Ventilation is your friend, as anybody who's had a sore throat for a week after welding galvanized metal knows!

Wow. That's really sad. :( I never knew that zinc/galvanize and all that was so harmful. A reminder to know what type of metal you're dealing with and it's properties.

i learned the hard way not to weld galvanized steel wehn i was in middle school and didnt know any better, it was the cheapest pipe i could find and no one told me and my buddies it was bad for u to weld. I was in bed for a week and felt like i was going to die the entire time

I've built cattle pens out of guard rails. That's the heavy galvanize you have to really watch out for. Some metal buildings will have galvanized purlin, but its a lighter coat. Road signs are galvanized. And water well pipe. Just keep your head out of the fumes. And weld outside.

I've done it once and won't do it again. Only took a few minutes for the fumes to get to me.
Another good tip is to stop welding when you start feeling like a heater is pointed at your side, usually means your shirt is on fire...don't ask how I learned that one :D

who in the **** welds galvanized?
Anybody that doesn't grind the zinc off both sides of the base metal deserves a sore throat. For repeat offenders, cancer is the reward.
