I need to buy a couple things in preparation for Katemcy.
First is a new pinion yoke for the 44. I'd read in one of the mags about a company that makes some sorta super duper one, but I looked and can't remember where I found it.
Second, I'm looking for an onboard air setup. But I can't decide if I want to run a compressor like on ARB's mounted under the hood, or if I should just get one of the portable airtanks with a built in compressor?

Also does anyone know the measurement off hand for an 81 dodge d44 shortside shaft, from the end of the splines to center of the u-joint?

Plenty of companies have baller pinion yokes for Dana 44's. High angle driveline, northwest fab and tom woods driveshaft are just a few I can think of right off hand.

Why not use a York for OBA?

And I have the york brackets, and an extra york that needs rebuilt. But you won't get them before katemcy.

If you want to set up an air system like in the big rigs, i can do. 15 weeks of that damn class payed off.

like i just told Robert sharpe, id have to do some more research and see what systems and compressors i can adapt over and use. I might do a tech write up or somthing.

I've actually thought about trying to use a 2 cylinder compressor I found on a bus at my friends junkyard in Kingsville but its prety large and the pulley is huge.

its a start

Why not just use the york or sanden that was probably an option on whatever motor you have and for which you can find brackets in the junkyard (or even toyota if that's what you have)?

If you can find factory brackets to mount a york on a 6.2 you will be a better parts whore than me. There is a slim chance GM put a york on a 6.2 in some kind of box truck or delivery van at some point in time. I have no idea if this is true or not, but they did put yorks on 350s in delivery vans, and they did use 6.2s in some, so its a natural progrogression.

uglyota

so a/c was never an option on vehicles with a 6.2?

Sharpe

Yah it was pecker head but they used sanden compressors with circulating oil systems.

uglyota

so use a sanden...I swear I've seen writeups where people put inline oilers on them

Sharpe

Yes it can be done but its a PITA and I'm really not that ambitious.

so you'd rather bootyfab a bracket to mount a 100 pound bus compressor that is probably siezed up?

I looked at the Powertank systems and they're pretty costly, around 5 bills. I think I might see if I can get a compressor from a couple friends back home who run bagged truck's. Your thoughts?

the compressors they use on bagged trucks generally suck from what ive seen. they are slow and not very powerful. If you are going to have onboard air, be able to run air tools. basically go york. Just go to a junkyard and you can pick one up for around $20 and the brackets should be easy to come by as well.

They make the air compressors that bolt onto a bracket that mount onto 6.2s. Ive seen them. they plumb into the oil system of the truck, use an air compressor govenor, air dryer, and a primary tank. All parts prob could be bought in a truck junk yard for prob less than 175 at the most and the pressures are allowed up 2 125 i think. it is clean dry air that can be used for anything. Plus you get the cool semi air purge sound.

the clean air intake comes off of the air cleaner on the engine.its not rocket science.

St. John is running twin sandens on his 4.0 with an idler between them.

I have a perfectly good york 210 but I cant figure out how to mount the compressor. Building a static bracket wouldnt be a problem but figuring out how to tension the belt is what I am having trouble with. The bracket I made works ok for tensioning but it doesnt have any 3 dimensional support for the compressor.

I built a bracket for my york a couple years ago. Not sure how your belts are in comparrison, but you can come look at it if you would like too.

Sharpe
01-24-2006, 07:28 PM
Is your serpentine or v-belt? How did you tension it?

eight
01-24-2006, 11:05 PM
I once had a truck with a york that was spring tensioned so you could easily remove the belt. I probably still have that bracket stuff around somewhere, but it was on an old 7.3.

Well if you find it let me know, I'm interested.

Not sure if its even a possibility, but since I'm assuming youre trying to use the York on your main belt, what about running the York off of its own belt, using a dual pulley like the ones from Kilby? Its how I hooked up mine..

My 6.2 has v-belts.
