Well, got some questions so figured I'd make a thread.

Project Kurt Jeep starts as your basic YJ with a 4.0 and a 5 speed. It has stock axles with mismatched gears, 4" lift, 3" body lift, and new 35" mud kings. Modifications will include a 44 and a 14 bolt and a d300 as well as some additions to the stock cage.

So, now it's in the collecting parts and planning stage. What we have is a ford leaf sprung LP d44 with flat tops that will get high steer, 4.88 gears, special u-joints, and remain open. And a 14 bolt that will get 4.88 gears, a detroit, and disc brakes. We will use some caddy calipers from my front porch but not sure what discs to use as my front porch is 6 lug. Jimmy, you remember what caddy they came from? Or know if they're the big ones or the little ones?

Now for the d300, we need one. Anybody got? Maybe call Freddy at work soon. The flipping part looks easy enough. Anybody know how to put a CV driveshaft on the back of one with junkyard parts? And what to do about a speed sensor?

Suspension is supposed to be leafs from my springs with toyodie mains SOA. Guess I should get to building my suspensions then. Body lift will be leaving. Wheels are of the H2 variety, and if anybody finds a deal on some 35-37" tires for 17s let me know.

You might try to find a Cherokee front driveshaft... Easy to find and it's a 1310 CV.

...as my front porch is 6 lug...

Really? B*tchin'! :flipoff2:

Know anything about a cherokee yoke fitting on a d300? Real cherokee or XJ?

OK I did some searching. Turns out either one of them has the yoke and cv to work.

So now, any of yall got a driveshaft and yoke from the front of one of these?

OK I did some more searching. The VSS from the 231 bolts onto the d300.

I have a Cherokee front driveshaft, but it cost me more than its worth so I don't really want to sell it at Pollack price.

Check junkyards, there are a shat-ton of wrecked Cherokees around, so just pull the shaft and yoke at the same time.

XJ, not the old school big cherokees

i did not know about the VSS. i wonder if i can use that? whats the frequency of the signal in pulses per driveshaft rotation? i need 40. what vehicle would this be from?

a guy on fullsize made one that was really pimp for a vss, will find later for you if you need it.

The yj vss has a gear on it just like an old cable speedometer, so its got some variability by changing gears if its close to what you need

me thinks that'll only give 4 pulses per rev.

jagsthatrun.com has a bunch of vss stuff. all the speedo driven ones are only 4 pulses/rev. they've got a diff mounted one for obdII stuff that im thinking of adapting to my d300.

So, gears and locker are installed. High steer arms and clocking ring supposed to be ordered today. TJ flares are on. 37s are mounted. A cherokee rear driveshaft will be aquired wednesday. The d300 flipping has started. Need to finish that and get the axles put together soon. Then we will see just how quick this stuff can be installed. I guessing a weekend and a day later once the rear driveshaft is made and whatever stupid little parts aquired.

Here's the problem. Apparently ford couldn't figure out what to do with brakes on 44s. There are 3 different calipers available for a ford 44 of this vintage. Tried all 3 and then noticed that some more caliper bracket stuff was needed. The calipers needed are over $100 each. It would be one of those go to the parts counter and bend over things, but the caliper brackets would have to be found in a junk yard and are rather rare. The plan was to use 3/4 ton chevy rotors and build some mounts similar to what you would use on a rear axle. But then came a brilliant idea (this just a minute ago). There's a perfectly good d44 of the chevy persuasion sitting by a fuel tank near the other jeep parts piles. We will put it's outers on the ford 44. Then part out the rest of the chevy 44 and the 8 lug and flat top parts from the ford 44.

kopecki on the 8 lug stuff im interested in taking it. but if the brake stuff is a mess then no

Well, I'm thinking you might can use your brake brackets and stuff with them. The spindle bolts onto the knuckle with 5 bolts. We'd have to check the rotor diameters. You'd really just have to take them and then pay me if it works, or give them back if not.

theyll be for my 78 44 of course. wont be able to play with the stuff till kevin gives me the 44. i guess ill get the stuff when we meet over cmas break. im thinking since a 44 and 10 bolt are the same then i could use the calipers that i will have and just use the rotors and shafts etc. but dont know if the calipers bolt up the same on a 44 and a 10b. no idea really

i have plenty of 44 stuff... both regular ford and ttb ford

hey kopecki 78 ford bronco calipers for a dana 44 are 10.15 a piece at advanced, maybe you should try to make these work.

Aggies do not cheat, steal, or lie.

Tried those calipers. Maybe if we had the brackets that go with them.

So this jeep showed up yesterday with a d44hd and 14 bolt in a receiver hitch basket that was almost on the ground.

No got pic.

I guess the 35s and wheels are up for sale now. Should have a yj lift and some other yj parts available soon.

Got the d300 and 14 bolt in. To get the right clocking, we had to turn the clocking ring around and retaper the holes it bolts to the transfer case with. Also removed the d300 input seal with a band saw. Stock skid plate works. Kurt made some fancy shifters that go around the driveshaft and to the shift rails that are on the bottom of this now upsidedown case.

It sits kinda like you'd expect a jeep with SOA and a 3" body lift to. 12" between fender flare and 37" tire. Its hardly wider though.

don't 300s have oiling issues when they're upside down?

eight
01-14-2006, 12:04 AM
This one has no oil. Its just gears and ball bearings, whatever gear oil gets splashed around should be fine. Haven't decided how full to fill it yet.

Got the d44 in, drive shafts, shocks, brakes and some stuff done today. Still need to build the drag link and a few other things I'm sure I'm forgetting about. Won't put the d300 shifters on untill the body lift is removed.

The front sits 2" lower than the back. So maybe add another leaf to the front and shorten the rear shackles.

It's supposed to be ready for its first wheeling. Finally got the brakes working right, it needed a bigger master cylinder. Besides that he removed the body lift a few weeks ago, and changed some shackles and leafs around to level it. He's been having problems with some sort of open bolt hole in the t-case adapter leaking oil out of the transmission but I think he finally got that plugged.

Well, the kid found a good deal on a tj and bought it. So this one's soming up for sale soon.

Sweet, any plans yet?

eight

He plans to do nothing with the tj, besides a new soft top. But it does have 3.73 gears and a 44 rear, so I'll talk him into a 4" lift and 35s and some drop in lockers.
