engine is a good idea when it works that is. if anyone has ever driven a 6l, they know its a fun engine to drive in- its got great pickup, as long as it works as it should. But i would like to know how a rear end accident can cause an oil leak? Has anyone ever known someone to be re ended at 30-40mph and have it crack the engine? I even slid with the train, just kinda gracefully glided if you must:)

30-40 mph by a train is a little different than 30-40 mph by a miata. theres this thing called mass...

KE=1/2mv^2
therefor: if a miata weighs in at 1 ton and a 100 car train weighs in at 10,000 tons, then there is 10,000 times more kinetic energy in a train than a miata at the same speed.

a few simple physics calcs results in a force from the train impact being around 14000 lbs and from a miata a scant 2800 lbs, but the miata calcs were oversimplified so the force would actually be significantly less than that.

i can definately see it causing a cracked engine since all the stuff behind it is shoved up into it.

you know, i even defended you there for a while but this is getting ridiculous and way to hard to not partake in.

well the engine is evidently in there so does this thing run or what?

don't you think it would have cracked at a mount? I'm not saying the truck perfect after the wreck, but I would think it would have drivability issues, not engine problems unless it was apparent like a cracked mount.

he's fine in my book... but i dont dislike many people... well i dont like fat chicks... almost none of 'em

jwingfield2k
07-17-2005, 09:42 AM
i dont like fat chicks either. no cracked engine mount, just bent the end of the frame. and well obviously they put a new frame on there, so driveability issues are thrown out the window due to that, and new crossmembers and driveshafts, shocks, yada yada. Its hard to beleive that caused the leak, when this leak is common in 99% of these engines with a build date of April 2003 from the Kentucky plant.

Tate: No it doesnt run yet, we still need to put in oil, tranny fluid, connect some hoses, put on fan. but the engine mounts are in, and the block is bolted down to them. I'm coming into college station tonight hopefully to finish the engine. One lifter isnt sitting right, and the steel fuel line that runs along the top of the engine is a little bent at one of the injectors, so I've gotta make sure those two things function right. We'll see.
