Are you sure about those dates? That's the middle of the week. I was thinking of going the 13th or 14th. Maybe you were looking @ september.

My brother in law is coming back the preceding week from a tour in Afghanistan, and he has been itching to go wheeling and for once my truck has a decent chance of being running at the same time he is on leave. He is only in TX for a week or so, so it pretty much has to be that weekend if I am going to be able to take him. I'm down for Alto, Gilmer, or anywhere else we can make a (long) day trip out of.

I'm in, pending functional steering

or 4 messcan' manual steerers & a lot more zip ties.

Seriously though, Eric & I are going to be working on replacing my knuckle and converting to Hi-steer at my place on Saturday if anybody wants to join the fun.

I may be able to swing by and show you'll how to rebuild that greasy pig we call a yota axle, but I gotta work graveyards this weekend, so I may not be able to stay long. Where are you'll gonna be at? And since eric seems to be a wheelin fool, how about trying to make a trip to gilmer a week before school starts. I gotta repair the fire damage and rebuild my front end, but hopefully I will be ready by then

We'll be @ my house, probably starting mid-morning (the earlier the better because of the heat - me thinks).

Chris, did you ever get your rear driveshaft shortened?

8Runner
08-02-2005, 02:23 PM
No, I was planning on evening out the suspension before doing it. The ass end is drooping a bit and should improve the situation. Did we ever figure out if it was actually hitting?

That was what I saw. Whenever you were crawling up a section at tcc, I saw your axle moving forward, and when it did you PS pump pulley would grind. You didn't have but 1/2" or so for the driveshaft to be able to compress while the truck was at camp, so I'm pretty sure that was the problem.

My motor mount bushing were broken out and that was causing it to hit whenever the engine got torqued - perhaps the driveshaft bottoming out broke the mounts? Regardless, when we clamped down the mounts, the problem went away, at least for the short term.

Regardless, if it was hitting then I should shorten it. How do I tell how much? Anybody know how this affect the Tom Woods lifetime warranty deal? I think someone reccomended Bryan Drivetrain, so perhaps I could even get it done by the Alto trip.

We can take it easy going up there. I tow because my shiznit breaks more often than it doesn't.

take it off and measure yoke to yoke. then take it to whomever you choose and tell them thats what it needs to be.

And they make that measurement the new midpoint? It is a long travel shaft, does that make any difference?

StevenAg03
08-03-2005, 01:21 PM
the length needs to be the midpoint if you have equal uptravel and downtravel. on the otherhand, most rigs have more downtravel then up....

uglyota
08-03-2005, 01:29 PM
I really don't think you should need a lot of travel on the rear shaft. We could run your winch under the rear axle and to the bumper, cinch it down and measure yoke to yoke, or just jump on the back and guess how much needs to come off, add an inch to that, and go after it with the chopsaw and grinder. (Unless you really want to pay to have it done)

I'd say just give it to BVD on 2818 or Bryan Drivetrain on S College and let them fix it for ya. BVD may not do it cause of the toyota yoke on one end (axle has a flange right?) Measure for yoke to yoke (or yoke to flange) like john said. I'm not sure if they make that a midpoint for travel or what, but if it's a longtravel shaft you should have no problem anyway.

It's a toy yoke at the diff and a chevy at the xfer case. I think I'll do the measurements while we are working on the front axle this saturday then take it to BVD next week.

Now that this thread has been totally hijacked - who's going to Alto, damnit?

Does anyone want to go if we go there?

Another consideration might be the weather. I heard it gets really sloppy when it rains. There is only a slight Thursday - Saturday - if it doesn't rain, will it dry out by then?

I don't know much about this place, but because my brother in law couldn't catch a plane out of turbin-land he can't stay as long. That kills a full day trip to Alto or Cibolo because of the drive.

Anyway, you don't have to change destinations just for me - especially if the place sucks. But it would be really cool if I could talk him out wheeling with a small group while he is here.

this 47 place is off highway 47, but I don't think anything's happening this weekend. Too much going on. Maybe next weekend? Post up if you're interested

Was leaving my apt today, and a guy working for the carpet cleaners working next door starting talking to me about the place on 47. He says they've been trying to get more people out there, said that they now have liability insurance I believe, and said to see pics go to www.photobucket.com and search for Tx4WD, and Tx4WD-Dodge. He said if we wanted to go out there, to call 979-696-6867 and ask for Jason.

Just replaced my starter, so I'm up for this weekend or next. :gigem:

EDIT: And also they're having a Meet and Greet on Aug-26-28 out there, $10 per person per day, or $25 for the entire weekend (includes camping). They're supposed to have food, etc. out there..

I may go out there the weekend before school starts, or perhaps someplace cooler, if I get as much done on the buggy in the next few weeks as I hope to. Gonna need to do a test run before school gets going again. Is the place on 47 ever opened during the week?

8Runner
08-13-2005, 08:44 AM
I'm still game for going somewhere close today. If the whole place is a sloppy mess then it's not worth it, but if there are even a few cool parts, then I would like to go for an hour or two and take my brother in law.

no time to take the ugly truck out before school?

btw, i almost bought a 70 land cruiser yesterday when we were out setting up deer stands on some new land. drove by it and made pops stop so i could check it out, lady whose husband owns it ended up comming out of her house to run errands while we were looking so she went and grabbed the keys. started right up after a prime and ran pretty damn good for a 36 yo vehicle. Old man winter from across the street came over to tell us some about it since he drove it at one point in time and it only had 60K on it. Long story short, 3 on the tree was pretty cool and im poor.

JeepPhisherman

didnt make 60s in 1970 did they?

anyway, the lady said he was asking 2600 for it, but they were friends with the guy who we were leasing land with so she said if i really wanted it, i could take it for 1800 depending on what her husband said. I talked with my dad about it for a while, but I couldnt justify spending that on something that needed a lot of work to be trailable, plus I dont really have a place to work on it seeing as how i live in an apartment complex that will fine you just for washing your truck in the parking lot.

its a shame though, the body was in pretty decent shape, just some rust holes in the rear fender and some surface rust on the frame, but i got my dad started on zukes and he sounds like he's pretty interested, maybe even enough so to buy me an old beater to work on at home over xmas break
