I've seen some 12" shock hoop kits for toys for like $45. They come in pieces so they're customizable. I'll find the link if you want.

Thing is if I have to modify them at all I might as well just build them myself. Unless I'm missing something they shouldn't take to long to build.

One piece of bent tubing with the ends notched and short pieces of tube welded on perpendicular to the bent piece.

That's pretty much all it is, just gives you all the pieces already cut to save time and add some bling.

I figured $45 was worth the time it would take to fab/cut all the pieces plus the cost of the metal.

Thats the BTF kit, not the cheapest, but it's still not bad @ $60, especially if you're going to have to pay $~3/ft plus $10 shipping, which puts you at 40 without the shock mounting tabs and hardware.

Hmm doesn't look to bad, but I'm not sure it will be long enough. I'm going to have to cut inner fenders to make room for the height. I'll check it out in the day.

I'll leave cutting the tabs out to the edm!

Now is one of those times I wish I had a pipe die...

Ok I'm not paying $4 a foot for 1.25" tubing. I'm going to call around houston and check prices, if I can't find anything decent I'll just make it out of 1.75" tubing and have a larger radius.

I found one of my long travel shocks which has a 14" travel. I know I have another one but god knows where it is. the other shock I have measures 10ish in length. I jacked up one side of the blazer until the tire was off the ground and it looks like I have about 6" of travel from ride height to full droop on one side. Looks like I need to find another long shock.

Yeah, thanks again. I think that tank is too nasty to use. It's got varnish on the inside and I don't feel like messing with it.

Yeah, make my own, thats why I wanted 1.25" tubing... Probably just going to use 1.75". I would just buy that BTF kit, but it wouldn't work on the drivers side with the steering shaft in the way.

His ram is not long enough to push it around that far.

I think he should set it up with out the pump and quit being a puss about it. He is a big boy he can bend that tubing.

Doug Krebs

To reply to all of the above non-sense...

I am making my own hoops... Garrett just suggested using the BTF kit to save time, since it wasn't that much more money to just buy the kit.

I have 1.25" and 1.75" dies...

The bender works at the moment, but it has bent arms and I'm not using my own pump.

Mike, I don't think you understand how the bender works. With one shot I can bend 90* right now. If I repin the die, it can go past 180* but you won't be able to take the tubing out of the die. Both my dies are 240*dies.

After the clayton trip, I'm building new arms out of 3/4" or something similarly silly. The new design will also bend much further in one shot, probably around 125 or so.

looks like 1.75 because thats what I have laying around. To get 1.25 I'd have to order it and have it shipped.

No one in this town that I'm aware of carries any kinda tubing in stock.

I never thought about that but whats the point of making dies over 180 degrees if you cant get the piece out after its bent? Is there some kind of trick to it?

Well it has to be a little over 180 for spring back. Other than that, maybe material needs to be there for a hole to pin the die? I don't have one in front of me so I can't tell if thats the case.

Pioneer's not a new company. I know I checked prices with them years ago and I don't think we ever bought anything from them in the metal building business. But they should have a real pipe yard instead of these other little **** places we have here so they'll probably have better prices. They'll also carry reject pipe if yall would need any for building fences and such. My prediction is that they won't have this "tube" you want. Last I went by there they didn't have much in stock, but they could have hauled alot in by now.

Ok... gas tank is done, along with the modified sending unit.

Shock towers are built, I just need to make some mounting plates to weld them to and then bolt them on. Then I need to make some tabs on top of the towers for the top of the shock. Hopefully I get that all done tommorow afternoon.

When I get back on saturday I need to finish up a few things to hopefully make it to 47 on sunday.

Install gas tank and figure out a way to hold it quickly for 47. Possibly with ratchet straps if I don't have time to modify the metal straps.

-Weld yoke onto drive shaft.
-Install inner fenders.
-Replace rear u-joint
-Bolt bump stops
-Quick alignment

After 47 testing I'd like to get the hydro assist done. Also, need to get a solenoid for the winch and tidy up the wiring. Rocklights would be nice too, but not mandatory.

Edit: Opps forgot pictures. I finally used the bender for myself and had fun!

Doug Krebs
11-26-2006, 10:33 PM
So I started it up to take it on a test drive before I finished up a few things before I figured out how to get it to 47. Well I start to see some smoke so I look underneath and see gas dripping on the exhaust pimp. Well the braided fuel lines up by the front have rotted also, so that killed 47.

