View Full Version : A Gypsy Wagon Summer

A summer internship with GE afforded me a great many things this summer - new tires and wheels, a serpentine conversion, dual alternators, and more power.

37" BFG mud terrains are on back order, but Todd said he's working on it.

A serpentine belt accessory system gets me dual 105 amp alternators, a 130 gpm water pump, a big ass Dmax engine fan, and a few other late style parts that I just haven't been able to afford lately.

A new injection pump and injectors should make for about 275 hp and 500 lb-ft at the flywheel. I think that an intercooler will be in the works depending on how quickly I can peg this boost gauge.

Pics pending.

What ended up happening with the stolen serpentine setup? Why you going dual alternators?

The stolen serpentine setup - reordered; claimed with DHL. Alternators - two are better than one. Missa Stafford - he's already back in CS. When is the SEC career fair?

Started the engine this morning. It runs with a slight miss, but that's normal for a fresh pump and injectors. I'll have to do a full bleed of each line to get it, and I'm out of time. Heading to CS now. I still have to time it, wire in the alternators, charge the AC, and get it rolling.

Lots of progress this weekend. Got the tires on, Bilstein 5100s installed, fine tuned the modified belt routing, Dmax 21" fan in OE shroud, and solved miss at idle. I still have to time it, get to a leaky injector line AN fitting and tighten it, wire in the alternators, get center caps modified and installed, and run AC lines.

Doubt I'll make too many runs this semester.

New tires.

Holy crap! How long is the belt?

AgDieseler
09-12-2005, 10:50 PM
Thanks guys. It's pretty skinny, but I'm ready for a change from what the 35s were. 3.5" to 5.5" BS is going to take some getting used to.

'nother from the front:

Doug, that belt is 120.3" long.

To get the shock valves positioned for the rear, I need to remount the tabs on the axle a little lower. I was thinking of these. What to y'all think?

looks good..I like skinny tires! as for the mounts how about a cut a piece of cardboard to use as a template and then find a plasma cutter on campus.

I saw a set powdercoated black, and they were sweet. It just wasn't in the budget. :( Then again, I've run black wheels for five years. It's time for something different.

so, are you gonna cut out for the front hubs? will the centers cover the rear?

AgDieseler
09-18-2005, 09:42 PM
Centers cover the rear just fine. ~4.5 hole is enough to clear a 60 hub just past the chrome. I'll get some pictures when I get back to Dallas in a few weeks.

AgDieseler

Wow. I didn't get back to Dallas at all this last semester, so this is the first progress in a few months.

Timed it - went down from waaaaay advanced (it sounded like it was going to fly apart)
Fixed the miss - leaky injector line at the pump
Fine tuned the fuel rate at 71 mm^3 (that's a lot for a 6.2L and good for 450ish lb-ft :gigem: )
Wired in both alternators - two charging loops; 1 alternator per battery
Trying to order new driver seat...

Next is replacing the sheared bellhousing bolt, general maintenance, wash off the bird ****, and put some miles on it.

Ordered a pair of these:
http://store.yahoo.com/racing-seats/90000.html

Truck runs smooth with lots more power. The mud terrains aren't much louder than than the old all terrains. The truck rides better - Bilstein 5125s are the ****. Working on center caps for the wheels today.

Off a W/T trim truck, so they're silver instead of chrome. They match the H2 wheels pretty well.

in a couple weeks spend some time walking around the parking lot... im sure you could find some somewhere

AgDieseler
01-07-2006, 09:12 PM
John. I got these on ebay. Stroke of luck I guess. I have an extra one that I made as a pattern if you'd like to borrow it whenever you find a set. Basically, cut 3/8" depth off the bottom, and cut the feet even with the surrounding bracing. I cut out a 4.5"ish hole for the hub. It's all 'bout the Dremel.

I have two Gorilla lugs on each wheel, so the appropriate black covers are PVC glued in place on the center cap.

Sharpe
01-07-2006, 09:22 PM
Gorilla lugs? I was gonna ask what you did lug-nut wise, since the later models with the screw on plastic lugnut covers were metric, but your earlier junk is standard.

AgDieseler
01-07-2006, 09:59 PM
You can buy the fancy external thread lugs with in 9/16 - 18 thread on ebay. Gorilla lugs are lockuts that keep honest people from stealing by wheels 'n tars.

how much did you end up paying for the center caps, david?

AgDieseler
01-12-2006, 10:56 AM
I paid $45 shipped. I also picked up an extra pair for an experimental/prototyping set for $20 shipped (I didn't want to screw up the nice four).

I think the factory wants $50 per cover!
