View Full Version : Popcorn?

For lack of a better description, my exhaust sounds like popcorn popping when I am cruising and have the gas under a slight load. This means I'm detonating, right? If I let all the way off the gas or give it more gas it gets better, but if say I get on 6 and get up to speed, then let off the gas to where I can maintain speed it pops and crackles like crazy. What could be causing this on a 97 350 vortec?

Its probably Orville Redenbacher

no check engine light, seems to be kind of stuttering when it's doing this, I think it's worse before the engine warms up but I'm not positive

perhaps a clogged or damaged catalytic converter?

Hippy if you want I can scan it this weekend for you. My truck has detonated a few times but that was only when I was bouncing it off the governor at 5k rpm. :gigem:

The timing being somehow funked up could cause the detonation right? From what I understand, the knock sensor tells the puter when to retard timing to prevent detonation right? Maybe the sensor is bad?

hell, my brother in missouri has a 96 vortec 1/2 ton pickup...220k+ and we just got done doing a major service on it. It's on it's 2nd tranny and I think the 3rd rear end, but the motor is still strong as hell.

Back home our mailman drives a truck kinda like the bigger uhauls full of mail a few hundred miles each day. His vortec lasted to a little over 300k pulling a heavy load day in and day out.

Jesus drove his vortec 1,002,002 miles and he didn't even pray for it! I **** you not, he told me the other day. Also, he bought a raptor 700R4 for it too and is still on his first tranny.

That is an LS series motor, so although Jesus does in fact drive a Chevy, he prefers the older Vortec motors, because only he can keep the manifold from leaking....

Hey, I gave you four examples, what more do you want. I'm sure if I posted, Nick is gay and I have 14 examples of this including medical photos of Frick's bleeding ass post-gaysex; somebody would step up with examples of how straight nick is and how he is such a man's man......OK maybe not, bad example, forget I said that, but you get my point!

Speaking of maintenance (which I've been keeping up with religiously on my new truck :flipoff2: :gigem:), i've had a leaky power steering hose for the past 3 months, I've called 3-4 times, but all the dealer in houston and 3 in NJ have said they are backordered nationwide....wtf? What if your line was busted in two, are you just supposed to not drive your truck for 3 months? Its bullsheet I tell you, why'd I buy a dodge anyway :D :flipoff2:

that is not good news. Especially considering the porcupine on my drain plug that's been growing with each oil change. Getting the pan off with the IFS in the way is such a royal PITA that if I change a rod bearing I'm rebuilding the short block. And I don't have time or resources for that for a few months, so I guess I'll take you up on the scan and just baby it until I can rebuild.

Mike I figured it was you.

on further thought, this is probably more likely than a rod knock. It sounds more like stuttering and backfiring than it sounds like loose internals.
How big a deal is it to pull the distributor and check out or change that gear?

it sucks, the cam sensor (i think) is und the cap and the crank sensor is on the front of the motor.

Have you noticed a loss of power from this? My guess would be one of the converters.

uglyota
02-24-2006, 01:54 PM
I don't think so...
the weird thing is that it's only when I let off the gas or am using like 1/4 throttle. It actually feels like too little backpressure...or like when I'm engine braking down a steep incline (in the yota)...like the computer's not sure how much fuel to put and when to fire

see what happens if you're coming upto a stop light and down shift to second then to first while braking (ie manually downshift) if it does it real bad then and sounds like a Porterite with glasspacks, then i'd say cat or maybe even muffler though I think yours is pretty new. If you're not really losing power then I'd doubt its one of those sensors.

uglyota
02-24-2006, 02:18 PM
I'll try that, but I suspect what you described will happen. I guess I need to crawl under it and look for leaks as well...I'll feel pretty stupid if there's a gaping hole in one of my cats.
and yeah the muffler's only about a year old Flowmaster. I wish it would blow out, it's too loud and I don't think it provides enough backpressure

It wouldnt' be a hole in the cat. The insides are ceramic. They can break and rattle around and clog flow.