Got the hoops all finished up and the shocks mounted. Hung the gas tank up by ratchet straps until I redo the metal straps. The gas tank is almost flush with the frame.

I'll get the minor details finished up this week and then make a run to 47. :gigem:

Super it drives much better now with shocks. Drove it around the block, but I need to do an alignment as the steering was a little crazy. Didn't want to go to far as I know one of the u-joints in the rear is bunk.

Edit: How do ya'll normally do alignments? I think the last time I used two pins and measured from across the front, then rotated and measured across the back. I think I set the front about a 1/4" less than the rear?

eight
11-28-2006, 08:38 PM
I set the front at 1/8" less than the rear. I just measure to the same spot on the tread. Your way would be more accurate because the tread may not be straight. Too much toe in gets me the death wobble.

Ok glad I made it to 47, figured out what I need to fix and I had fun. Also I got seat time which I haven't had in a while.

So here's what I need to fix:

Steering. Sometimes it worked well, sometimes I couldn't turn at all. I plan on putting in a new pump as this one whines and is quite cranky. It's life time warrantied so why not. I plan on rebuilding the box, I found a website about a rebuild, doesn't look to bad. Anyone ever done this? I'll probably tap the box while I have it out, but just put plugs in it as I probably won't have enough time to do ram assist.

Bumpstops/limiting straps. These springs are annoyingly soft. They droop so much that the top of the spring hit the tie rod on the passenger side. They also compress so much that driver side spring hit the pitman arm.

Plan on ordering these bumpstops today. bumpies (http://jbccoffroad.com/21ta41lex21w.html)

Also, I'm going to make new spring plates so the bump stops have a big, flat area to come in contact with. I'm also going to reinstall the overloads while I have all this crap out.

For limiting strap someone said get a seatbelt and sew it up. I think that sounds good or I could sacrafice a tie down strap. I'd just have to make some ends with a loop for the strap and a bolt hole. I'd probably take them to an upholstrey (sp?) shop to get sewn.

I broke the conversion u-joint within a minute of locking in a hub. I never even gave it any gas, I was just idling up one of those washed out cracks. The tires should have easily slipped on that wet ground before the joint gave out. I'm guessing it must have been defective. At any rate I'm ordering a 1350 pinion yoke for the D60.

How about u-joints. Where can you get them without the zerk fitting?

Also, how about u-straps (Edit:U-bolts, the ones that go throught the yoke and bolt behind)? Last year I just bought them in the help section. I found some on an old yoke, and they were fine thread and looked alot beefier than the help section ones. Anyone know where to get the beefy ones?

I think thats it... Should be good for clayton with those modifications.

eight
12-04-2006, 10:10 AM
You talking about straps or u-bolts? Since straps don't have threads I assume u-bolts. Get the ones from orielley's but not from the help section. Just give them the application of something that used u-bolts. If this is for the 60, ask for some for a 79 F-350 4x4 rear axle, then check that they are right. They're cheaper than in the help section, look much better, and have a lifetime warranty if you care on a $3 part.

ok, didn't want to confuse them with the ubolts on the axles... So yes the the ubolts that hold the caps on the yoke. Thanks kopecki.

If you are getting the 1350 yoke from Northwest fab like I recomended, they come with u-bolts instead of straps. For tapping the steering box, I wouldnt recoment doing it on the side like is "normal". Some people on CK5 had problems with their tires hitting the box and ripping the fittings off. You can tap the top plate of the box, and buy a new end cap with a tapped hole in it. This is the route I intend to go when I get to that point. Check out the vendor section on CK5, there is a guy who sells a kit with the cap and a prety *****in looking ram for a decent amount. I know you already have the PSC ram but he sells the caps and hoses seperate too.

for the ujoint without the zerk fitting, precision's heavy duty ujoints dont have the fitting on them, should be able to get them from anywhere, and precision also makes the ubolts and straps for the pinion

Thats what I thought. When landon used to work at O' Reilly's i'm pretty sure he got me them, however most of the part store monkey's that aren't familiar with 4x4's know **** about u-joints. At the Bryan O' Reilly's they had know clue what 1310, etc.. meant they just looked at me dumbfounded.

