If you were going to purchase a new set of tires and wheels, and the size tire you wanted had a 17 inch wheel option, would you switch to a 17 inch wheel (especially if the tire was in the 40 inch range)?

i would go 17, less sidewall deflection when aired down.

expensive? The tire for a 17 inch rim normally only runs a few dollars more than one for a 15 inch rim. But many of the new tires being released aren't even available for a 15 inch wheel. As for the wheel itself, you can get the 17x8 black steel wheels for under $55 bucks a piece. Doesn't seem to bad to me? Another thing to consider is in a few years it may become harder and harder to find good used tires in the 15 inch size, as people start using 17s more.

I do like the fact that 17s have less sidewall deflection and look pretty good with larger tires. I also figure if I ever upgrade axles, say to D60s, I won't have to worry about a 15 inch wheel not clearing the brakes. I also saw pics where a guy ran a 17 inch wheel with weld on beadlocks on both the outside and inside beads, and everything cleared fine. Granted that would be somewhat expensive, and heavy, it was cool non the less

Do it. Big wheels are better. That's why I run 16.5s. Much better than the 15s every other idiot has.

you bring up a good point. I've been wondering if there are any factory 17 inch wheels with a 6 lug pattern and a decent backspacing. If the backspacing was between 3-4 inches, that would be nice. Anyone know what the backspacing on a set of wheels like that is?

I think they're 4-5"s backspacing.
