Muscle car fans, a classic ride silenced since 1974 will roar back to life this weekend.

Chrysler Group is preparing to announce before the Pepsi 400 NASCAR race in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday that it will build the Dodge Challenger, bringing to market as soon as next year a sports coupe to compete against the Ford Mustang.

Chrysler officials haven't announced details, but people familiar with the plans confirmed that the two-door, four-seat concept Challenger unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show will go into production. Chrysler built the Challenger for only a few years, 1970-74, but the car made a lasting impression.

The concept version's styling borrowed heavily from the classic 1970 Challenger muscle car, with twin hood scoops and a pistol-grip shifter. The concept is powered by a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 producing 425 horsepower through a six-speed manual transmission.

"Every NASCAR fan in the country will be drooling over that car," said Erich Merkle, an auto analyst with IRN Inc. in Grand Rapids.

I dig it. Dodge is on top of the game as far as cars are concerned these days. I'm tryin to talk my mom into getting a Chrysler 300M but she aint goin for it yet.

Man that looks kickass. I like how the big three are starting to go somewhat retro with their new muscle/sport cars.

well I'll be darned...

Her first car was a yellow and black 1971 Plymouth Road Runner. Although the car was intended to be a Plymouth Roadrunner, some early episodes used a 1974 Dodge Charger with a matching "Roadrunner stripe" painted behind the rear window. After losing that car over the side of a cliff (depicted in the second season episode "The Runaway"), she received her trademark white 1980 Jeep CJ-7 "Golden Eagle" with a Golden Eagle emblem on the hood, which she named "The Dixie".

Looks a lot better than the new camaro.

The new Camaro SS did the Nurburgring in 8:20.

To compare...a Cobalt SS did it in 8:22.

Not a bad time, I wonder what the Challenger will make it around in? Hopefully less, as its a far better looking car.

Where did you get the 'ring time for the SS? Just curious, the cobalt ss is dumb fast for a 4 cyl, 260HP and 3000 lbs, I think a pulley change nets 295 hp. I'd get one for my wife, if I had one.

Holy crap, look at some of those cars the camaro beat!? I knew the cobalt was quick, didn't know it was that fast. Faster than a Cayman...yikes. Click on some of those cars after the ZR1, it really brings home how fast that f'ing car is.

it runs through the slalom faster than a corvette z51, pulls the same g on the skidpad, and stops from 60 in the same distance. runs a 14 flat in the quarter to boot. i would drive one with dark tinted windows.

this must be an entirely different animal from the pile of a Cobalt SS I rented a year ago.