Hell the first guy that I asked for u-joints brought me out into the store and showed me u-bolts. I again asked for u-joints and obvsiouly had no clue and shoved me off onto the gothic looking 16 year old chick. She than shoved me off onto another person. I was there for a half hour until I just told them to try a 3/4 chevy. Then I called flem and he said to try a 1 ton chevy. I finally got what I needed. They also didn't know the difference between external and internal snap rings.

Nice... spendning more than I want too, but what the hell, we only live once right?

Just ordered, u-bolts, bumpstops, and a nice new shiney forged 1350 yoke.

u-bolts surprised me, after calling 4wheel parts and asking questions they told me to call superlift, which I did superly. They sound exactly like the ones BTF sells, but the pumpkin u-bolt is 10.5" long which I needed. They also come with studs like the BTF kit, but is only 37.xx compared to 59.xx. We'll find out when they come in on friday if all of this is true.

Doug Krebs
12-12-2006, 01:44 AM
God damn 4wheel parts, they sent me the wrong ****ing u-bolts. I even talked to the service people and actually called superlift who makes/supplies them. If they won't overnite what I need I'll have bvd make the damn things.

On a better note, summit actually sent the right bump stops. They also gave me a free hat and stickers!

Took the pump and steering box off tonight. The fluid had shiny sparkles in it :rainbow: I took the box apart to look at the internals and it was gunky as hell in there. I've decided against rebuilding the box and just buying a new one. It will be much better for time and my sanity.

Maybe tommorow night I pull an all nighter! I'd work later tonight if i had parts :(

Doug Krebs

so what did they send you?

4 u-bolts all of which are the same size. They all fit the non pumkin side, but those aren't the ones I need. I don't understand how they sent me the wrong crap. What we discussed on the phone was 2 like they sent me, 1 which has a larger diamter to fit around the pumpkin, and 2 studs that screw into the housing.

Instead I get 4 u-bolts. The one I really need is the larger diameter u-bolt that goes around the pumkin casting.

CRaSHnBuRN

damn, I was gonna order a set from them tommorow, and I think mine is the same part number as yours (9/16 studs, plus 3 u-bolts). Summit has them, and ship pretty damn fast (normally have the order the 2nd or 3rd day), but I hate to pay the 10 dollar packaging fee if thats all I need to order

So to get the blazer prepared for the reunion, I need to fix a couple of things. The two main things are the crossmember mounts and the rear drive shaft. Other things should include: notching the frame where a power steering hose hits and maybe try to figure out the weird power problem where half the vehicle loses power randomly.

So the crossmember is the biggest problem.

There are two mounts you can't see on the adapter in the picture. One of them is broken off and I don't think welding it back on is going to solve the problem for long.

My plan is to make two plates the bolt on the back side of the adapter where the blue scribble is. One on the top and one on the bottom. Then attach them ghetto like to some ghetto crossmember.

I use to have one of those sitting around Doug. The Klune negated the need for mine. I'll see if I can find it.

Something I would recommend is a mount coming off of the end of the NP205. There are two bolt holes on one end (I think towards the bottom on a non-clocked one). Build a small plate off of it and mount it to the frame or a cross member. I made one of these after shredding my motor mounts in reverse (engine turned, shifter pinned my leg, S-curved my old crossmember, bad deal). It's been on there for a few years now and no more torn motor mounts. It would also protect that adapter and anything else from the twist.

Problem is the tcase is a 208. These adapters are notorious for breaking. I'm not sure if the 208 and 205 adapter are the same. I know they look similar.

It's very apparent how much the t-case hangs down with the new crossmember. I actually scraped mud with it when I was in that pit. I wonder if it would fit between the frame rails if I clocked it. I'm not sure if the the front shaft could handle the angle though.

Edit: Disregard, that would be way too much trouble. If chevy would have made the bolt circle equally spaced it would be easy.

You have the later model round face adapter right? If such is the case, drill and re-tap the face of the case. I have the same version and from what I've found, thats the only way to do it. I've seen a few people cut, rotate and re-weld the adapter but that seems kinda janky. Great lakes offroad used to make a clocking ring for that specific 205 but I cant seem to find it on their site. I heard alot of reports of them being warped and leaking though, but you could just knock it flat with a mill easy enough.

I'll have to look at the face again, but I thought there were only certain places where it had flats. It also has to be tapped, not that it's hard to do.
